TJ Otzelberger new ISU coach

I swear you have some of the most interesting and head scratching opinions
While i college, I watched two of the best in person ofter,,,,Lou Henson at NMSt...and Ralph Miller at Iowa....What impressed me the most is how much "coaching" the assistants did. Head coaches are absent from practices quite a bit, so the assistants often run things.
I have a cousin who was Jerry Pimm assistant back in the early 1980s at Utah for two years, he had a lot of head coaching experience at HS and JUCOs....His job was to run day to day practices...He set up the practice schedule and Pimm would sign off on it......another assistant prepared the scouting reports and finalized game plans with the head coach and another assistant was in charge of travel arrangements and helped the other two assistants....Pimm was responsible for the success of the program but because he was absent so much, the head coach had to have key people who rum the day to day of the operation. Pimm was also quite successful at Utah.
Ralph at Iowa would smoke cigarettes, stomp up and down the court, remind players of what he wanted them to do, but Schultz and Van Eeman ran the practices....Ralph too, was absent a lot from practices performing other duties...When ralph went to Oregon state after Iowa, SI ran an article about how much Ralph had "softened" and he would go sit in the stands, smoke his ":Mores" and oversee how the practices are going and occasionally yell at a player or two. .
I think it is pretty standard how a lot of bigger schools run their basketball programs. Like I said, that is how Henson and Miller ran theirs...and they were two of the best.

So, back in the day Applebee's would do that burger name with the coaches.
Now it would be the Franburger vs. the Bergerburger?

For someone who prioritizes beating Iowa, Pollard has sure done a poor job of backing that up lately. If TJO doesn't pan out, ole JP might find his britches a-blazin'.

Am I missing something? He seems to be a fine coach. He won conference titles 2/3 years with SDSU.

That being said, he has won zero ncaa games in 5 years as a head coach. Doesn't jump off the page but not atrocious. Shouldn't inspire fear in our fan base but, objectively, I don't see how he is a terrible hire.

San Diego St has had some really good teams that last few years, no surprise their coach is moving up.

The Drake donors say DeVries is staying until Tucker graduates. Could be PR but it could be loyalty or a long term career plan. Hope he stays. Be cool if Drake games to be more of an event around town.
That’s all done and dandy until a power five school comes a knocking with a $15 to $20 million dollar offer. Means nothing.

Rumor from somebody in the know was Moser said no (I mentioned this a couple weeks ago), DeVries said hell no and Fred and Mussellmen said f no. So they pay 10 mil (great extension Pollard) to get a coach they could have had 5 years ago?’ Hey as long as they are “the bear” he can do no wrong I guess in Ames. I assume all but the biggest Pollard lovers must be besides themselves with this hire.

Does Lames have boosters with money who would have forked over the $10 million that was required to get rid of Prohm ($5.5M, fired without cause) & hire TJ ($4.5M owed to UNLV)?

Yes there will be some money. But Pollard looks horrible. While it appears the deal was done for a couple weeks, Pollard said they would do an extended search and had limited resources but then they hire a guy who sucked in the Mountain West in a day and due to Pollard’s idiocy on Prohm’s extension are getting jammed on buyouts. Absolutely unreal how poorly this was handled especially with who they got to coach “Hilton Magic.”

yeah, if you are going to spend $10,000,000 to move one guy out & move another guy in, it should be a home run hire

$10M was spent by the Clowns

$10M was spent to get rid of Archie at IU

Crazy.

Yeah from what I've seen Fran is pretty involved with daily practices.

He is 1-0 against Iowa. Remember Iowa losing to the Jackrabbits? Supposedly a great recruiter, got Fred his talent. Can he coach, we will have to see. He was JP's pick 5 year ago, until President Leath stepped in.
More importantly, he just went 12-15 in the Mountain West. If you want to pretend you don't just care about Iowa, probably shouldn't only make a decision based off of how he did against Iowa.

I think DeVries is a little different cat. Spent a long long time at Creighton as an assistant. He’s also seen what can be done at a private school in a town like Omaha, which is pretty similar to Des Moines. This is his 3rd year in a row at Drake of winning 20 games. Hasn’t been done in 50 years. He took over a program that had 3 players on the roster, which makes what he has done even more remarkable. Pretty sure an extension is in the works. Probably get him up to close to a million I’ve heard. With what he’s got going he can and will contend every year. Might just make a career of it.

I guess I will wait until it is official until I comment on TJ.

I thought about all the coaches that have come + gone since I started at ISU. Orr, Floyd, Eustachy, Morgan, McDermott, Hoiberg, and Prohm. Only Orr was proven at a P5 program.

The best coaches today are guys most of us have never heard prior to them rising in the coaching ranks.

Whomever Pollard selects, I will support him. I am not a AD and have no idea what is involved in a coaching search. The one thing I do know is that Mark Few is not getting hired. It will be a relative unknown and relatively unproven. Chris Beard at TX Tech was at Arkansas Little Rock before he made his name in Lubbock. Most of those top guys are like that.

The thing that bothers me (on both this board + CF) is that people are already ripping on TJ for a variety of reasons. IF he is hired, give him time. No one thought much of the Eustachy hire in '98, and he lead ISU to an Elite 8. Like all coaches, TJ has forgotten more about basketball than any of us.

Time will tell.

He might be but there are lots who defer..I was always surprised how much Schultz and VanEeman did...and Ralph did not. Those assistants did a lot of the “ one on one” heavy work. Miller was always there to remind the boys that “ bounce passes” were not part of his offense, though....

Now let's not jump to conclusions on how this was all handled....remember JP said that we should not believe anything that does not come directly from him. Let's just wait for Jaimie to tell us how it was handled....I'm sure he will be fair with his assessment of himself.

And he would turn down a 5 year $15 million dollar contract if his kid is still in school. Roflmao. Ok.

take him 30 years to earn that at Drake. And assuming 30 years of success is quite a stretch.
.
Roflmao. Him getting a $15M deal.
