Thoughts on Brian Ferentz ?

A lot of up and downs with a young offense. There was a lot of newness this year in coaching too. 1st time OC, New system, new coaches at new positions etc.
OC Ferentz
OL Polasek
WR Copeland
QB O'keefe

A lot of youth and inexperience with players.
Players: Stanley, Jackson, Wirfs, Smith-Marsette, B Smith, Easley

Next year's recruits: Tracey, Evans, Geil, Roberts (WR/DB)

Every year is different but lots to look forward too.

Jury is still out, yesterday he didn't do anything that innovative, debbie just quit playing in the second half and even wadley was running over defenders. He showed signs of an attacking scheme but then he also showed signs of greg davis. I think we have a really good Qb in Stanley but we desperately need to get some receivers who can separate and get open.

Been taking a wait and see approach.

Not thrilled with his use of Wadley. I like his route schemes a lot better than with Davis.

Year two will tell me a lot more.

Yeah there is plenty for the backers and the detractors to point to this year. On the positive side, I find it a minor miracle that the Iowa passing game was as competent as it turned out to be this year after losing a 3rd round pick as a QB, the draft pick TE and having the two senior tackles not play together all year. Last year, Iowa's passing game averaged a pathetic 6.4 yards per attempt and the draft-pick QB threw for 17 TD's and 10 Int. With a new QB, the only experienced pass-catcher coming off two foot fractures, the tackle issues, Stanley averaged 7 yards per attempt, with 25 TD's and 6 Int. The games against Iowa State, Ohio State and Nebraska were tremendous performances, Iowa State especially. Down 10 on the road against a good opponent in the 4th quarter, come back to win.

There was also the games against Michigan State, Purdue and and Northwestern. Those things happened. Just be willing to throw the "plan" out if the way the opponent is playing is just daring you to attack them through the air. If that doesn't work either, so be it. Year 2 will tell more. Wadley is a big loss, as is Welsh. Everyone else of significance on offense is back. Add another player or two into the mix on the outside and there's reason to be somewhat optimistic.

So far more to like than not. Reality is Iowa had a major transition year. As noted above, new QB with no real game experience. Injuries changed an experienced offensive line into an inexperienced line. The poor line execution, and it was among the worst performing offensive lines since 2001 probably had more to do with little AWs underperformance and the usually poor rushing numbers than play calling.

Obviously rebuilding the receiving group this season hindered execution. The lack of a true X receiver hurts the entire passing game. Easley would be much more effective if someone was drawing D backs a little farther down the field. Next season the three freshmen receivers will be a season more experienced and bigger, stronger and faster. Will they be sufficiently good to create a down field threat and, if so, how will they be used are the big questions for next season.

Iowa threw more in the red zone and more on first down than in the last several seasons. With eight starters returning, including the QB (always important) its going to be an interesting season next year. AW will be hard to replace but the Meerkat and Welsh will not. Barring major injuries the offense should be much better next season. There may be a coaching problem if not.

Had several great offensive games, and several horrible ones. Yes you can point to execution, but consistent lack of it falls on the coaches. It seems like we left a few wins on the field, but we usually do. That is why KF is historically a 7-5 type of coach. In most years our offense is average to poor. Will Brian be the one to break this mold? Too early to tell. He definitely needs to show improvement next year.

They need to lock him up and make him the head coach in waiting.

Wow! This is beyond absurd. He didn't deserve to be promoted to OC, hence the lack of vetting against any other candidates. If his last name was different his resume alone wouldn't have even gotten him an interview. Now you want to shackle the program to another ferentz for an additional 20 - 25 years.

Brilliant

Next year sets up very well for him to show what he's got. We'll return an offensive line with some experience, a mixed bag of talent at skill positions and a veteran QB that flashed brilliance and fixable problems.

I like it because it's a unit that needs development but isn't hopeless and will have some strengths that he can leverage. He will deserve lots of credit if it goes well and won't be allotted many excuses if it goes poorly.

This would help accelerate the learning process (and I know it’s a pipe dream): If Josh McDaniel stays with the Pats, It would benefit BF and the entire O staff for a 3 day sabbatical from his former employer, the Patriots.

This would include: scheme, game planning, strategy, utilizing player strengths, and play calling. For extra credit, I would add instruction on how not to play down to lesser opponents.

For those of you who maintain it’s Kirk’s team, he can go too!

Minnesota hung 54 on lil Debbie, so I wouldn't put much thought into our game against them. After all they gave up 50 points in three straight games.
This, I honestly thought Iowa might struggle, haha, not so much. That Nebraska team is the worst I’ve seen in my lifetime. But I have to admit, it’s been beautiful watching them fall so far down.

The entire coaching staff needs to be replaced. Right after they fire Barta. Can't really say much about Brian because the offense has been doggy doo doo for the majority of KF's tenure. And we've had 3 different OCs now. I have to assume it's a KF problem and as long as KF is the head coach, the problem will continue. Brian Ferentz or the Ghost of Bill Walsh at the controls.

He did some things I really liked, he did some things I didn't understand. Overall, the offensive performance was unacceptable this year though. I expect to see improvement next year.
