"Iowa needs more black players".

This is now three wins over the last 2 years over predominantly black teams (Southern last year, SIUe and Cincinnati this year) by predominantly white Iowa.

No, Iowa does not need more "black" players. Iowa needs more good players, regardless of race (this year, maybe not).

We beat Cincinnati last year as well. But yeah, color means nothing when it comes to W-L. Style of play might be another conversation, but I digress...

What is the context of this?

What is the context of this?

We see frequent posts on here, usually tied to losing, about "needing more black players", as though race indicates if a person is good at bball or not.

This is offensive stereotyping, and should not be said, as, with all stereotyping, it is simply inaccurate.

I figured that was it just making sure wasn't something actually written/stated somewhere by an actual source.

Most of us know that race in and of itself means nothing. Collectively though, years of watching NCAA men's basketball, our eyes tell us that something about the best NCAA men's basketball players. That's just a factual observation.

This topic, like most topics involving race, can't seem to be a factual one. It always has to be emotional or people think they have to tiptoe around things. Meh, the best players tend to be black. That said, Iowa has some damn fine white players this year. I'll take good players either way, but I think the best teams have some commonalities, and I also think it is fine to say it.

I wonder why you put black in quotes? As if they were not black enough? Your argument is racist, by the way.
I think white people are fine, I just want you to post this again in the NCAA Champs game when all 10 players on the floor are black,
or "black" as you would say.

There's a huge difference between recruiting black players (which Iowa obviously can do), and recruiting elite black players (which is much more difficult).

Case in point: South Dakota State has a blacker roster than Iowa does, but no Hawk fan in their right mind would want to swap rosters. The Jacks would be lucky to go 3-15 in the B1G.

You really don't understand stereotypes. At all. There is nothing wrong with stereotypes. They arise from reality, or they wouldn't exist in the first place. The problem with stereotypes is not their existence, rather it is their application to everybody in the stereotyped group by some people. Stereotype = not bad. Applying stereotype to everybody in said group = bad.
Your example here is the perfect case in point. Saying that black athletes tend to be better than white athletes is a stereotype, and one that is supported by reality and evidence. To apply that to everybody and say that every black person is a better athlete and every white person is a worse athlete, that is what is bad. The stereotype itself isn't, the application to everybody is.
I would argue very strongly that ignoring reality because the reality in question happens to touch on race or any other grouping is as bad as applying a stereotype to everybody. One intentionally ignores reality, while the other misapplies reality. Intentional is worse.

This has already been discussed ad nauseam. You're applying the same circular reasoning (Iowa winning basketball games) to make a point about others using the same circular reasoning.

Just stop.

Race-baiting is bad no matter who is doing it.
Skin color doesn’t matter... culture is important but is also overrated.

Do yourself a favor and just ignore every race bailing POS you can, and just try spread positivity and love to as many as you can. Don’t let activists and politicians make you a tribalist.

Let’s say we looked back over the last 20 years and broke down the racial makeup of all the Sweet 16 teams during that period (players who played at least 15 minutes/game) What do you suppose we would find?

maybe because they are "african american" not "black" to some people?

How was his comment racist? Just because your "assumption" of why he used quotes?

Your bold comment sounds more racist to me btw ;)

While the consistent call for more black players is dumb, this is an equally stupid and unnecessary thread IMO.

Yep. People were fixated on the color of skin and most didnt seem to care if the player was any good.....just wanted to have Iowa "look the part".

Recruit the top players that want to be in Iowa City.

Perhaps........both Virginia and Texas Tech started a white player in the National Championship game last year.

And of course we'll be in the national championship game this year so.....I don't know if I'd put money on that bet if I were you.

We lose that game without Bakari. Just say'n;)
Probably so. So how many games do we win without Garza, Weezy, CJF? How many games has JBO helped close out? Hopefully you get it by now right? IT has nothing to do with the color of their skin....

Oh I get it. I was poking fun at the OP i.e the wink.

True. But not all of us. We still see posts that we "need more black players". I had a thread with 10 such posts not long ago, but cannot find it now.

These people are my target.

No, my quotes were not to indicate our black players were not "black enough". It was to quote the many posts on here that say "we need more black players" as though blackness indicates being good at bball.

I suspect you think my argument is racist because you think I am indirectly saying "We need more white players". That is not what I am saying. What I am saying is that race does not indicate if someone is good at bball, being good at basketball indicates that. So, we need more good players, not more black players.

Wait. So race does NOT indicate quality of player?

Please clarify this. I do not understand how I am doing what you say I am doing.

Sorry, but I will choose, as a crew member here and not a passenger, to fight race baiting as well as to spread positivity.
