If you Google lurk you can get a decent view of some of the expansion of the air base and catch Western jets on the tarmac there to support Romania.
There is also a large training area that is being utilized by NATO. Adding a poor former Soviet bloc nation did have some advantages. Lots of bases to redevelop, and large areas in a poorer country where they don't mind live fire drills.
If Assad falls what does that mean. He’s been an import check for them in that area.
The Russians stripped those bases of assets and the best troops to ship to Ukraine. Mainly they were there to bomb civilians, so it isn't surprising they are collapsing. Losing access to their key airbase and the port at Tartus will really hurt Russia. It basically cuts them out of the Mediterranean
What comes next in Syria probably isn't going to be good, however.

My fear would be a Somalia type situation. Different factions fighting over dominance. Once the common enemy disappears.
Most of them are from areas that major cities don’t give a shit about. Citizen’s of Moscow don’t care about some 19 year olds from Serbia or some other province. While people in NYC would certainly be shocked about 4000 US soldiers dying no matter where they are from.

They are excited about countering Iran. They aren't excited about a failed state on their border and refugees pouring in.
Russia is suffering massive losses in Ukraine and appears to be cutting and running out of Syria.
