They need to get more games on local TV

For some reason I get Tim Floyd and UTEP on Channel 2.2 more than I get the local team. More and more people are cord cutters and few people want to watch a game on ESPN 3 if they even get that.

The program needs to get more exposure. I was watching a recent high school athlete of the week on channel 9 and Saville gave away an Anthony Clemmons bobblehead. The girl from Central City had no idea who he was and said she didn't have cable. A generation ago everyone in Eastern Iowa at least knew who the Iowa players were.

Having a local station to broadcast an Iowa game is nearly impossible.

As Chewback mentioned, they would need to purchase the rights from BTN or ESPN.

The next obstacle, is trying to get it on TV in place of their regularly scheduled time slot. The national ABC/CBS/FOX/NBC only allows the local affiliate to change broadcasting in place of the other show only a few times a year and it's also expensive.

By selling the rights they are effectively killing the exposure of the team. The BTN has not been a good thing for basketball. They need to re-think this for basketball. How can you market a team that is hard for a lot of people to see. People over 50 are not seeking it out on ESPN 3 in any great numbers.

As for the time slot, that would be easy with digital broadcasting. They could put the games on 2.2 or 9.2 anytime.

there are only a handful of games that are on ESPN3. the team makes a tremendous amount of money from these tv contracts, which helps the team keep up with the Jones and recruit.

a "girl from central city" not knowing a 2nd string point guard on an unranked iowa time is not shocking at all, and is nothing new.

I am more than old enough to remember when all the games were broadcast locally, and that was fine, IF you lived in Iowa. What about all the Hawkeye fans that live elsewhere in the country? And what about potential recruits that would only see Iowa play on ESPN or the BTN? You just going to eliminate them from the viewing audience so you can watch them on you local station? A combination of both would be ideal, but that is unlikely to happen and in this era of sportscasting, Iowa is better off with the current situation. I just wish that the BTN would actually broadcast more of our games. Instead, we see the Indianas, Michigan States, Ohio States of the world playing every game against Podunk U.

the BTN is going to show the games that maximize their revenue, which is distributed back to all the schools. it is what it is. if you want to watch iowa play the handful of games that aren't televised, pay for the BTN online access and ESPN3.

Thats just it. The games are not all on BTN. More and more people are ditching cable too. I dont see how Iowa is better off having a game like Drake on ESPN 3. In the old days, Iowa still had some games on ESPN and the Big 10 had games every weekend that were regionally broadcast, so it wasnt only in Iowa.

Its out of sight out of mind for a lot of people. They have totally lost the casual in state base by going in this direction.

BTN plus, you have to pay a small monthly fee

Iowa has not lost any fans because of ESPN3 or BTN. You make this argument every year, and it just isn't true.

Pretty sure you can't buy one. It's either free with a subscription to a participating cable/satellite company, or you can't get it.
Ah got it.

Next question, for those not being able to get ESPN 3, do you know someone who has cable/satellite?

That's one advantage the Big XII television package has. The individual schools keep third-tier rights -- the primary driver here was Texas with the Longhorn Network -- so if a game isn't picked up by the national networks, it can be made available. The Cyclone Channel on Mediacom exists because of this, as does streaming of games that aren't available elsewhere. So if you have either Mediacom or a computer, you could watch all the ISU MBB games this year.

Things change all the time cornhole. There will be a streaming only option before long....I realize technology is probably tough for you to grasp, but give it a try anyway

Nobody cares about these shitty games, you retard. Otherwise more than 600 people would show up to watch them.

If you're such a hardcore fan, why don't you get your lazy, bandwagon ass down to the arena, then? Pretty sure you still live in Eastern Iowa (unfortunately).

Any game that actually matters (all B1G games, Iowa State, ACC challenge, Thanksgiving tourney games) are all available on national TV. So you're crying like a little bitch because you can't see cupcake games against teams who's mascot you couldn't name if I put a gun to your head.

Go F yourself, pussy.
I have had season tickets forever. Would try to plan my nights around away games on tv. I don't even try to watch on ESPN3. Not going to go to the trouble. If it is on a real channel I will watch. I think a way lot more people feel the same way as I do than not.

I apologize to the board for getting drawn into that.

Its not about me seeing games either BTW. I see them all just fine. Its about getting exposure to the fan base and casual fan in the area. Its tough to market a product that isnt seen by everyone. The question going forward is; When will the BTN offer a streaming option? They depend on the cable model right now and as ESPN has found out that model is on the decline.

What's the trouble with ESPN3? I touch an app on my phone or Kindle and I am watching the game in 30 seconds. Sure, I have to be around Wi-Fi because I am too cheap to pay for a better data package, but it's not like that's a problem if I am sitting at home.

True. Lots of late games, kids can't watch either because of TV availability or past their bed time. It's dangerous for the long term growth of Iowa Basketball.

I live on the east coast and most games start too late for my kids to watch. When I was young in Iowa, The baby sitter knew to turn on the game and we watched while my parents were at the game. Not so easy for kids/families today.

Call me old fashioned, but there was some kind of good aura when the games were on WHO with Jim Zabel calling them.
Hawks would win the close ones...always make the tournament....win the big ones....

No, they lost those games. Zabel SAID they won them. Big, big difference.

May he rest in peace.

I don't know about losing the casual fan, but one reason I cut the cord was the number of games moved to ESPNU/ESPN3/BTN Plus that I couldn't watch. So now I follow via radio, Gametracker, or if I really want to watch I find a bar.

A lot of geezers in this thread. Join the 21st century fellas. Streaming is the future, embrace it or keep writing checks at the grocery store that pisses everyone off.

Anyone in this thread saying embracing streaming platforms as shortsighted are horribly out of touch.

In my case I get my internet from a different provider than I got cable, which sunk me for ESPN3. Now that I don't have cable I can't get BTN Plus anyway, at least for now. I do think streaming is the way to go (e.g. HBO), but ESPN & BTN are going to be drug along kicking and screaming, when they do finally budge.

BTN Plus is lame

"Games and events included in your BTN Plus subscription are non-televised games and events. To check if a game is included with your BTN Plus subscription, look for the "BTN Plus" designation next to the game or event you want to watch. A BTN Plus Subscription does not include access to other televised (BTN/ESPN/CBS/etc.) content on BTN2Go."

If they want to sell the full subscription, fine but thats not what they are doing. The Big 10 is hooked to cable fees, they are not going to sell a product that will undercut their golden goose. However it will go away someday and they will have to go full streaming.

Get a DVR.

Wrong.

BTN Plus is available to everyone, whether you have cable or not.

With a basic cable/internet I have been able to watch every game this year (except Marquette, f-ing FS1). I'm pretty sure if you have those utilities you can watch all of the games. Also people seem to be confusing BTN Plus and BTN2GO. None of the games have been on BTN Plus so far this year. Also if you are mad that you can't watch the streaming game on your TV, just buy a roku. $30 and your problem is solved.

I think the point of this thread is not that you can't get the game anywhere. It's that the casual fan has to work for it. It is not shown on the TV at your local bar, you can't turn on the TV and stumble across it. Instead the viewer has to know when the game is, plan to be in a location that can stream it, have your laptop or tablet with u etc. Point being that unless you are a diehard fan u are not going to watch. I hate the fact Iowa is not on TV. I have watched more isu games this year than Iowa games and I hate isu.

What if I only have Internet on my phone and want to watch it on my tv, will the roku work through my phone?

From the website: "If you do not have BTN at home, you will not be able to get it through BTN Plus."

It would help if you could actually comprehend what you're reading.

Try reading it again and see if you can figure out why you look like an idiot right now.

All the good games have been on tv, and all the big ten games will be on tv. The casual fan does not care to watch Iowa play Tennessee tech, and the diehard fans can stream it in hd on their flat screens. Quit crying.

Quit complaining and just show up to watch the games in person like the other 4000-5000 other Hawk fans do at Carver.

Yes, turn the hotspot function on your phone on and then you should be able to connect to the phone's internet with the roku
