Yuck, so many damn overthrown balls and drops to be fair to Stanley .. and Barkley was a madman that day and of course a Heisman Trophy Winner and well deserved..

I think we get them this year I really do.. taking away Barkley is like taking away a normal running backs leg off and expecting him to rush for 200 yards a game

Barkley was the real deal that day. He broke so many tackles and made our guys look so slow. Bless him, I know he was trying and giving all he had but I was so upset with Bo Bower that game. He had very little hope to contain Barkley.

A lot of linebackers had problems with barkley. He was big and fast. The drops that day just drove me crazy. Hopefully that gets better this year.

Just change the channel after Wadley scores and it'll be like we won that game! :)

Because f*** Penn State and Trace McSorley for not throwing more incomplete passes on critical downs on that last drive. That's why.

Yeah uh.....Baker Mayfield won the heisman

Great game.
That's definitely top 5 for best games in the Ferentz era Iowa ended up losing. Maybe even the best given that it came down to the final play.

This is just a quick list off the top of my head.

1. 2018 Penn State
2. 2009 Ohio State
3. 2015 Michigan State BTCG
4. 2010 Wisconsin
5. 2013 Ohio State

Not a nightmare for me. Hell, I was over it when the kickoff occurred next game.

Losses happen. Kick in the nuts losses happen. That's why they keep playing more games, and "next season".

I'm not going to quibble with any of those 5. I'm not saying any of these deserve a spot over any of the above either, but:

2001 Michigan (Marquis Walker catch game, Brad Banks vs Kyle McCann BOOOOOO!)
2005 Michigan (Witvoet game, broke the streak of home wins)
2002 Iowa State (incomprehensible series of 2nd H mistakes, Seneca capitalized)

Then there were the 2008 losses that were all by thin margins IIRC - Illinois (lost on FG), MSU (FB went wrong way on 4th), Pitt (Stanzi didn't play 2nd H), Northwestern (Hawks 0 pts 2nd H)

Great game.

Good list. I would add:
2001 Michigan

Not to derail this into an ISU pissing match but my Cyclone buddy came with me that day and said he’s never experienced an atmosphere like that one (up until the final play that is).

You know something I actually did but waited until psu got to the 45 yard line and then said “we did it”

The Hawks D was seemingly playing to limit McSorley and do their best to contain Barkley. We were still more than a little soft in the middle ... and we also were more than a bit inexperienced in the secondary. Thus, Phil seemed to scheme things to play really soft D ... and clamp down on preventing big plays ... and limit PSU scoring.

Oddly enough - the plan worked really well ... and it almost worked. If our O had been a little less green itself ... we may have been able to score enough points to reward the D for their herculean effort.

The good news is that I think that the Hawk DL will be less soft in the middle. It will still be a head-ache to contain McSorley ... but the weapons surrounding him ought to be far less experienced than they were last year.

The end result, is that I expect the Iowa D will be able to help give our O more opportunities to score.

The question will be this ... in such a hostile environment ... will our O be able to score enough to win? Also, the PSU DL will arguably be the best DL the Hawks face all year ... so our guys will have their hands full up front.

Really interesting match-ups ...

One more thing ... I completely expected that the Hawks would get rolled in that one. I honestly believe that the '17 PSU game was one of the best football games I've ever seen ... just the wrong team won. Don't get me wrong ... it was a heart-breaking loss ... but given that I would have sworn that we'd get blown out before the game ... the outcome was more than a little surprising.

The fact that PSU more than doubled Iowa`s offensive output, makes it nearly a miracle being pulled off if the hawks would have stopped them on the last play.

read ghost’s previous post about the gp. Yards were meaningless. Brilliant gp by Parker

Phil Parker channeled his inner Norm Parker in that one.

One of my favorite game statistics ....

2003 Iowa vs ISU game:
Iowa: 243 total yards
ISU: 390 total yards

Final score: 40-21 Iowa

I forget the stat line, but I remember the 2008 PSU game where Iowa only ran 8/9 plays in the entire half (touchdown on short field and some 3 and outs). We stayed in the game because Penn State couldn’t get in the end zone until late and led 13-7 at the half. God I loved ruining paterno’s season that day.

Stat line was fairly comparable in that game. They owned the first half ... we owned the second half.

Iowa: 272 total yards
PSU: 289 total yards

What was particularly impressive was that PSU's O was vaunted that year ... featuring the "spread HD" offense ... with Heisman hopeful, Daryll Clark at the helm. Boy did he have troubles when playing the Hawks ... he had a crappy game against us in '09 too!

Another fun stat line ... the '10 Michigan game:

Iowa: 383 total yards
Michigan: 522 total yards

Final score: 38-28 (the score was 28-7 entering the 4th quarter ... we let up a little too much in the 4th quarter)

I remember wishing he’d gone down at the 5, as we could have bled clock before kicking the field goal to win.

I said the same thing when we scored. I wonder what the actual odds are on that strategy? Of course, IIRC didn't we get a FG blocked earlier in the game?

So if he had gone at the five and the second FG was blocked, that would have been ... brutal.

Frankly, to me Bo Bower was hard to watch, seemed always a step slow or behind. He hit hard but just not quick enough. I guess that's all we had in the tank

It is hard to win the total yards battle when some of your possessions start in the other team’s end zone.
