This one is short as my daughter got into a car accident yesterday and I had go deal with that. Missed the 1st half. Everybody’s okay and it was the other drivers fault. Plus he had no insurance. Ya I know that’s a cool story. So lets get on with this shall we. :)

The game looked really odd. It seems the first drives of the halves Iowa just moved the ball at will. Then it was 3 and out for a quarter and a half. That’s what it seemed like anyway.

Stole this idea from the broadcast yesterday.
Iowa’s 3 scoring drives = 21 plays 206 yards. 9.8 yards per play.
All other drives = 37 plays 114 yards. 3.1 yards per play.

Drops killed us on offense. 6 drops – resulted in INT, 4 lost 1st downs, forced a FG in the Redzone and I conservatively think 100 yards of offense. Drive Killers.

Iowa had 13 drops in 1st 6 games. 11 in last 2. Not a good trend.

Nate did not throw an incompletion on 1st down. 1 INT that wasn’t his fault.

Brady Quinn looks like his name should have been Chaz in the 50s. Pretty sure he was wearing lip stick.

We had 3 holding calls. The calls on Welsh and Render were ridiculous. I thought the one on Hockensen was legitimate.

Minnesota had given up 5 sacks all year, they gave up 4 to Iowa. I thought our pass pressure was really good for the most part.

Iowa gave up no sacks and when pressured Nate did a tremendous job of escaping it. He’s pretty nimble in the pocket, it’s when he’s outside the pocket he looks a little stiff. Ha.

Minnesota has a guy at 6’10 to which they said he was the tallest “skill position” player in the country. That means somewhere there is a guy taller than 6’10 playing football.

Josh Jackson and Parker Hesse were the MVP’s for me today. Hesse was relentless and Jackson was a shut down corner. Really curious as to how he does against Ohio State next week. Whole other ball game there. He’s been really good all year though.

1st QTR
1ST play Hockensen lowers the boom on the DB. He actual picks the DB off the ground with his shoulders.
12:40 Wadley TD, Hockensen and Jackson completely blew open the whole and Render with a great seal block as well.
12:20 #86 for the rodents tackles Nieman from behind as he was about to get a guy for a tackle for loss.
Next play – Anthony Nelson held badly.
Kickoff – Really liked what I saw here from Miles Taylor. He was the first one down the field and slowed up the returner and then gets up fired up. No pouting from him, just accepting his new role.
8:15 Hesse about to get a sack and he’s grabbed by his shoulder pads and pulled back.
4:19 Bazata and Nelson almost get the sack, they pick up 8 or 3rd and 9 but I’m always impressed when I see a DE rushing the QB and then downfield in front of the guy who caught the ball> Great hustle by Parker Hesse.
next play, 4th and 1, that play was blown up by Nieman and Josey who completely took him out of his route.
Next play, ball goes right off of ISM’s facemask. I thought the pick was a good call. He had control before it hit the ground and the ground didn’t appear to move in his hands when it did touch.
:36 How many times has Josh Jackson hung in the air this year to knock away a pass. I think he punched that ball on purpose to give our other guys a shot at the pick. Could be wishful thinking on my part.

2ND QTR
14:!4 AJ and Nelson once again so close on the sacks, Josh Jackson once again playing really well.
13:35 Render with a pancake block, refs call it a hold. Horrible call.
Next play, all 3 Rodent linebackers go with ISM on the fake jet sweep, Nate gets 7 yards.
12:12 After the punt, right before the commercial. I thought that Iowa cheerleader looked just like Miranda Lambert.
10:35 AJ with a ridiculous spin move, Lattimore pancakes the guard.
5:01 Brady Ross with a great block to get ISM some room on the jet sweep, Vandeberg with some good blocking as well.
4:05 On the replay, they showed Easley about 15 yards from anybody downfield.
3:30 I thought that was helmet to helmet on Wadley. Should have been a penalty.
1:23 Welsh and Daniels feet get tangled up and they both fall down, result loss of 3 yards.
Next play, Nate once again showing an really good ability to escape pressure.
Next play, I think it was a fumble. Great effort by Butler up until that though, he was fighting for yards.

3RD QTR
Kickoff, Watch Jones collide with a blocker. The blocker goes back a few yards, Jones goes in to make the tackle.
11:35 Hockensen and Daniels with great blocks on this nice run by Wadley. Funny part is this was the same play the crowd was booing 2 plays earlier.
Next play, The safety was drawn away from Fant by ISM. They really thought that ball was going to him. After the TD catch, Noah Fant rows the boat. LOL.
10:54 Kickoff, Stone with the tackle assisted by Dafney. Dafney was held right before that as well.
Next play, Gervase puts Shannon Brooks out of the game with a huge hit to the back.
9:25 The Outlaw clearly hurt on this play and probably was in pain all game.
7:15 Wadley clearly held by LB coming out of the backfield on a wheel route.

4TH QTR
11:04 AJ and Brincks so close on the sack. Seemed all day Iowa was right there forcing a quick throw.
7:40 Jackson on a Rodent CB. Not fair. The replay is a great shot from behind of him destroying him.
5:40 Okay @rivercityjazzman, that was my first lean of the season. Back to practice with Miguel. J
5:28 Manny lines up right in front of the WR. Somehow when that ball is thrown Manny is 8 yards deeper than the WR. Really bad play. He got deeper than Gervase.
2:15 Probably our worst play of the day that wasn’t a turnover. Render is pushed 3 yards back into Butler by a DT. He was pulling so probably caught him off guard.

WHAT!? We passed out of an audible?:eek::eek:

But yeah Jackson definitely punched that ball back for one of the guys to pick it off. Great heads up play.

Here are some stats to go with your 1st down stats above. Against NW, passing out of the shotgun formation, we were 7-15 for 56 yards, 3.73 YPA. With QB under center, Stanley was 12-18 for 167 yards, 9.28 YPA. It's pretty clear we are much better passing in QB under center formations.

Drops are killing the O. What ifs - Hockenson holds on the the 25ish yarder, in FG position without moving the ball another yd; ISM uses his hands rather than facemask = likely 90 yd td pass, Vandy drops one on third down, Easley with his recent obligatory drop killed another drive. Theses guys would make these catches 9 out of 10 times (Hockenson probably deserves a pass on his - good hit by the goofer).

The pedestrian offense was a few ifs and buts from routing minnesota.

Oh, and our punting still kills us in the field position game.

Jackson's ability to hang in the air for so long is amazing. That skill sets him apart from any Iowa CB in recent memory although King has a bit better instincts. What's remarkable is that on a couple occasions, Josh was able to hang above the receiver's back shoulder and knock the ball away without committing an interference penalty.

Thanks dawg. Glad to hear your daughter is OK.

I dunno how the qb overthrew their wide open 6'10" TE .

I told you how, he was supposed to be deeper into the endzone when that ball was thrown, but thanks to Nieman and Josey he was slowed down on his route. Both got great shots on him.

Posted this in the lounge.

Drop 1 - ISM would have been at least 50 yards, a 1st down, flipped the field position, amd gave us 3 more plays. Instead Minnesota ball.
Drop 2 - Hockensen, minimum 21 yards giving us 1st down at 40, instead we punt from 19.
Drop 3 - IKM. Probably would have been a loss or short gain anyway, so not too damning.
Drop 4 - Wadley, it was 3rd and 11 and he would have gotten at least 5 but he was also 1 on 1 with a safety, you never know.
Drop 5 - Vandeberg, Would have been good for 17 yards, a 1st down at the 37, instead we punt from 20.
Drop 6 - HOckensen, minimum of 7 yards and setting up 1st and goal, instead we kick a FG.

That stuff adds up.

Nate's stat line would have been 21-27-290-1TD and we would have 12 more plays to run if there were no drops.

The same way Stanley overthrew some of our guys, in earlier games. The guy stopped running or ran the wrong route. It takes two to dance.

I told you how, he was supposed to be deeper into the endzone when that ball was thrown, but thanks to Nieman and Josey he was slowed down on his route. Both got great shots on him.

In his post-game presser, Fleck blamed the receiver and claimed that the pass was not completed because the receiver turned and started to back-peddle to soon.

In any event, he wasn't where QB Croft anticipated he would be. Still, Croft could have used a little more ally oop there.... maybe if he was 7'6" instead....

How many were playaction?

That's a good question, not sure. A good portion were just straight drop backs and some roll outs which have the advantage of keeping the QB's eyes downfield and also keeping the defense guessing. Stanley just looks more decisive, more often, when he lines up under center, playaction or not.

I dunno how the qb overthrew their wide open 6'10" TE .

I could be wrong, but it looked like the TE got his feet turned around and the turf monster got him causing him to trip/stumble.

Edit:
I take that back, just rewatched it.

TE starts back pedaling at the 1 1/2-2 yd line right as the ball was thrown. The TE was hedged twice at the LOS. The ball landed about 7 yds deep in the end zone.

You could put that miss on both the TE and the QB. He was wide open for a TD. The TE started back pedaling way too early and the QB over shot him regardless. Either way, huge break for the Iowa Def.

Yup, TE definitely backpedalled on that one. Hey ya never know, maybe he would have dropped it- he missed an easy one earlier in the game. That would have been a gimme though.

Cliff notes: ugly game is ugly
A game between two, extremely mediocre teams. Minny has a legit excuse with the expulsions and a new coaching staff. Not a lot of talent on that team.
Iowa's excuse for being mediocre... poor recruiting resulting in no qualified reserves when the injury bug bites. And has been hashed over before, not a lot of talent at wr.

Not to pick more on Fleck, but didn't that quote seem to be a bit of 'blame that player, not my coaching'. I dont think we was really wrong, but just don't see college coaches call out players mistakes like that too often in the press. Good way to build team unity.

Easley didn't have a drop against Minnesota.
