Thelwell & Traore updates

From the linked story:

In his second game since returning from an ankle injury, Drew Thelwell again did not look like himself. Thelwell started against Oregon and Washington but has held scoreless in both games.

McCaffery said Thelwell reaggravated the injury on Friday.

“He hurt it (Friday)," McCaffery said. "I wasn’t even going to play him. He said, ‘I’m ready to go.’ So I gave him a shot. He didn’t have it the other night. He didn’t have it today. I feel so bad for that kid. He wants it bad. He’s a phenomenal leader, a phenomenal person, awesome in the locker room and we need him. But others are stepping up thankfully.”

Saturday was the 6th consecutive game that Seydou Traore has started. But after being subbed out with roughly 3 minutes gone, Traore did not return for the remainder of the game. McCaffery confirmed after the game that Traore's limited playing time was a coach's decision, not due to injury

Traore missed a couple of shots but he played so little I don’t remember what else he did or didn’t do. Not great for his confidence.

In the previous game, on 2 consecutive possessions: (1) Traore threw up a wild shot that had no chance; (2) he threw a pass to Dembele, who was not looking for the ball. Robbie Hummel said that you have to throw to eyes (Ladji's eyes, to be more specific). Fran then subbed Traore out.

In today's game:

19:35 mark: Traore missed a jump shot

19:19: Traore had a block

18:53: Traore missed a 3 point shot

17:05: Carter Kingsbury subbed in for him

I don't remember anything else, either.

Wish the spineless Iowa media would’ve asked why Fran benched him the last 37 min. Let alone why he didn’t even start him 2nd half. Laughable in his presser how Fran mentioned kingsbury could match up well with their big guys strength. I’m not sure why or what Fran was trying to prove by playing our best athlete only 3 min and kingsbury 29 but it wasn’t in the team ‘s best interest during the game. And For what? 2 missed shots? honestly first one can’t blame any player for taking. Nothing like killing a players confidence Fran. Coaches with a short leash on players put the mindset on them where they are worried about making a mistake and ending up on the bench.

Nobody remebers anything else... he played 3 minutes.

There's a lot to complain about but this is one.

Brauns plays a great game last game; plays 10 minutes today.

Traore had a solid week two weeks ago; has had about no time since.

Pryce has been very impactful on both sides recently; had 8 points in 15 min... 14 min less than Pryce.

Kingsbury hasn't played all year; gets 29 minutes today.

The minutes are so oddly distributed... I get matchups and adjusting to other teams but if I were a player not named Payton Sandfort, Josh Dix and Brock Harding I would have no idea what my role is on this team. I would maybe throw in Thelwell when healthy.

Too bad we didn't win this game . Coach should have played Traore and also benched Mulvey just to make you happy.

Gonna miss Traore's athleticism and defensive efforts next season ........ if Fran stays.

And even if he leaves, maybe.

Solid thought process on display with this post. Not much of surprise that Fran has been the coach for 15 years now

The Iowa media is definitely afraid of Kirk and Fran. That’s why they get treated with kid’s gloves. The hard questions aren’t asked, let alone answered. Tom Brands will give you the hard answers even if the questions aren’t asked.

It’s called looking at the bigger picture with issues with the program and HC. And yet you wonder why Iowa is at the bottom of the conference. We barely beat the worst team in the conference today at home. But come 2 months from now when players like him transfer shouldn’t come as a big surprise.

Actually, Kingsbury deserved the playing time and Traore didn't. Pretty simple. Kingsbury came in and was effective, especially on defense, and didn't make dumb mistakes. Had Kingsbury not played so well, Traore would've been back in. And BTW: With guys like Mulvey and Kingsbury playing, Iowa won.

And as far as killing a player's confidence, I say BS. If Traore wants to play, then stop throwing up wild shots and making ridiculous passes. Rather than killing his confidence, he should be getting the message that if you want playing time, do your job or I'll find someone who will.
Any athlete who uses being benched for cause as an excuse for losing his confidence isn't anyone you want on your team. IMHO, of course.

It was obvious Traore was getting schooled on the block multiple times in the first four minutes of the game.. Kingsbury came in and did a fantastic defensive job on their big man...pretty simple decision to make on that one...

In addition to the two perhaps questionable shot choices by Traore, it appeared to me that Osobor got where he wanted very easily vs Traore. And if I remember correctly, there was a rebound opportunity where it looked like Traore just backed off instead of trying to tap the ball out. Sorry if my memory isn't perfect, but my thoughts at the time were we need guys out there who won't back down.

I noticed yesterday guys like Mulvey, Brauns, and Kingsbury diving for loose balls, diving to save balls from going out of bounds, etc. Those hustle plays were critical.

Kingsbury is quite “thick” and is 6’5” 225. He was an interesting defensive option and showed he could body up.

Traore is very raw. He has a huge upside but he still needs to work extremely hard on his game to play the amount of minutes individuals on here think he should play. Fran's green light can be a detriment to some players if they don't understand what their strengths are and start doing things they are not able to do.

Kingsbury had zero defensive rebounds in 29 min. Gave up multiple off rebounds and even though he battled when posted up got scored upon and when they went to post a double down came to help that led to multiple 3 attempts. Both fouls led to fts. Speaking of throwing up shots kingsbury 1-4 with some bad misses and UW just daring him to shoot. Absolutely zero reason he should’ve played 3rd most min yesterday. I give mulvey credit he was lot more effective. Reason Fran finally pulled kingsbury where last 2 possessions UW Coach isolating him on the block.

I think Traore sat because he quick shot, not the defense. Fran doesn't bench guys for bad defense, just bad offense.

If Kingsbury can play good defense, then Traore with twice the athletic ability and more size should be even better. That is coaching. Does it take benching Traore 100% after 3 min after starting him a few games....doesn't seem like the most logical approach to teach.

The lineups often don't make a lot of sense with Fran....He doesn't sub to matchup better defensively, doesn't sub situationally for offense or defense, goes to extremes on playing time, forgets guys unless they are related to him or have union cards.

Anyway, we did beat the worst team in B1G at home after getting behind. Winning is better than the alternative. I like the effort they are putting out. I watch every game. The games that bothered me were the epic blowout losses at Wisconsin, UCLA, USC, and Maryland where we looked like the Washington Generals.

Totally disagree. Kingsbury is thicker and bodied Great or whatever his name is. Kingsbury played him pretty well while Traore was getting pushed to the rim every time.

Maybe you should apply for his job. We need a coach like you that has all the answers.

The Sandfort boys and Dix weigh about 215. To your point, Check
Traore 6'7 220. A wash
Brauns 6'9 238. Advantage Brauns
Mulvey 6'11 245. Advantage Mulvey

Fact is they were ALL getting thrown around like rag dolls vs Great (6'8 and 250) and Kepnang (6'11 and 253) per ESPN. Osobor was at Utah State last year and an AP Hon Mention All-American and MW Conference POY. Kepnang played his first 2 yrs @ Oregon and had 2 blocks vs Iowa in the NCAA 2nd rd loss.

Lol.

Iowa's entire front line w/o Freeman is a little light in the loafers and a major reason they got pushed around so much.
Interesting stat: Iowa is 7-0 when they out-rebound their opponents. 330th in rebounding (31.9 / game; 861) while giving up 1003 as of today

Fair points. I still will never understand why Tadjo didn’t get some minutes but agree that Mulvey was effective. Kingsbury did only have 2 fouls in 29 minutes so it’s not like he was getting steamrolled on every possession but I don’t understand why he played so many minutes. He did get some help as you noted but that was sporadic.

You mean guys that weren't getting playing time that decided to try to earn more playing time with effort? Weird.

I was at the game. Dude had his hip in their posts ass and locked him down and didnt get pushed around. I was questioning Kingsbury's minutes as well but he put in a solid effort against their bigs and made some plays. As others have said, Traore is an incredible athlete but if you go out and play half ass you should watch and learn from the effort of those that are rather than sulking.

I, for one, would love to see him learn from this and couple effort with athleticism and turn into a force on offense and defense.

A good coach would not only pull him like he did but put him back in sometime with 37 min left in the game and see how he responds. If he’s good enough to be a starter you think you’d put him back on the floor. Fact that he didn’t even give him a chance to start the 2nd half makes no sense and in my opinion that’s bad coaching. Be it if he did to Traore or any one of the other 4 starters. He even tried to go with a hobbled thelwell both halves to see if he could be effective.

But how many times have you seen teams come out flat coach calls a timeout or pulls some of the guys and they come back out after TO or subbed in little later and respond like a different player/team basically letting you know message received.

Iowa remained “light in the loafers” when Freeman was on the floor all season. He did not help the rebounding numbers.

I thought playing Kingsbury was weird too. But I think he held the big guy to his average, so seems like he did a good job.
I re-watcher the game and Kingsbury made a number of critical hustle plays that led to 2 late 3 pointers from Payton and Brock.
He does have good court awareness and is calm out there.
Traore just has not looked very comfortable out there cept for MD 1st half.
Hope he gets the start vs illini...someone has to guard superfrosh will Riley.

Guys, I just finally watched the game and Traore sat because of offense.

Washington really wanted this game and they had some things scouted well like Traores inability to shoot from the perimeter.

Osobor was intentionally not defending him on the perimeter, and was instead standing in the lane daring him to shoot. He shot twice and missed both.

Fran doesn't do anything based on defense.

No way he is back next year. None of us see how Traore practices. Obvious Fran is not a fan of the young man.
Curious as a coach why you would start the kid several, games in room then bench him after a bad start to a game?
Seems more like a domineering ill tempered coach

But he only took 2 shots. That warrants sitting for 37 minutes? Kingsbury missed 3 out of 4 and had 1 rebound.
