Josh Oglesby or Brady Ellingson.

Not just an actual great shooter but a good ball handler, versatile scorer, smart passer and vastly superior to Brady as a defender. People have kind of forgotten but Ogles was a pretty good defender before he graduated. Much quicker than either of the guys to whom CJ was most often compared.

Just 11 games into his career and already been over 20 twice, 8 double figure games and shooting 50%+ from 3. A little nervous at the line but he'll get over that I predict, just too good of a shooter to a poor free throw shooter.

This one is a keeper.

A stranger to Iowa Basketball might randomly watch this team for the first time and understandably think CJ is Iowa’s best player.

JW and Garza got things to say about that.

But that’s how good CJ is. He legit looks like the best player on the court... a lot.

FYI Moss played 15 minutes in a two point loss yesterday with no points,0-5, and had 2 turnovers. It was another of those Moss games when you wonder how that happens. I wish IM a good season, but KS. not so much.

I’m a fan of CJF not a Moss hater, and I’m really glad we’ve got CJ. His consistency has been amazing for a freshman. He’s definitely dependable and should be in every Hawk fans circle of trust.

I checked the Cincy boards last night just to see their perspective. They are understandably a bit grumpy they didn’t recruit CJF. Some folks saw him in HS and said he was way under recruited and under ranked due to the talent level of his team.

Even if they offered, does CJF go to Cincinnati. He walked on at Iowa initially because he wanted to play for Fran.

Love the kid. Really pleased with his progress. He and Luka bring contagious energy that the others can feed off.

Yeah, it’s not like CJ didn’t have good options. I think he still ends up with his 4-for-5 at iowa. Honestly most of the situations the kid ends up on scholarship anyways.

Thank God He wanted to play for Fran! He was the best player on the floor last night. Evelyn was huge since JT couldn’t figure how to walk and chew gum last night.
I think we all know why Moss left as a grad transfer and to the poster above that Moss would be taking his minutes if he stayed. Lol

His maturity is striking. He plays great defense for a freshman and doesn’t shy from taking a big shot. With Bohannon gone, he really stepped up when we needed him. Probably the benefit of having a Dad who played college ball. Playing him and Weiskamp together with Connor is really making us a tough match up. All good ball handlers who can shoot and defend.

when i saw this, i kind of scratched my head as he has a nice stroke and seems confident...but he is just above 70% (tad below Kreiner for context) at the line. I fully expect him to be more of a 75-80% guy in the long run.

IMHO it is clearly obvious to anyone with a brain and knowledge about basketball that the number 1 reason Moss left was because he knew that CJ would end up the starter and severely cut into his playing time.

CJ is a freshman and already looks like an All B1G freshman team player. He's not a role player on this team, he is the guy who the coach wants to have the ball in his hands at crunch time.

Agree, I wasn’t sure of the off-season word he was this good, but I’m a believer now.

We've got a three-headed monster and a facilitator with Garza in the middle, C.J. and Wieskamp drilling threes, and Connor getting them the ball. . We can win 20 games this season and get an NCAA bid, I hope, if these guys can stay healthy. The other four or five can chip in what they can, and every once in a while we need a kid to really step up like Evelyn did against Cincy. This is a very unselfish team and I really like them. Almost nobody thought we'd be 9-3 at this juncture.

Besides Bohannon and White biggest recruiting steal in FM era?

I’ll gladly eat crow on this because I thought he was going to be just like these 2. My thoughts were with him willing to walk on a year was a sign he wasn’t a high D1 player. I was totally wrong. I also know Fran can over hype his players as he had done with the two aforementioned players but unlike them C.J. has lived up to the hype. C.J. and Connor have by far impressed me the most this year based on expectation level I had before start of the year.

Lots of us rag on Moss including me, because he was so inconsistent but, yes I can see that if Moss truly wanted to make an impression on pro scouts, it wasn't going to be at Iowa, C.J. was going to take lots of his minutes.
Moss really did make a great choice in going to Kansas. For one, he's at a school that the students flock to games and really get behind the basketball program, secondly, he gets to play on a historic basketball court in "Phog" Allen Field House, and lastly, he gets to play for a hall of fame coach, whose record is undeniable, sort of. He's in a good place, doesn't need to be a complete player and plays in a conference that is not as difficult as the Big Ten and Kansas is always listed in the top of the polls because they attract blue chip recruits every year.
All that is great for Isaiah Moss, but I'm extremely happy that one C.J. Fredrick wanted to play for the Iowa Hawkeyes, he is quite a talent!

Fredrick and Wieskamp look like the same kind of player to me. The latter was ranked much higher than the former, but they are a lethal combo. We'll be in every game we play this year with those guys on the floor together with Garza in the middle.

I had no idea he was such a sniper. 7 games with 50% FG shooting or better, the only cupcake in their was Poly. For a freshman guard to have that kind of PER and consistency, he's a blossoming star. Teams are going to start game planning around him more now, and he could be forced to take some tougher late shot clock shots from 25 feet now without JB, but I think he can finish with similar numbers to what Joe had last year.

If Moss thought he needed to make an impression on scouts than he was making decisions with a total lack of awareness to the reality of his situation

If Moss was still on the team, he would be getting minutes, less than before but at who's expense?

I am not a pro scout, but I don't know who would be scouting Isaiah at this time. Kansas has completely removed him from their offense except for being an occasional, and I express, OCCASIONAL, spot up 3 point shooter. There are about 180 other players like him in college basketball right now.

Couple of thoughts.

Having seen the video from CJ's junior year you have to question how no one was on him. There are half a dozen schools in Kentucky and Ohio that should have been hot to trot on CJ. This grumbling at Cincy would be louder if they had the same coach that passed on CJ.

It would have been an unpleasant conversation if Isaiah really went to the coaches and requested guaranteed minutes. I'm not sure if that rumor is true. Obviously CJ was going to take a lot of minutes from Isaiah. CJ is already a much better all around player.

The major difference between CJ and Oglesby and Ellingson is that when those two had a game like last night, they were so rare, we always remember them a high points in their careers. I suspect with CJ, it will just blend in with a bunch of games just like it so we don't give it a second thought.

How quickly we forget the days of players dribbling around....afraid to shoot and then having to launch a prayer before the buzzer. I will take the up tempo we have now versus those days.

CJ has been on scholarship from day one on campus. He was a walk on at Iowa as Mr Kentucky Basketball in name only due to Christian Williams transferring out, freeing up a schollie for CJ. And rightfully so! Keep up the great work young man!!

No wonder Moss transferred out as I wish him the best but there is an upgrade at the two position with CJ playing.

CJF is a stud but this team would be even better had Moss stayed. Not saying one starts over the other, pretty obvious that they would both be starting right now with J Bo out.
