Time for a Spark. Start Dasonte Bowen.

5-7 (71%) FGs

2-2 (100%) FTs

12 points

16 minutes
I agree. Still think Ulis should play meaningful minutes but Bowen has such a high ceiling and brings a level of creativity we have to have.

Duke was clearly the better team, but we have to make free throws and open 3's. Also some of the bunnies by Rebraca, Ulis and Saucy were killers.

Kris had a tough night, didnt force things too much. I wish we could have got him going in 2nd half.

I think he's gonna force Fran's hand

we shall see Thursday night
Ulis is pretty much out there for defense. If he gives you 5ppg that’s going to be good for him. Bowen is a slasher, good distributor and seems to be a decent defender. Another thing to look at, who would you rather lose in the portal, ulis or bowen? With the way things are now, almost have to take that into consideration unfortunately

Good point on the dreaded transfer portal.

At the end of the last game, Dasonte did not look happy (he didn't play much). Someone else said they noticed it as well.

It would be a kick in the nuts to lose a talent like him; Fran spent over 2 years recruiting him.

Bowen looks like the best PG Fran has ever brought in at Iowa. Go with the guy with upside. There will still be enough minutes for Ulis. If Bowen's name were McCaffery, FRan would find him more minutes.
It's not about Ulis, its about Connor, Patrick and Sandfort if he can't hit anything.

Ulis and Perkins need to keep playing the same amount of minutes they're playing or more.

Iowa needs more speed and ballhandling on the floor.

Bowen should be getting more minutes, no doubt, whether he starts or doesn't start. Still plenty for Ulis. As others have also noted, the lineup should have 2/3 of Bowen/Perkins/Ulis on the floor the vast majority of the game. Sandfort takes minutes at the 3 when his shot is falling, or Patrick is struggling or needs a break. He is not a guard at this level.

Honestly I think out of those 3 guys Pat is the one that should see a dip in minutes. Sandfort will shoot himself out of this slump. And we’ve absolutely got to have his shooting. Connor has been shooting it extremely well so far and when he’s doing that he’s valuable with his versatility. Wouldn’t mind seeing a lineup of bowen, ulis, perk, kris and rebraca at times. And dix seems like he should be seeing the floor more often as well.
I commented in the game thread last night, what exactly did Fran do early in the 2nd half when Duke was scoring at will and we had no flow and the lead was stretching? Nothing! No timeout and maybe like 1 substitution. He should be burning 1 or 2 timeouts there, bringing 2-3 new guys in and trying some different lineups to see if something clicks. His in game coaching is pretty questionable a lot of the time IMO

Bowen does have the upside. Kind of at the point of the season where Iowa needs to find out what it has there. He can do things on the court that others can't. There will be mistakes, but kind of have to live with that now.

He is rushing his shot big time.
I don't know that he's rushing. He shot quickly last year, and wasn't afraid to shoot when coming off the bench.

My guesses as to why he's struggling so bad:

Injury - he could be hurt/dealing with something that doesn't keep him from playing but is impacting how he plays. Perkins was non-existent until later in the year when we found out he'd been dealing with a shoulder injury and finally felt better.
Mental - just not handling well the greater role. It is different being a bigger part of the scouting report. The slump is so pronounced now that he's not even close on wide open shots. Looks to have zero confidence that the shot is going in. Crazy as it sounds, only way to get out of it is to see a couple of them in a row go in. But the rest of his game (defense) is really suffering too. He appears to be in his own head at this point.

Sandfort is going to be a big piece of this team if they’re going to be any good. Him and Kris are the only true shooters on the team. Sandfort when playing well, adds a lot of value. He isn’t a bad defender and gets quite a few rebounds by tracking the ball and being in good position. You’re right, he’s in his own head and just needs to see a few go in. Ill also add, ive played with a few guys that are excellent shooters and if given a bunch of time to shoot they’re actually worse than a quick catch and release. I believe he is so used to that quick release that it may throw him off if he has a bunch of time to set up.
IMO, Fran needs to be running some action to free him up and try to get him some buckets.

Agree, Patricks defense was so pathetic last night it was shocking even for him. Zero resistance.

I love what Connor has been doing, he never hurts you. His defense on Philipowski was great. He does a bunch if little things that help you win.

The problem is the little things don't matter if you don't have guys doing the big things like getting to the rim and hitting 3s.

Right now I'm torn because Connor is doing really good little stuff but how do they get Bowen, Perkins, Patrick and Sandfort on track when there's only so many minutes because the one thing Connor doesn't do often is score and the others can.

Ulis doesn't score either but he does get in the lane which is almost as important.

I really don't know for sure what to do but one thing is obvious Bowen is the most talented guard and he needs to play significantly more minutes and be allowed to learn from his mistakes and not be benched.

I actually think the rest of his game is great. Had a couple nice assists last night.

I wonder if him growing a couple inches has affected his shot? I think he does tend to rush it a bit, he was doing that last year, too. Probably heard too much chatter about his quick release, now it’s in his head.

Start Ahron and Dasonte. Rest Tony more, keep his minutes under 20 until he's doing better.
