TJ Otzelberger new ISU coach

ISU cans one losing coach and then hires another. Nice!
He is 1-0 against Iowa. Remember Iowa losing to the Jackrabbits? Supposedly a great recruiter, got Fred his talent. Can he coach, we will have to see. He was JP's pick 5 year ago, until President Leath stepped in.

Am I missing something? He seems to be a fine coach. He won conference titles 2/3 years with SDSU.

That being said, he has won zero ncaa games in 5 years as a head coach. Doesn't jump off the page but not atrocious. Shouldn't inspire fear in our fan base but, objectively, I don't see how he is a terrible hire.

He was hired at UNLV to turn that program around and was an abject failure. Folks in the know in Las Vegas thought he was a bad hire for them an he proved them right.

His 2 seasons were less than stellar at UNLV. I mentioned this in another thread. He was at SDSU for 3 years and those just so happened to coincide with Mike Daum's sophomore-senior year. Daum for those unfamiliar was the 10th player ever to score over 3,000 pts in his career. Pretty nice player to inherit. Like Prohm getting Niang for a year and the junior class with the likes of Monte Morris for 2 years. As for the claims for him being a good recruiter isn't that the same label Prohm had? Question is how good of a coach he is. Because the writer of article linked by OP seems to think he did a sub par job implementing his system with the roster he had at UNLV that had decent talent for their conference. Lastly unlike his SDSU job or Prohm when he landed the ISU gig he is not inheriting a strong and talented roster. He is walking into a situation more like Fran did when he came to Iowa.

ISU seems to only want guys that recruit transfers and just roll the ball out for practice.

don’t dare mention defense or offensive sets. We don’t want to upset the talent. Fill Hilton and emotion will get you some nice wins. Sucks on the road and in NCAA tournament.

honestly the most predictable and worthless hire I can imagine.

I hear ya but he also accomplished those titles with the Daum-inator.

He did a total tear down at UNLV so it’s too early to say whether he could’ve turned them around.

It’s a pretty damn risky hire but recruiting is half the game in college hoops and he can do that.

CAN he actually do that or did he just recruit well for Hoiberg? That system seemed to be just the right one at the right time. NBA style of play and an early adopter of grad transfer and undergrad castoffs to plug the holes or stack more talent on top of the ISU 4-year recruits. I fully realize many good/great players were originally ISU commits, but transfers made that program work at the level it did.

Remains to be seen. Hasn’t been at his other two schools long enough to establish a reputation on his own.

Who did he recruit to Ames?

On a scale of 1-10, this looks like a "4".

Absolutely underwhelming hire.

So, Prohm was so bad that a change had to be made, but they couldn't afford someone decent?

This is so Jamie Pollard. Kinda proves that the Campbell hire was a fluke.
Just visited CF, lots of posters are less than impressed.

Was just happy the didn't nab DeVries
Kind of what I was thinking as well. Obviously all coaching hires are a bit of a crap shoot but I felt like Devries proved more in what he’s been able to do at Drake. As mentioned above, TJ’s results at SDSU and UNLV aren’t really anything to write home about. For all I know he could well turn out fine at ISU but he hasn’t done anything extraordinary so far considering what he walked into at the two places he’s been.

The Drake donors say DeVries is staying until Tucker graduates. Could be PR but it could be loyalty or a long term career plan. Hope he stays. Be cool if Drake games were more of an event around town.

And I know he has this reputation as ‘good recruiter’...but remember he was a McDermott hire and hold over onto Fred’s new staff. I don’t recall all those dynamic recruits during Greg’s years.

Maybe Fred should get more credit?

Fred was pretty savvy. Sitting in the T'Wolves front office he saw what was going on with NCAA bball. The loosened transfer rules were just the opportunity he needed...and knew how to leverage.

He reached out to the only place who would hire him as HC with no experience...and they did. He worked the system to build his resume. Then when the time was right...he did what he ultimately wanted to do, become a HC in the NBA. Make no mistake...he used ISU bigtime..played them for exactly what he needed. Sure they got some good seasons out of it...but he was there to get where HE wanted to go.

Clone fans don't understand that it's not happening again.

Multiple NBA first round picks. That's pretty dynamic.
