Reasons for apparent lack of portal success so far?

What is the main factor in Iowa’s seeming lack of portal success so far?

Yet, Iowa football has hovered between 40-55K season ticket holders for years. The money is there. People need to realize that donating to the school isn't the same as donating to SWARM. If you hate the condition of Iowa football, cancel your season tickets and donate an equal amount to the collective. And this doesn't even mention becoming a Champion level donation member through SWARM, which even a high school kid with a part-time job could afford.

Yeah, there's hardly enough transparency for me to discern whether it's better to contribute to Iowa or the Swarm. Right now I'm just building a cash pile so I can buy my own long snapper -- the Iowa HawkNole Long Snapper. It's got a ring to it. ;)

The "iowa way" limits what kirk will go after. Any kids with the most minor character flaw automatically disqualifies him from joining the almighty good boys of Iowa university.

He's proven time and time again as long as the kid tries his hardest he feels that will take them to their winning ways yet we have seen any time they go up against real top 10-15 talent those high character guys get their sh*t kicked in for 4 qtrs.

I feel like a huge issue of getting a qb and wr’s is that we rarely throw the ball down field. People can make excuses and say we don’t have the speed or time to do that. Watching a season of college football, I think that is ridiculous. While not overwhelming, Iowa has competitive speed, but refuses to allow for a wr to make a play. The lack of mid level crossing routes always seem to bother me, also, as that is where a lot of good things can happen that allow for YAC. There are only so many receptions one can get going to the sidelines.
The 40 yard throw across the field to the sideline for a gain of 3 yards drives me insane. It has to be one of the hardest throws for a QB to complete

Yet we throw it 10x a game and complete less than half haha

There were flashes of some mid range crossing and curls this year but not consistent. I think it was the ISU game, first possession and Iowa came out and hit Gill multiple times over the middle where the ball traveled further than 8-12 yards. It was like a trip down memory lane of KOK route tree

Then it completely disappeared rest of the game and most of the season.

I swear Kirk has his own playbook and the OCs must use it 80% of the time

KF seems to put more stock in to finding and developing players that fit his mold. Most of the time those aren't transfers unless the situation is perfect for both parties.

I also think we have missed on a few that we could have used more money as well but that has been few and far between.

I think you need another choice:
  • Iowa is the Rosie O’Donnell of wet T-shirt contests
  • Iowa doesn’t have enough NIL funds in the war chest
  • Kirk is happy with the current roster and is only looking to add a few transfers now and spring
  • OP’s mom was unwilling to put out to woo transfers
  • Offensive transfers who could make a difference and make Iowa more competitive are leery of KFs track record of 'conserve'.

This is the answer

So what are you suggesting? That Iowa's slogan of "Punting is winning" might be perceived by offensive skill players in a negative light? Say it ain't so!!

Well, I can say with certainly that Iowa has missed some portal targets very closely. And it's purely about money. The "big people" giving "tens of millions" support schools with rosters that are already elite. The NIL game begins when the backups and buried prospects at those elite programs enter the portal. Iowa is in a fight, NIL wise, to pick up the best scraps. And that's where everyday donations make a big difference.
Haha. If you want to call Nebraska and Indiana rosters “elite” as of last offseason, have at it! But they have huge NIL donors, trouncing Iowa.

I share the angst of a lot of fans.

With that said, I am curious if there is a positive spin to be had. In other words, is Iowa striking out because they’re the fat, ugly stepsister at the ball, or because they feel good about the guys coming up and are being very judicious and selective about whom they reach out to and how they spend their NIL funds (ostensibly to avoid another Proctor debacle)?

I don’t know. But I am curious what others think, or what rumors have circulated. I am of the belief that Kirk will never bring in a kid who isn’t a good fit regardless of talent and also believe Iowa is a tough sell given our offensive reputation and lack of productivity in the passing game. I am also guessing they are probably a little more stingy with NIL funds out of necessity.

Anyway, I look forward to reading responses to the poll and this thread. Thanks.
I do possess some Ferentz-fatigue ... however, I still respect the man. As for angst ... nope ... my only angst concerns how stupid the whole NIL situation is. Thus, my angst/frustration is with the system that is currently in place rather than our program.

As it relates to our program, I think that you need look no further than recognizing that our player retention is excellent among those players who are our starters. Given how rampant tampering appears to be ... I think that is way more commendable than fans here seem to be appreciating/recognizing.

When you observe that we've had guys like Jones, Hurkett, Wetjen, and Dunker returning ... that contributes to the lack of landing guys from the portal ... because we're retaining very productive guys who are already on our roster.

My hesitation to contribute to NIL is a lack of trust in the money spent process. Until I see a better use of player skills in the positions that apparently take more NIL I am sitting on the sidelines.
You mean you haven't been impressed with the crown jewels of our NIL collective - Cade McNamara and Kadyn Proctor?

I don't trust that dude in charge of the NIL fund any farther than I can throw him, and I trust KF, who obviously has a large influence over it, even less.
