The future was on the court at the end of the game...

Fran has some pieces to have a better defensive team, will it translate into that??? I just get tired of run out dunks and layups after missed shots and always behind the 8 ball athletically. I will always watch and love the Hawks but come I'm 54 and need a sweet sixteen lol

So let’s get over the repetitive negative posting from the Arkansas guy. Iowa will be in a Sweet 16 with the core of players eventually. PMac, Nunge, Keegan, Kris, Josh, Ulis, Joe T, Tony Perkins, CJF, and Sandfort will get us there.

Well, now you're being reductive and condescending. :) LOVE YOU!

Great. This is all EXACTLY what I was trying to discuss in starting this thread. :( /smh

I am with you on this and have said that I am more excited for next year than this year. I think we all knew what we were going to get with this squad due to being immobile laterally.

That said, I still was expecting them to get to the dang sweet 16. It still sucks to fall short.

Next year is really intriguing for me because it will all be new. We certainly don't have the shooters that we do this year in Weez, Garza and most the time Bohannon but we have what we asked for... more athletic guards who can drive and defend. I hope to see the ball move a little more and consistently hold teams under 70. I'm looking forward to seeing this squad compete.

Fran has had 10 years to try things his way and it hasn't worked. Do fans really think he is going to make the Sweet 16 in the next 10? I would love to hear your logic if you do. It starts with the lack of athleticism. There is no prayer for better Iowa defense with the level of athletes Fran has recruited. Offense doesn't matter. The Washington Generals scored a lot of points but always lost. Play a freaking style that fits the players you are capable of recruiting. Go to the portal and get some more athletic players here Fran or make room for more NIT participation banners.

Here's my answer, you're giving me 10 years - why not?

In case you haven’t noticed, the next few Iowa teams are going to likely be Frans most athletic ones yet.!

I really like how this team looks next year if they grab a quality big that is a shot blocker from the portal.
a Liam Robbins type.

Next years roster will be the most athletic Iowa team since the 80s.

Should be an excellent defensive and transition team.

Shooting could be the major weakness.

Next years team is one I could see playing the press well. If you’re starting Joe T and CJF at the guards, that’s 2 decent to good defenders. Have Keegan and Pat at the forwards with the length they have will cause so many problems coming up the court. Then you just let Jack Nunge sit back in the paint and block shots, and that’s a recipe for defensive success. I also think this will be a lineup that can execute man defense to perfection.

Yes, and it’s because the level of athletes that he is has recently brought in is drastically higher than it was. The Murray’s, Pat, and Perkins are all springy, explosive athletes (and at least Pat and the Murray’s appear to be quite skilled as well). Toussaint has the quickness and athleticism to be that two way PG we’ve been looking for, but still needs to dial down on mistakes and dial up some scoring ability. Ulis appears to fit the mold as well, and his brother was an NBA player, which bodes well and means that he at least knows what it takes. All of them have the lateral quickness to play good defense, which is more players than we can say did for most of Fran’s past teams

If JW doesn't come back you are talking about Iowa losing probably 90% of their offense. Assuming Nunge is back at 100% and the Murray twins add some bulk + Josh O. losing some, I think Iowa will be "Ok" down low. I am more concerned about guard play. Connor is what he is which is 0 offense and marginal D. CJ is a baller but has nagging injury issues. Joe T. is the "Yeah Joe T." , "No Joe T." player we have seen for two years and while Ulis and Perkins show promise, neither appears to be perimeter-oriented.

All Fran has coming in is the Sandfort kid from Waukee which will be another spot up shooter non-shot creator Fran recruit. Fran needs to get the two best scorers he can in the portal or it will be a really rough year IMO.

They will do it. Unlike past teams, the future has athletes a at ever position. Joe T is one of the fastest players in the country, has developed into a good passer, and is a very good defender. We already know what a healthy CJF brings. Tony Perkins is already a great defender, and will be an elite lockdown perimeter defender by the end of his career. He also is an insanely good athlete. Ulis is a silky smooth PG, that has very good b-ball IQ he just needs to polish up his game. The future Guards will likely be Dasonte Bowen and one of either Jaden Schutt or Eli King. That is an extremely versatile PG with Bowen, the best shooter I’ve ever seen at a high school level in Schutt, and an extremely uptempo, athletic guard with Eli King. If that’s the future, count me in!

If Iowa can get 2 of Bowen, Schutt and King this would be Fran's biggest haul by far in recruiting guards. I will be pleasantly surprised if this happens. He would finally be building the backcourt he needs to run his offense after all these years when you combine them with Ulis, Perkins and a SR Toussaint and SR Fredrick. That season would be fun to watch.

That’s the team that would make the Sweet 16. They would also have Jack Nunge, Ogundele, Sandfort, both Murray’s, and Mulvey.

Fair points and I am not arguing to argue here but where do the points come from? Maybe to your post Iowa doesn't need to score as many points because their defense will be better than awful for the first under Fran. Just hard for me to see this team scoring effectively without Garza, Jbo and according to some JW. I mean we can't always count on Connor going off for 4 points right?

Im actually pretty excited about next years team.

Id be allot more excited if Fran brought in a D coordinator but most of the guys are already motivated and intelligent defenders so they won't need that much coaching.

If you put JT, Ulis, Perkins and 2 Murrays on the floor at once thats the type of team that can switch every screen which is the way to stop a team like Oregon.

Sadly Fran had those players at his disposal this year and choose to ignore them.

It's why they need to be in Wezzy's ear! Tell him that he has unfinished business. Pro money will be there

Hopefully now we can start getting more buckets in transition and at the rim. We can still have Sandfort shooting upper 30% but if guys like Ulis and Perkins can shoot around 35% from deep, and the Murray’s shoot 37% or so, we don’t need to be lighting it up from 3 like the past few teams have. Plus we should have the defensive ability to win more low scoring games

This isn’t even just next year. I expect the Hawks to take a step back next year and be a bubble team, but I do like the outlook over the next few

It sucks, but we knew that this team was going to live and die with its vets and the shooters. I do wish that we’d gotten some of the younger guys more looks earlier in the year, but at least Perkins and Ulis got some valuable run in the BTT and Dance

Uh, if you live in Tennessee that might be legal, but not in Iowa big fella... ;)

I was thinking that too... Tony P has some serious hops (like KM)- he just needs to control/time it better.;) I really liked PattyMac's game today as well - he knew his limitations and played smart...

So he’s not a good recruiter or top recruits don’t want to play for him. Thats reassuring, and it’s supposed to suddenly get better?
It has gotten better. Pretty sure that most/all the guys in the 2020 and 2021 class were priority recruits

I think we are all thrilled to have some athletes on the floor to watch, but reality is we don’t a group like Purdue’s freshman or Michigan’s incoming class.

We saw a ton of freshman mistakes on defense when the kids were in against Oregon. Even Keegan is trying to block everything and we give up a bunch of offense rebounds because of it. I can’t figure out where enough points come from to win games.

I think we are looking at a number of highlight reels plays but too many instances of defensive break downs and scoring droughts to be a serious threat in B1G play.

I’ll still follow the Hawks passionately as I have for 71 years, but realistic expectations call for a mediocre season at best without some high impact transfers.

I believe that JT will be a pleasant surprise to many of the Negative Nelly's that populate this place after a defeat. I believe that once he understands the "job is his" he will grow exponentially. I believe he is a real talent....raw and a bit rough but really talented.

I wish I really believed that. Ulis and Bowen (hopefully) are the future of that position.

You’re going to be wrong. This team is pissed off going into this off-season. If you think they aren’t going to let this loss boil, you’re wrong. They’re going to be hungry next year.

Oooh. I’d never thought of that. I bet they’ll be the only ones in the league with that edge.

Big Ten Title here we come!!!!

We lose the 2-time B10 POY, whose backup could well call it a career as well, the starting point guard who will be replaced by a person 70% of the board wanted benched 3/4 of the way through the year, and possibly Weisy. Yet we will miraculously advance farther in the tournament? Color me skeptical, especially with this coaching staff.

Optimism vs. Realism.

I'm a realist. It will not happen. Luka was a goddamn SuperStar surrounded by sharpshooters with a million games of experience. Round of 32 loss.

Fran can not get us there.
This is true. The stars aligned for Fran this year and he shit the bed. Decent diamond in the rough recruiter and the players seem to like him but he's flat out outclassed in big time ncaa basketball and we are reminded of that every march. The Garzas revitalized his meh career
