The sky is falling

Can someone who was there speak on this: did the passing game struggle more due to poor throws/reads by the QBs or because the D had a read on what they were doing?

Execution based mistakes can be fixed. If it’s scheme-related that’s a bit more concerning.
If you were a locked in starter on defense in such a practice would you not take greater risk? I mean what the heck do you have to lose and you have seen the stuff to some degree in prior get togethers. Really think Phil would bench a locked in starter for making a break on something they may normally be taught to sit back on?

I was not there, but I heard some of Cade's throws were way off and reminded them of how Hill could not hit a wide open target. I mean one could understand being rusty and not threading a needle, but to be off by 5ft is really really rusty. As KF always says, you have to be able to make the makeable plays.
Were they open?

Depends - it’s not really that Phil coaches the D to not take risks, rather that they are taught to play their position and then pounce when opponents make a mistake. On occasion he’s had guys that freelanced - Nixon being a prime example of that, but overall players have bought into that system. The results clearly speak for themselves.

Rarely do you see someone start for Phil that doesn’t play within that system.

once again, the D is carrying the team. apparently. what's new? we got time.... wait till the first ball is snapped....

Well the word sailed has been used. That means over the head and is more likely to be picked off then a ball that was placed 2-3 ft in front of or behind. A little to soon or to late is a timing thing and much easier to correct with reps then a sailing issue. There is speculation that Cade is having issues trusting his leg and that is affecting his throws and causing them to sail. ( I do not have any personal knowledge about any of that, but it has been speculated)

Anyone who has experienced a major knee injury is skeptical of Cade. Penix is an exception not the rule.

Some of us took note when NW fans were giggling about the next guy in.

At least one of Cade's pass looked like Hill last year. Maybe a 15 yd out that hit the dirt 5 feet short of the receiver.
That is what I am gathering too, it's not timing when it is high or low, timing is when it is in front of or behind. The being off high and low is what is causing people to think it is a issue, (be it real or in his head), with his leg when he sets to throw. Kf is right, no matter who the starter is at QB, we need tons and tons of reps in the next month to get it tightened up.

LOSING games BECAUSE of the offense matters
Sure it does. But overall, Iowa is a very successful program that is built around their defense and special teams.

I'm sure if they had unlimited resources they would be built more around all three phases, but they don't.

Thus when the program experiences some struggles from time to time it will show up in their offense. Even so, Iowa has been able to navigate the struggles and stay very successful.

They are what they are, which is incredibly consistent with success.

Regardless, what I was referring to in my post was fans that make a big deal about lack of offense in games that Iowa has won

It’s kids day one practice and seems everyone is predicting gloom and doom… this was a practice … doesn’t mean sh!t… Hawks will be stellar this season ….

We will be alright. 99.9% chance we are better then last year on day one of the season. We just need the wr's and qb's to absorb and get things locked down between now and the end of September. I mean yeah we have games to win before then, but we can get better and better as the season goes. A month ago everyone thought the OSU game would tell us all we needed to know and now maybe the Minnesota game will. They should start looking like a well oiled machine and begin to be able to pour it on by the Gopher game. If not......... it could be a long year yet again. ( not saying they want to give OSU any more tape then they have to, just saying that what they do do, should be being done with conviction and more precision.

Remember, if our D can do what it did last year (plus maybe a few more ints) ALL we wanted last year was to be able to move the dam ball. Nobody was asking for blow out games, we were asking to not get blown out. Now had we been able to move the ball a little 2 things happen. 1 the chance of busting a big play increase 1000 fold, 2 it keeps the ball in our hands and thus a blow out is less likely. Pretty much everyone has agreed, we look like we might be able to run the ball better then in the past and as Lester says......that is where it starts. So let's just wait and see. We have a pretty stout defense, I mean all our backers are on award watch lists. So running against them is going to be tough sledding for even the very best teams in the nation.

Yet fans somehow can't wrap their head around the fact that it's wins rather than offensive production that matters
EXACTLY. We survived the worst QB in college football last season, any QB we have now is an upgrade. We'll be fine. 10 wins or more.

Every ACL injury is different. I know personally that trusting the knee never returns for some folks. Everyone I know says their knee never feels the same stability after repair and rehab of the ACL repair.
