TJ Otzelberger new ISU coach

I guess I will wait until it is official until I comment on TJ.

I thought about all the coaches that have come + gone since I started at ISU. Orr, Floyd, Eustachy, Morgan, McDermott, Hoiberg, and Prohm. Only Orr was proven at a P5 program.

The best coaches today are guys most of us have never heard prior to them rising in the coaching ranks.

Whomever Pollard selects, I will support him. I am not a AD and have no idea what is involved in a coaching search. The one thing I do know is that Mark Few is not getting hired. It will be a relative unknown and relatively unproven. Chris Beard at TX Tech was at Arkansas Little Rock before he made his name in Lubbock. Most of those top guys are like that.

The thing that bothers me (on both this board + CF) is that people are already ripping on TJ for a variety of reasons. IF he is hired, give him time. No one thought much of the Eustachy hire in '98, and he lead ISU to an Elite 8. Like all coaches, TJ has forgotten more about basketball than any of us.

Time will tell.
Agreed. In this particular case it's a lot of buyout dough though, so that's a factor, especially when schools plead poverty publicly (that nobody should buy).

I guess it's the way of the world these days relative to "Amateur" sports though. Its a big business, clearly.

There now seems to be rumors that this might fall through with this TJ guy. Could Pollard have floated rumors to see the reaction, similar to Moos at Nebby floating the idea of getting out of the Oklahoma game?

Cause at face value, this would be a VERY underwhelming hire. And as others have stated... doesn't an employment opening at a State institution have to be advertised for two weeks?

Maybe JP reads this board and forgot about posting job for two weeks. Now they are back pedaling.

Have not heard it directly from Jaime, so not convinced this is the hire.

Back on March 8th fans were hoping for his departure on unlv msg board and the next hire......

we can only imagine. Imagine when awfulburger leaves,

This is resembling the typical cluster%$@# that occurs when ISU/Pollard does a coaching search. That athletic dept might be well run, but it comes off as something right out of the Keystone Cops. Even his Steve Deace like basement announcement about "doing it the right way" looked amateurish.

I guess these things happen when you're changing coaches as often as ISU does.

The guy who made out like a bandit on this deal is Prohm. They give him 5.5. mill AND he gets to leave Ames! Banco!

Just so he can fill a couple of big jugs with that wonderful water on his way out of town.
It's Pollard. Of course he got fleeced!

And he would turn down a 5 year $15 million dollar contract if his kid is still in school. Roflmao. Ok.

take him 30 years to earn that at Drake. And assuming 30 years of success is quite a stretch.

All of that assuming that kind of money is coming his way. Coaching 5-6 seasons at a mid major and then moving up is sort of typical career path for head coaches. Alford as 4 years at Mo St., Lick was six years at Butler and Fran was many years in the mid majors.

One thing is certain, every March there are a lot of job openings. That will be as true when Tucker graduates from college as it is right now.

How much has Pollard had to shell out (total) for his coaching misses? Sounds like this one will be in the 9-10 mil range, Rhoads was around 4 or 5 mil I think.

Some big $ being tossed around by a school that barely has enough scholarship sports to stay in the Power 5.

Its the coaching carousel I mention every time a dullard wants to fire Ferentz. How many schools are constantly rebuilding, coach gets 5 years, doesn't win enough, start over with new coach with old coaches players, 5 or 6 years latter fired, etc...

Campbell is waiting until the perfect job opens, I think and then it will be on to greener pastures, the kind of green that's in the middle of bank in Beverly Hills. Personally, I think he's waiting for Harbaugh's propaganda machine to fail and expose Harbaugh for what he really is, an OK coach.

Take Matt Campbell for example. I think Matt is waiting until the perfect job opens, and then it will be on to greener pastures, the kind of green that's in the middle of bank in Beverly Hills. My "Cyclone" buddy and former sports writer called hiring TJ a "lazy" hire.

Being able to recruit is a must ... but coaching night in and night out against some of the best basketball minds in the sport ... and playing in a major conference and competing night in and night out against top competition is no easy task ... Guy was barely .500 at UNLV ...

Have to agree with my friend/former reporter ... a lazy hire ... With much of the money going to the football program ... and buyouts involved and paying Prohm ...ISU probably limited itself quite a bit for who it could seek ...

Edit: And f* any of these P5 programs who moaned about Covid yet continue to spend incredible amounts of money on firing/hiring/facilities, etc. ... Sadly, many schools will not learn from this (one would think they would)

Yep and they know MC is gone after a home run year. I heard Matt told Pollard raise my salary and give my assistants money (since some won’t be able to travel with him) and reduce my buyout. And that is what happened. Insane. So 1 more year of good football and then it hits the fan. Look at the contract. Wow. Talk about a guy ready to go after a year.

$10M is a helluva lot to simply get rid of one dud & replace him with another dud

Wow talk about living rent free. I make 1 comment on MC and there are pages about it on CF. Some nut (One Power, 29, Moto or Brandon they are all the same idiots) says they have a “friend” link my posts to them so they can post them there. Wow maybe should be scared except considering the sources not really. Rent free. Won’t gloat though as feel bad for people that fall below the poverty line for income and the Mendoza line for IQ.

Youve posted about that site and it’s posters 100s of times on this site. Talk about free rent.

My god. You are the absolute last person on this earth that would know what's going on behind the scenes in Ames.

LFMAO that you actually think you know what Matt & Jamie talk about.

It's a done deal. Pollard just announced it. Man he sounds like a douche.
It looks like Pollard recorded that video the same day as his last video.....he just put on a sweater over his striped shirt. It's also really painful to hear him rationalize hiring a .500 MWC coach...it's almost like Jamie is trying to convince himself that TJ is the best option for the job.

Crybaby douche Jamie pays $10m to get the same coach he could have paid $0 for a few years ago.

Epic fail for the supposedly financial genius.

From a Tavern Hawk.

LOL...you're such an idiot. Aside from how ridiculous that term is, I probably have closer ties to the University of IOWA than most people on this board.

U of I degree, post grad work, I've worked with both University Hospitals and the school of Dentistry in my professional career and I'm a long time season ticket holder and donor.

Suck it...and go away. ISU has always been and always will be....our bitch
