Thelwell and Traore

Don’t tell @LukaDuka. He thinks Fran won’t be able to get any transfers unless the current transfers play 40mpg with zero rest.
I was just throwing it out there for discussion. If you don't think this will enter the equation when portal players looking for starting positions consider Iowa, then you're don't understand the motivation behind transferring to a new team.

But then again, Fran can only get those transfers from the mid majors to consider Iowa, right?

Just giving you shit. You’re really concerned about the minutes they’re getting, but they’re currently 4th & 5th on the team. Only behind the Big 3.

I get it. But this is another reason Fran should go ahead and start them. It projects better to other potential transfers. Come to Iowa, work hard, fit in & you can earn a starting role.

I'm not a trained clinical psychologist, but it appears to me that Dembele is showing a lot of frustration both on the floor and the sideline.

Much speculation, as you know around, who is better. Brock probably had established chemistry with the current team (esp Freeman). But I believe Drew has shown in games he's the better option defensively. And the team definitely needs defense. They've both been serviceable. Drew is a better finisher in the lane & neither are exceptional three point shooters. I don't think Brock will go anywhere as he wasn't highly recruited in the power conferences.

Hence, I'd start the two portal players, IMO.
Brock is hitting 62.5% from the season this year and I think finished the last half of the season well above 40%. He has quietly turned himself into a very respectable 3 point shooter.

I don't see Brock going anywhere either, but it doesn't change the fact that if you are going to argue that its going to hurt the prospect of getting transfers if you don's start them, then you are also going to have trouble retaining players if you automatically start the transfers. We are a program where retainment and development is paramount.

Notably, both Rebraca and Krikke started right away as transfers. I don't think Fran will have an issue with transfers just because this year the transfers aren't starting right away. I really doubt the incoming transfers care whether the last guy that transferred in started.

So, Brock hasn't played poorly this year, but Thelwell has been one of the most efficient players on the team with a PER of 21.4 (vs 15.7) which is second only to Freeman and an EFG% of 64% (vs 50%) which is second only to Pryce. With the exception of assists, all of his per 40 numbers are better and his assist to turnover ratio is better as well. On the defensive side his size gives him a clear advantage. I don't know how you don't start him and give him 25+ per game.

You said it perfectly as a balancing act. You’re never going to make everyone happy. Either transfers are not starting, or you’re recruiting over your HS recruits (Harding/Dembele). Someone is going to get upset.

The most important thing to me is finding the combination that works most effectively on both offense and defense. It’s actually pretty nice to have a group of about nine guys who can play effectively together (solid minutes) and someone always ready to step up if there’s an injury, illness, or an off night. Something we’ve already seen a few times early this season.

Both you & Mohawkeye make good points, but the reason for going to the portal in the first place is to improve the team. That inherently takes recruiting over your incumbents. If the HS recruits are not as good & want to hit the portal sobeit. That's the name of the game today. I know the other side of the argument is "how will we be able to get good HS recruits"? The answer is, who cares if we can get a group of studs through the portal?

That's how Fred & current ISU coach have succeeded. And hasn't many on here complained "If ISU can be successful with transfers, why can't Fran"? I know, it's a conundrum, isn't it?

With all that NIL money Iowa has to work with, the portal should be a reliable source of talent.

Like Mohawk said, it’s balancing act and you’re never going to make everyone happy without the right guys.
