Time for Kirk (and Phil) to prove they still got it

Probably their last real chance as a tandem to prove they can do what's listed in their job title and "coach up" their players to compete with an allegedly superior football team, and not get embarrassed on the national stage by an actual top 10 team and not just someone who is ranked at the time and then gets exposed later on like Penn State or Minnesota.

For Kirk, the clock is ticking and this may very well be his last trip to the Shoe with Iowa, so we'll see if he can inspire his team to more huge embarrassing failures as the woe is us little engine that couldn't program simply outmatched by all the elite recruiting and buying of players for a program like Ohio State.............or if he can dig deep into his soft brain tissue and remember how to not only compete but perhaps even dare to upset a top 10 team on the road like they did in 2009 against Penn State.

If not, then he can always lean back on how we won 8-10 games this year against similar competition, which counts for something to someone I guess.

As for Phil, the excuses need to stop. I'll never forget what his unit did just keeping the score to what it ended.up being in 2022, because any other defense gives up 70 in that situation vs Ohio State, including Georgia.

But the fact is, in numerous games against legitimate competition, it isn't just the offense that gets outclassed by the end of the game. Yes, the offense may be garbage from the start, or if we're being honest, before they even get off the bus...................but inevitably Phil's defenses get got/get figured out by these elite teams and it becomes a matter of waiting for the game to get over and hoping the score doesn't get too ridiculous.

So this game is just as much on Phil and his unit making this a 4 qtr game regardless of how little work the offense wants to contribute to the cause.

And if you disagree with these takes, deal with it and enjoy the game today! :D

This has nothing to do with Phil. You can’t have 3 turnovers in a quarter and expect your D to limit scores
I don’t think Phil is a problem, but the turnovers aside, in several games this year the defense has given up big plays that have cost the game or made it closer than it should be. The secondary needs to improve

Didn't read.

They don't got it.

This I agree with. I know walk-ons at safety are neat but how about we get a 4* CB or Safety more than once every 10 years.

Agreed, I have been concerned about Parker leaving with Ferentz but not so much anymore. Iowa needs to clean house iMO.

Actually, Phil (and Norm before him) used to be famous for putting out fires following TOs and limiting the opposition to FGs or no points. The last few years that hasn’t been the case. Our D is constantly giving up TDs after TOs.

i’m going to take flak for this but this season is going to serve as proof that a top 5 D alongside top 125 O (like last 3 years) is better to have than a top 25 D alongside top 75 O. If i have nil spending money i would give it to phil, he needs at least one difference maker on his squad

That's a problem then since everyone besides CDJ and Joe Evans were back. I guess CDJ was that good in a sense that nobody threw to his side of the field.
absolutely cdj won us some games that we lose otherwise
and before that campbell
and before that eppy
this year a bunch of pretty good players but nobody special

Agreed. As much as the D was on the field during games last season I think that unit deserves a pass on some of those though.

The defense does not get a pass. Sure, the offense is a big problem. But the defense gave up 4 touchdowns on 4 straight possessions. Not once did OSU ever consider settling for a FG, because frankly they knew they didn’t have to.

7-0 at half. OSU gets the ball and goes 86 yards coming out in the second half. Sorry, but the defense needs to stop that drive. Iowa forces a punt there and gets the ball back around the fifty. Even if Iowa doesn’t score Kirk gets to play his field position game. It was the Germans rolling through Poland. At least hold them to a FG, make it 10-0.

Next possession, Cade fumbles. Instead of holding them to a FG, 3 plays and it’s 21-0. Again, a FG and it’s only 13-0.

Same with the interception and the second fumble. 2 touchdowns, zero FGs. And never really in doubt.

We’ve heard many times that the defense is the firefighter, coming in to put out the fire and save the house. Well, too many times this year (and the past several years against the top teams) it looks like the firefighter is out of water.

Point is, the offense is holding Iowa back, for certain, but the defense has issues, too.

All of this boils down to one thing - Iowa simply does not have the talent to compete against the top teams. Iowa has some really good, even great, players, just not enough of them.

They need to pr9ve it against a blue blood and that was supposedly the only one this year.

KF needs to step aside.

PP needs to modernize the D slightly, to keep it relevant.

We will still get 9 or 10 wins this year based on the schedule.
Don't count on Washington or Nebraska or, probably, another one or two teams cooperating. As long as Cade is the QB . . . which means as long as he's still able to limp onto the field . . . Iowa's chances are severely limited. Too bad they don't have a good, young, mobile QB they could trot out there . . .

that is a problem with guys coming back for 5=6 yrs because of the nil money---seems like most times they are not as hungry as they were before---our D should be a lot better than we are with all of the upperclassmen and games they have played but for some reason it just seems off.
Same with the O line--they have a ton of starts back and while improved a little, still do not get basic pass blocking schemes and still get pushed back into the QB time and again-

I would have preferred a few of these guys left after last year and get some young blood some reps.

Great offenses score touchdowns against excellent defenses. Vandy just put up 40 on Bama. You see it every single week all over the country. People forget that Iowa turned OSU over 2 times in the first half and Iowa still scored zero points.

The problem with Iowa is still that the offense wasn't and isn't capable of scoring ANY points against a great defense. Until that is fixed, Iowa could have the number one defense in the country every year and still get blown out by every good team they face.

Agree. However, Iowa gave up a 14 play 86 yd drive for an fOSU TD to open the game and then a 12 play 83 yd for a fOSU TD to open the 2nd half. The defense was great in the 1st half with 2 TO's, and should have probably had a 3rd if Fisher sticks his hand out. With that said, it would have been nice to see one or both of those drives stopped or held to a FG.

I get the whole bend don't break philosophy, but you have to be perfect if you play it, especially when Iowa offense is (still) so predictable and relatively easy to stop. When you play a team that is uber-talented like fOSU, that is no easy task. It works well vs teams like Minny, but even then there is no guarantee you can get off the field.

I like Phil, and I get the "Parker" plan/scheme, but when things don't go perfectly, you get yesterday. Hell, fOSU ran the same play twice in a row where QB missed a streaking JSMith down the side line uncovered because he passed short. They called the same play the next down and hit Smith for the 50 yarder. To me that is PP scheme in a nutshell.

TXHChawk Dewhawk Evil Monkey. How many wins are you guys predicting? Or are you saying we will get 9 or 10 wins but it's not because of the easy schedule?
Schedule isn’t that easy. MSU has lost to two of the Top 4 teams and a good Boston College team. They will be a challenge. Wisconsin’s offense is improving quickly and Nebraska will be tough. This easy schedule talk is nonsense.

No idea but given Iowa's history 7 to 9 wins because remaining games could go either way IMO. Probably get a second-tier bowl offer that nobody really cares about unless someone wants to go to warmer weather area for a few days. JMO
