Trump is at Liberty University today talking about how he wants to build our own Great Wall like they did in China. It might be interesting to note that the Great Wall of China bankrupt the nation, killed thousands and failed to keep out the Mongols. History has a lesson for Trump.

What's the big deal? I don't see people screaming because the Mexicans built a wall to keep the Guatemalans out on their southern border.

If they can have a border wall, so can we.

To be fair, bankruptcy has never bothered trump.

First of all it's down right mean and xenophobic to have a border and a sovereign nation. Thanks to all that lead based paint way back when, we now have a generation (or two) that believes the only cultures that have the right to exist are those cute backward cultures depicted in National Geographic.

We need a wall, a fence, beefed up border patrol, and employee e-verify. Then we need to deal with the immigration mess. If in the process China happens to go bankrupt again and a few Mongols make it in - so be it.

As long as we force them to pay for it, that is the key...

Good grief IMCC, nobody is questioning whether it is technologically/engineeringly possible to build a wall.

So you do disagree with Trump then? Him wanting to kick every illegal out?

We also need to build the wall DOWN some as well if practical. They do like to dig tunnels too.
And along all coastlines.

Best bet is to build a dome over all of America.

I wonder how much that would cost.

Just think about all the jobs that would create.

Or . . . we could return to sanity.

How about a canal? We already have the Rio Grande. Dredge it, extend it, turn it into a moat.

Build monitored crossing bridges for people and wildlife.

Walls/fences don't do much for trade. A waterway for shipping could cause an economic boom in that region that would more than pay for the construction and would make sneaking across much harder.

Yes, but now it is a great tourist destination, so there's that! :D Perhaps he is just looking down the road a ways and can see the future better than all of the rest. :D:rolleyes:

I know Trump hasn't and won't, but has any group given a legitimate cost analysis for such a wall?

Are we talking Trillions?

Yes a little wall on the border is going to bankrupt this country.

Do people understand that virtually all illegal immigrants in this country are identity thieves?

Bill Maher's solution: Build a giant Walmart the length of the border and control immigration by how many checkout counters are open.

That would certainly cut it down.

But Wally was a significant theft problem and has almost no way of detecting/stopping those who take advantage of it.

So not unlike our current strategy.

Why do you say that?

First, why is it a little wall? Wouldn't it be a historical scale?

Second, what identities?

A giant wall will not keep illegals out, is not cost effective, and Mexico will not pay for it. Great plan otherwise. Like I keep saying, if you want to stem the flow of illegal aliens lock up the people that employ them. From the guy that hires six illegals to put a roof on a house to the CEO's of the biggest companies.
S*** will get fixed fast.

Second, what identities?

This is the only reason the government created E-Verify... to spot fake documentation used to show identity and eligibility to work in the United States.

A document presented by an applicant is checked against a giant government database of legitimate documents. If there's something wrong, the applicant is given the opportunity to go down to the immigration office and clear the matter up.

Even better, pursue fair trade policies that force other nations to provide better wages, benefits, education, environmental protection, and democracy. Level the playing field UP instead of fostering a race to the bottom and watch the desire to flee here dwindle.

Regime building again? That trick never works.

So to clarify:

Illegals are stealing identities in order to work, right? Using SSNs for tax purposes?

How come nobody is worried about the estimated 50,000 illegal Irish in America?

I think that's the cost of Trump's total immigration solution. But that was before he promised to make it beautiful. The man puts gold leaf on everything. Honestly, his wife has to be a beard right? Look at this, he has to be related to Liberace.

Fabulous.

Not all illegals. Most probably just work under the table. But if they want to get a legitimate job, they're going to need a Social Security card, which is probably the easiest government-issued document in the world to fake.

Romney had it right. Punish the employers and allow self deportation to work its magic. Cheap and easy, just like my favorite people.

It would also be wise to realise this isn't actually a very big problem. Very few lives will be made better by solving it so our response should be in line.
Everybody seems to be on board with the idea of punishing the employer. Why?

I'm an employer and I have an opening. Someone applies who is willing and able to do the job. We agree to a legal wage. He does the work, as agreed. I pay him, as agreed. I fully report everything I am supposed to report, and pay the taxes I am supposed to pay.

Why am I the bad guy if my worker turns out to be illegal?

If there were no work for them, supposedly they would go back home.

I'd give you 100 likes right now if Rivals would let me.

Employers are painters, or mechanics, or building contractors, or engineers, or finance guys, or software designers, etc., etc. They are experts on the industry in which they operate. Unless the employer is an employment law firm or an HR consultant's shop, none are government-issued documentation specialists.

This scenario is logically impossible. An illegal isn't legally able to work and you can't legally pay him a wage. Add to that if we went with a plan that required everify you would not be legally reporting everything. Both of you have broken the law. We go after you for the same reason we go after a John.
