This might be a little tougher than Putin thought...

Putin could be open to a pause in fighting amid Russia-Ukraine war: Report

Russian President Vladimir Putin may be open to a cease-fire in his war with Ukraine, so long as the country could still declare victory, a new report by the New York Times found.

Putin, still confident in his forces, said that Russia’s goals have not changed. In his annual year-end press conference last week, Putin warned that there would be no peace solution in Ukraine until Russia achieves its overarching goals, the “denazification” and demilitarization of Ukraine.
Putin’s message might be different now, as he has reportedly signaled he is ready to make a deal. Since September, Putin has signaled that he is open to a pause in fighting along the current lines, which is much shorter than his intention to dominate Ukraine, according to the Times who cited two former senior Russian officials.

According to the United Nations, more than 10,000 civilians have been killed and 18,500 have been injured since the start of the war nearly two years ago.

According to American officials, Putin also put out feelers for a ceasefire in the fall of 2022 after he was not happy with how much territory Russia had captured.

“Mr. Putin’s repeated interest in a cease-fire is an example of how opportunism and improvisation have defined his approach to the war behind closed doors,” the Times wrote.

The Times said they conducted dozens of interviews with Russians who have known Putin for years that shine a light on his maneuvering to avoid risks and keep his options open in the war that’s lasted longer than he thought it would.

The officials that spoke with the Times said Putin sees several reasons that make now a good moment to make a deal, particularly since the war seems stuck in a stalemate, Ukraine’s offensive has been disappointing and the onset of the Israel-Hamas war.

According to the Kremlin’s analysis, public support for the war is broad but not deep, which means most people would accept whatever Putin would deem as a victory.

Some Western officials are skeptical that Putin would only rearm and rebuild during a cease-fire.

There is no guarantee that Ukraine’s leaders would accept a deal, though the country has been struggling to finance its military amid delays in funding from both Europe and the United States.

That and Schumer thought he wouldn’t have to negotiate….wasted a lot of time. Didn’t get serious about it till last week
Schumer is an old time deal making politician. Breadbags or any Republican has been capable of talking immigration with Schumer or any Dem for the last 20 years.
Trump is a narcissistic child who is in charge of the cult that the GOP has become. Are you purposefully ignorant of why a corrupt narcissist like Trump wants to punish Zelensky? Do you not understand the cult like state of today's GOP where the few normal politicians piss themselves over the thought of a primary challenge?

And I think those in administration with Putinphobia (give them only 31 Abrams tanks, letting the UK take the lead on tanks and cruise missiles, no long range ATACMS) are dragging their feet too. I'm beginning to fear that Biden really IS playing this for the tie-deadlock.
There have been cold feet, and that's unfortunate. We have been too timid at times, especially in response to Putin's nuclear saber rattling. He was never going to use nukes. We moved too slowly with the F-16s. I would be fine with tripling the number of Abrams tanks, but at least there you can argue that adding an extra platform with it's required parts and maintenance is less effective than concentrating on providing Leopards from various nations, and scrounging for every T-72 we could find.
The failure to provide ATACMS is an utter failure by the Biden Administration. I still have my hopes that they are included in future packages as part of a draw down, maybe to counter the current dithering in the Senate.

If true, when I saw the news on 3 Su-34s going down at once I immediately thought that the Ukrainians had laid a trap, and utilized a new weapon in a new area at just the right time.
And, it isn't just the planes, that's up to 6 highly trained pilots/weapons officers. Wikipedia says Russia only built 150 or so of these jets, and going back over 30 years that's a lot of airframes that have been retired or lost due to accidents and the such. Losing 3 in one day is a huge loss for the Russians.

WTF does that have to do with what I posted?

"1. Kamikaze drones of the Tactical Group "Adam" of the Ukrainian Armed Forces discovered a column of armored vehicles of the #russian occupiers as it advanced to attack. It is paradoxical that the column is well equipped, obviously with fairly 2. new armored vehicles, but at the same time it is very poorly covered by electronic warfare equipment, which allowed the Ukrainian drone operators to reap a good harvest."

HESCO Barriers In Aid Package Indicate Shift In Ukraine’s War Strategy

The contents of aid packages sent to Ukraine typically offer insights into the status of the Russia-Ukraine War and assist in forecasting the upcoming phases of military operations. For example, leading up to the Ukrainian counter-offensive, the aid packages included a number of armored vehicles and other systems that would be needed to attack Russian forces. The most recent aid package was discussed in the December 12 meeting between Ukrainian President Zelensky and American President Biden. A subsequent statement from the State Department enumerated the content of this aid, including a large amount of munitions, demolition equipment, and HESCO barriers. While many of the items were expected, the inclusion of HESCO barriers indicates a possible shift in the Ukrainian war effort to being more defensive.

HESCO barriers are collapsible geotextile-lined, welded mesh baskets that unfold into large cubes. Once unfolded, these cubes are then packed with dirt and interlocked together to form a wall. Since each basket contains a substantial amount of packed dirt, a HESCO wall is able to withstand a significant blast and stop most direct-fire rounds, offering more protection than a concrete wall. Furthermore, a team of soldiers equipped with a front-end loader can rapidly fill these baskets, effectively establishing a very strong defensive position in a matter of hours.

Originally designed for flood control purposes, HESCO barriers gained widespread military application during the 1960s. They became a staple asset during the Global War on Terror, particularly associated with U.S. forward operating bases. Many of these bases were enclosed by a stacked wall of 2 m HESCO cubes. Though not intended to be a permanent structure, these barriers can maintain their structural integrity for over a decade. Given their extensive use by the U.S. military, it is likely that substantial stockpiles were available to be provided to Ukraine.

The delivery of HESCO barriers to Ukraine indicates a need for the Ukrainians to quickly assume a defensive posture, likely to fight back a new offensive launched by Russian forces. While this Russian offensive has already started, it will likely escalate in the coming months. These barriers will offer Ukrainian forces the means to fortify their positions and construct expeditionary bases along their current lines. Upon establishing these fortified positions, the Ukrainian forces can integrate the physical defenses with other key equipment, including anti-air assets and electronic warfare equipment to jam drones. Such positions would be difficult for Russian forces to overrun.

You keep pretending that tying Ukraine to immigration is a legitimate tactic, and blame Dems over it. We've had decades to talk immigration. They are unrelated issues.
Ukraine aid has Israel, Gaza and Indopacific aid attached. No reason border measures can’t be…and it’s been known that was needed since Oct 8th.

Split government requires negotiation and compromise.

Got it, just like on 12/8/1941 when Republicans demanded that FDR roll back parts of the New Deal before they agreed to declare war on Japan. Day of Infamy and all, but, you got to give a little to get a little.

It’s nothing like that…at all.

Have a Merry Christmas Lucas!!
