….when you take away all opportunities for fans to interact and get to know your players and program.

Fran got rid of the following:

1. Primetime League
2. Shirts and Skins
3. Black & Gold Blowout
4. Round Robin games with other 3 instate programs (replaced by games against the absolute worst teams in the country).
5. Call-in show

Not to mention numerous vendettas against pretty much every major media figure in the state.

When you refuse to do anything to market your program to the public, apathy was always going to be the end result. Then when you have a down year or two, there’s no one left to come to your defense.

Is that you dochterman.

I thought the PTL had to go due to NCAA rules, but you may be right.
I think originally PTL was set up as a way for players to get some games in during the offseason, when coaches weren’t allowed to instruct players. Then they relaxed the rules, giving teams more opportunities for summer practices. So part of the justification for the PTL was gone. But there was no rule prohibiting it.

And then wonder why no one is donating to the Swarm..

Fran didn’t suck. It’s revisionist history to say something so dumb. Lick sucked. Fran pulled the program out of the ditch. He may have ended up average but he hardly sucked.
He was an offensive genius. His teaching of defense and rebounding sucked and his in game adjustments, use of timeouts, and 2 foul jail were bad. All in all, average coach that didn’t deserve 15 years.

So, what you're saying is the next coach better institute #1 to #5 or they are on the way out before they even get started?

Not sure where you got that from…maybe take it for what it says and not put words in my mouth to fit whatever narrative you’re trying to push. The facts are, he took those opportunities away that gave fans a chance to interact with the players and be invested more in the program and didn’t replace them with anything. This led to apathy. The next coach will need to do multiple things to bring back fans and allow them to get reinvested in the program.

Actually, a similar situation as the Tom Davis era. Davis had deficiencies that he would not change as well, and it became obvious that Iowa would never achieve anything above a very occasional sweet 16 level. Davis' maximum was at a notch higher than Fran's, though.

I like Fran, but Iowa had to make the change. You roll the dice, and see what you get. Eventually you should hit a winner.

He was a 0.500 conference coach, losing record in both BTT and NCAA tourney. I think his credit for being an offensive mastermind is overstated.

I don't think it's offensive genius to extend your defense, go for the steal and if you don't get the steal, give up an easy basket but try to get it back with a quick basket the other way. You do see the logic flaw in giving up an easy basket to sometimes get an easy one back? That strategy inflates you offensive numbers but doesn't lead to more wins.

The other thing he did was never matchup the opposing team defensively. It was always about maximizing offense and not caring at all about defense and rebounding in his roster construction or substituition patterns. Again, that improves offense, not good for defense.

He had a system that maximized Luka Garza scoring. He had a system that gave PMAC lots of shots without requiring him to defend/rebound. He had a system that let JBO keep the ball in his hands and make deep shots, and try to hide him on defense.
