I watched much of this game and here are my thoughts:

Offense: They are not a very fast team. They had relatively little to no success whenever they tried to stretch run plays outside the tackles. Northwestern pursued very quickly to the ball and tackled well in space. Their pass game reminds me a little of Iowa's. They aren't that vertical and they don't have the playmakers like Burbridge. They like to throw to McCaffrey out of the backfield a lot in the pass game. Northwestern did a good job covering that up. A lot of times he was even double covered out of the backfield up the sideline. He didn't get many carries this game because Northwestern forced them into a lot of 2nd and 3rd and longs. Hogan reminds me a little bit of Jake Ruddock throwing the ball but he's a little more physical. If Iowa can stop the power running plays between the tackles I like this matchup.

Defense: They remind me a little bit of past Iowa defenses. They don't present a matchup problem like Calhoun did with his speed and power pass rush. Northwestern's Jackson seemed to have room to get 3 yards every touch. This would be an ideal matchup for Canzeri or Wadley, Daniels not so much. Their defense has much of the same limitations as their offense. They aren't incredibly fast. They do send some blitzes from the secondary to get pressure. Northwestern was able to beat them on the edges and find open running lanes with Thorson and Jackson.

First game of the season. For me, doesn't mean alot.

Maybe from the standpoint of consistency but Northwestern was clearly the more athletic team on the field. Does that mean they would beat Stanford today? I don't know but athletes don't change much over a few months, just schemes and consistency.

The Stanford Offense went through some changes in the first couple weeks before they found the right fit. The Defense isnt a typical Stanford D but they are still a very efficient D. They don't have one stud pass rusher but they have several guys that can get to the QB. They still had 27 sacks on the year and our pass protection has been very so so all year. The Stanford D gives up yards but they make it very hard to score TD's in the red zone while their red zone offense is very good kind of like Iowa's. They don't create a lot of turnovers but they don't give the ball away either. This will be a very interesting game. Stanford avg's 35 mpg with the ball and they are very good at scoring TD's when in the red zone. Iowa is almost a mirror image. This game will come down to who controls the field position and who can put the ball in the end zone instead of kicking FG's. One key is the Stanford kicker is much much better then the MSU kicker. He can make those long FG's.

Stanford had to get on a plane, and the game started kind of early for them. Therefore, don't count, didn't happen, totally irrelevant.

what if they practice in the morning like Iowa? Obviously they came in the day before maybe even two days.

Nope, the game definitely counts. The coaching staff knew full well of the time difference so that's not a logical excuse.

I was being facetious and poking fun at the inane arguments about Stanford's loss basically being ignored by the talking heads.
