This team is still alive for the Dance

The open 3's are the killer. You can win regular season games when the other team isn't making the 3's, but once you get into the NCAA tourney, in round 1 or 2 you're going to have a team that will be making their 3's. That's why it's hard to get to the sweet 16 when allowing teams to have open 3's.
I agree, but we did just beat a team on the road who shot 50% from three...

We’re playing better defense over the last 8 games or so. We defended MSU pretty well for the most part. I think the players are starting to realize they can’t win without defending.

I actually don't think these losses matter that much. The problem with Iowa's resume is that lack of quad 1 wins. They would need more quad 1 wins even if they won those games.
Understand what you are saying BUT 18-9 would be pretty sweet right now.

Using Bart Torvik's efficency metrics we are ranked #51 for the full season and #45 for the last 30 days specifically, so a slight improvement recently.

These are tournament games right here, just not in a single elimination format yet.

Buckle up and enjoy. Go Hawks!

They’re still alive for the big dance, technically, but I think we all know the end of this story. I wanna have more optimism, but I’m just looking at the numbers and the math just isn’t going to add up for us. Sitting at #62 in NET right now - only moving up five spots after the MSU win - and only having 2 quad 1 wins (I think) just ain’t gonna get it done. Even with a sweep of the next four games - which might technically get us to 5 quad 1 wins, I don’t think we’d make it. The BIG isn’t strong enough this year imo.

Sure hope I’m wrong. Perk deserves it!!

At the end of the day, I'm pretty sure BG knows that the only measures for success in MBB are NCAA tourney success and regular season titles or co-titles etc. I've always thought winning the BTT was worthless and a net negative for Iowa in the NCAAT which means in the things that matter in 2024, Fran has not really accomplished anything in his 12 years. I saw where Fran said he's not retiring. If he doesn't check one of the above boxes in the next couple of years, his hand will be forced. Having said that I am liking this years team and think maybe he's found a winning formula. We haven't been "tough" very often under Fran. Krikke was a monster last night.
Why do you think the BTT is worthless? It allows a team that's on the bubble or off the bubble get in the tournament.

It’s probably going to take beating Illinois.

As bad as big ten seems there is a lot of parity between teams outside of top 10 this year. Big ten is still second overall in NET ranking. Probably do to how bad some other conferences worst teams are.

Minnesota on the road is on the edge of becoming a tier 1. If Iowa could get 1 against Illinois and Northwestern that would push them to 4/5 tier one. If you look at teams on the bubble their resume would be very similar to those teams.

If they win out the regular season... I think they are an NCAA lock, regardless of the BTT. They'd be on a 6 game win streak to close the regular season. What 5 or 6 quad1 wins. No quad 4 losses. 20 wins. Upper half of the B1G, even when "weak", should be IN.

PROBABLY won't have to worry about this scenario, since beating Illinois TWICE is unlikely.

It would be nice to lose to the likes of Utah St and CSU, beat Fresno and SanJose st and be climbing in the seedings! Wtf?

I find this helpful. Takes a bit to load. At the bottom "defcon" area. These are the wins Iowa would want, all related to the NCAA tournament. Note - this does not regard B1G seeding preferences, only the NCAA tournament related data. It takes into account the teams we've played that could affect net, those on the bubble competing with Iowa (we want them to lose), etc. "Defcon 1" appears on our game day, and that is always Iowa ofc.
