Good in general or good specifically this year?Wisconsin defense is really good. Maybe not elite DL but I would put their defense up with ISU any day.
Fair enough, from what I remember the safety did kind of slow play it (they may have been in Robber coverage and the safety played it very well), but that is just going from memory. My memory seems to tell me the middle opened up very clearly, but if he had pressure in his face (again I am going from memory), then he had to make his decision quicker than he wanted to based off how the safety played it. I'll trust your tape watching skills as you seem pretty competent. Thanks for your time and effort in this, it's a fun read! Pun intended?Great observation. I went back and re-watched that play and I kind of have to disagree with you, even though it looks like in the end the misread. Petras is definitely staring at the safety who pretty much just stayed still, not biting on the PA nor the post route. When Petras makes his decision, Tracy is 5 yds behind the safety and the safety is still looking at Petras. But then as soon as Petras winds up, the safety turns around and runs, all while the other safety kind of re-routes Tracy. Petras could have thrown it to Jones, maybe, but he had a linebacker running with him, and it was across the middle in traffic. I think it was just a hell of a play by the safeties to not bite on the PA and run down the play. I think though had Jones taken a little deeper path and Petras had a little more time to throw, it may have gone for a touchdown, but its a tough throw. And btw, Ince is who totally whiffed on the block as to why Petras and pressure in his face.
The Maryland game will be our next test for the defense.I don't disagree with that. Throwing the ball away is obviously preferable to taking a sack, but taking a sack while maintaining possession is infinitely preferable to a turnover.
Still, the OL has work to do. The coaching staff saw everything we did in the game, and noticed things that we didn't notice. They'll have plenty to work on in all three phases of the game over the next 3 weeks. I suspect we'll move the ball a little better with each successive week until a potentially huge showdown with Penn State - this will have the feel of a de facto B1G championship game.
Given that Kent State does a lot of RPO ... has a mobile QB ... etc ... I'd infer that they're pretty decent prep for Minnesota too.The Maryland game will be our next test for the defense.
Well......Kent State will be a good warm up for them.
I think they are the perfect team to play, and when we play them, because they look to me as a perfect tune-up to Maryland and Penn State, just with less talent. What I will be interesting to see against Kent State is how our defense handles their slot receivers and what we see with the Benson/Belton/Jacobs rotation, and of course how well our offensive line can pass off the tackles and get to the linebackers. As much as I like Benson against the run game, I think having Jacobs and Belton on the field at the same time, especially on third down can really be effective against the slot and the TE. And one other thing, is what our receiver situation is going to look like. I don't think it is going to be any secret that we are going to want to run the ball, a lot, and I think it will be very evident in this game which receivers are wanting to do the work to block. We will win handily win in the end but Kent State is better than the usual MAC team I think. They're good.
