Very long and very wordy. Just some things I noticed re-watching.
Millen lines
“This is the most jacked referee crew in the B1G”
“If you’re going to start the night getting 3 yards push off the LOS and making noses bloody, you are telling the defense it’s going to be a long night.
“CJ liked something there but in the course of liking it he disliked it very fast.”
“I always error on the side of the defensive guy”
“Desmond King dictates where the ball isn’t going to go, because it isn’t going to him”
“Keep in mind Desmond King has completely taken away half of the field. You can’t even look that way or it will hurt you.”
“Earlier in his career Wadley was heavily in the doghouse. He was so far in the doghouse he was scratching fleas”
“he made change on that dime; there’s two nickels out there” on Wadley’s TD run.”
Dandy Don “Turn it out the lights, the party is over”
Chuck Long, Bo Jackson won the Heisman but I was a much better athlete. That was funny as hell.
2nd play from scrimmage, CJ throw to Vandeberg but it was Kittle that opened that up, completely wiped out the CB.
Ike pancakes a LB on Wadley’s first run 13:30 mark of 1st quarter. Actually decleats him. It looked unfair. Almost like one of the Rudy in practice highlights.
Coluzzi has done a tremendous job at punter in the first two weeks. I see why the coaches ended this competition fairly quickly.
Last year PAT’s were an adventure, all of Duncans are right down the middle. It has me doing a lot less shoulder swerving during those plays and that’s a good thing.
The first punt return, Jackson so wanted to lay a block on ISU but it would have been clipping. Seen that penalty so many times I was glad he didn’t do it.
9:49 of 2nd quarter, Vandeberg is wide open and I think he was wide open because we set our FB out in the pattern and the CB jumped it leaving that part of the field open for Matt. Also, Kittle was 1st play of 2nd drive,
Iowa’s 1st TD to Kittle, Mitchel got triple covered out of the backfield.
7:10 1st quarter, this is how I would like Daniels to run all the time. He got tackled but safety paid for it. Maybe it’s been health but he ran like you would expect a beast like him to run last night.
Scheel was in the game on the 3rd drive
6:14 left watch Kulick at FB. OMG was that awesome. He not only blocked the LB he looked like a lion attacking a wounded gazelle. It was sweet.
Jaleel’s sack in 1st quarter, he pancakes the guard.
After ISU’s FG, Desmond brings it out of the end zone, Austin Kelly misses a block, and turns around to get the guy he just missed found a different guy and decleats him.
It’s not uncommon but on Vandy’s reverse, I love seeing the Center for Iowa 35 yards downfield looking for somebody to block. He had nobody to block but love the hustle.
Wadley’s TD catch, Long talked about how the OL and CJ sold it but Wadley sold it as well. Watch him out of the backfield, he almost stops and sells it like it’s something short. Then he just blew by them.
11:00 in the 2nd quarter, Ike throws a cyclone to on the ground then grabs Leshun and drags Leshun for the 1st down. Love his game.
Vandy’s TD catch, LB blitzes and Boone stones him cold and then pushes him to the ground and for good measure body slams him.
The call most of us thought was a phantom face mask happened right at the line of scrimmage. Mabin incidentally grabbed Lazards facemask. Good call.
Last week the game was over after the 1st quarter, against ISU it was over with 8 minutes left in 2nd quarter. 4th and 1, down 21-3 and Campbell punts it after giving up 3 straight TD’s. That’s waving a white flag.
All of Vandy’s great catches, #1 was right in his hip pocket. Cant’ guard much better than that just perfectly thrown balls by CJ and great concentration by Matt.
6:36 in 2nd, Ike pancakes the LB #9. #9 was on his back a lot last night.
5:30 in the 2nd, Akrum with an ankle breaker. That was sick and anytime announcers are comparing you to Barry Sanders you have something.
Sean Welsh came out at 4:17 2nd quarter with ankle injury. Think everyone knew that just not sure they knew when.
CJ’s 1st sack was on. It looked like Ike had him and got a bit high and lost leverage. Although Render didn’t block anyone and should have helped to the inside.
Iowa’s 1st punt of 2nd half, Kluver the long snapper was the first guy down.
9:09 in the 3rd was the first bad play I saw by Legrand. Tucker dominated him. But for his first start, I like what I saw which really don’t mean much.
8:12 in the 3rd, screen to Mitchel, Boone Meyers drives his man 15 yards down field and don’t let up until the whistle blows.
Only 1 drop all night for Iowa and it just so happened to be our best WR with the easy catch he had in the game. Go figure. Shit happens.
7:34 in 3rd was the Render play that had me all fired up. LB blitzes and he stones him.
Wadley’s beautiful run right before his TD the one with the spin move. So many great blocks to go along with that natural talent but my favorite was Pekar. His block made that possible. He took a DT completely out of the play.
On the following play, Wadley’s TD run, Pekar once again takes a DT all the way into the end zone. DT gets so frustrated it looks like he threw a punch but it wasn’t.
Like after Wadley’s running TD he immediately looks at the OL and acknowledges their performance.
2:36 in 3rd, Lanning keeps it and Josey destroys him even though you could tell he was being very careful where he hit him and how he hit him.
Daniels long TD run, George Kittle cleared it all the way. First guy to meet Daniels on the sidelines was Akrum.
8:12 left to play, ISU RB throws a monster stiff arm at Gair and Gair plants him.
King never left his side of the field in coverage. It wasn’t necessary either. Mabin was fine.
Our nickel featured Manny Rugamba not Joshua Jackson. Josh Jackson played a lot on special teams so not sure if he got passed up or if the game was in hand and they wanted to get Manny some work.
During the course of the game Weigers had the headset on. Never really saw Stanley to see if he had one on as well. Not sure if that means anything but just something I noticed.
The phone light thing looked really cool once again. Was better in person last year against Minny but it looked good on TV. The stadium colors were pretty cool as well
Congratulations to Matt Vandeberg who is now engaged. I met his fiancé. My niece was on the dance team (no pics) and his fiancé if that is still her took pictures on the sidelines. Nice woman.
My sister “she’s 53 so no pic” knows Joel Lanning’s dad. She said he was pissed when they pulled him out of the game.
More than a few times we dropped Matt and Anthony Nelson into coverage. Only rushed 3 on each occasion.
When 2nd team defense came in the 4th quarter, Brady Reiff was the DE that came in with Brincks. Lattimore was at DT with Faith. Hockaday, Mends and Ward at LB, Rugamba and Jackson at CB and Gair and Grevase at safety. I don’t really pay much attention to a KF two deep but that’s who the 2nd team defense was last night.
Garrett Jansen came in later on in the drive for Faith.
The next drive, your LB’s were Amani Jones, Angelo Garbutt and Kristian Welch. Ojemudia was in at CB for Jackson. Hooker was in at safety for Gair. Jansen then moved out to DE and then Daniels Gaffey was in at DT. We played a lot of players.
2nd team OL Ryan Ward, Ross Reynolds, Ferentz, Dalton Fergurson RG, and Levi Paulsen. Levi very slow off the ball in pass protection.
Derrick Mitchel appears to be our 2nd team punt returner. Don’t know who is our 2nd team kick returner because Iowa State never got that chance.
After 2nd team offense came off the field for the first time, Brian Ferentz had some words for
younger brother. He didn’t look pleased.
The 2nd time our backups were in on offense. Landen Paulsen at RG and Mitch Keppy at RT.
FWIW, Tyler Weigers doesn’t appear to be too upset on the sidelines. Maybe he’s a kid that has no issue with getting his pre-med paid for. Just a thought.
Toks dishing out some punishment there to end the game fittingly.
So far we have played two bad teams and one bother were over by the middle of the 2nd quarter. So we are doing what we are supposed to be doing.
