Tom Brands after NCAA Championships

We won 8/9 matches today. Last year on Championship Saturday we won one match. Not saying I am happy with it but the guys wrestled their hearts out today. & for that, I am very proud of them.

You tend to win more when two guys seeded for the finals end up wrestling Saturday morning.

I have been a doubter of Tom the last few years, but I will give him credit, I would say we "peaked" for nats this year. I think it was important for our guys to finish strong and that is what we saw this year.

I hope this is a sign that things are turning around at Iowa. we could have even won nats with a team like this in some years.

So now I hope tom works on filling the holes we always seem to have as well as upgrading talent and I think we will be challenging psu soon. (I hope)

There's no way we peaked. Two who made the finals last year didn't this year. One who AAd last year didn't this year. Kemerer finished below seed. Yeah, Sammy finished better but was pinned 2/3 last matches. You can't have that abysmal of a Friday and legitimately say we peaked.

It's crazy to think but I don't think we're too far off. Everyone is saying PSU wins with ease. Hall and Joseph are beatable and gives me more confidence for our guys. We'll be young and unpredictable. New leaders will emerge and for the first time in awhile there's momentum behind the program. That should concern those at the top. It's like the Yankees...everybody loves to hate them but when positivity and momentum start to roll...watch out.

Who tosses Terry next?

25 Laux/Wagner
33 Happel (he'll make the drop)
41 Turk
49 Sorenson
57 Kemerer
65 Marinelli
74 Young
84 Cash
97 Holloway
HWT Stoll

You're not making much of an argument if your points are literally (i) BS lost to the same guy as last year (the prohibitive Hodge favorite btw) just in the semis instead, and (ii) a freshman wrestled below his seed by placing 3rd instead of 2nd. I mean, get real. Aside from a single bad sequence by Kem in his QF, those 2 wrestled well.

Because barring injury or off the mat stupidity, they will. They won with ease this year, get everyone back and are still throwing in another title favorite, and someone better at 133.

I don't disagree with the betting odds Pump...I'm just saying they aren't unbeatable. I think Kemerer gets closer to Nolf, I think Marinelli will be able to go with Joseph - IMar is still there to beat Joseph. I believe Valencia can beat Hall. I believe Bo Nickel still has to face Myles Martin who he struggles against. Zain, well he's Zain, enough said, BUT Brandon can get second! A healthy line up next year we have AA potential from 41-HWT. If Happel can make 33 like Gross did I think that's huge for the Hawks too. Like I mentioned before, first time in a long time we have momentum.

And don't get me started about 2018-2019 when Lee, Teasdale and Warner are in the line up. My head might explode;)

I'm a little concerned for Terry when Sammy throws him, he could break a rib.

And I think as LAX pointed out, Kemerer actually scored more points going for third then had he gone on to the finals because of how much bonus he had. Not sure but he rolled right through to include bonusing a guy that he had been close with all year.

Why you don't have that headlock guy on ignore is beyond me.

97 points. Gotta start somewhere, so let's start there and move forward with Kemerer, Marinelli, Lee and the new era of blue chippers. Not happy with 4th, but we can only control the points we score, and 97 is back in the realm of where we've wanted and needed to be. We're going to need 125+ to be competitive in this new era, maybe (eek) 150. But that's life. Accept it, make a plan, and move forward.

exactly tarp, i'm sure no one in the room is going to stop trying to get better.

The argument concerns peaking. That means the team overall being better at nationals than at any other point. Sorensen went from nearly beating Zain to getting dominated and pinned. Three of our top ranked Guys were pinned on Friday, and our top gun went down for the first time. We had one finalist. That's not peaking.

Penn State won 3 matches in the finals and even a couple in the semi finals that could have easily gone the other direction. I don't see 150 becoming a common occurrence at all. I do think the top 4 teams are well positioned to all score over 100 points year in and year out.

I'd say that's the results of not cutting as hard. It's a long tourney so the more he can eat instead of dropping weight the better.

We could realistically have 9 AA's next year. Half of those probably low AAs if they get there but also 2 guys should be in finals. 100 points isn't out of range.

I think if Holloway isnt wrestling guys 40-50 lbs heavier he has a decent shot at a low AA. If he can make it to 197(Im not sure he can) he should be competitive.

The Clark story/championship is fantastic. Couldn't be happier for the kid. Pure heart.

On a separate note, Tom is not getting the job done. Penn State is the new Iowa in college wrestling, and that's sad. I never thought I'd see another program dominate like the Hawks did for 20+ years .... but Cael is on his way to accomplishing that. We need to stop that train, and I'm not sure if Brands is the guy to do it.

I dont think some of you guys realize how razor thin the line between making the finals and totally missing the stand is completely at this tournament. I think its no question these guys peaked.

If you look at it strictly from a seed perspective you arent giving guys much wiggle room. Look at a guy like Kemerer. Seeded #2, but havent seen anything out of him or the rest of the country for that matter that shows he can be Nolf. So basically there is only 1 way he can meet expectations. Same with Gilman, it was first or failure for him in some peoples eyes.

Where I saw guys peaking was Gilman taking it to Nicky Pic the 2nd and 3rd times around, same with Dance since I believe thats the worst hes ever beaten him by.

Clark beats Micic again when that match was basically a coin flip last time and he also reverses the NaTo match.

Carton maybe didnt have a ton of evidence that showed he peaked, but I think thats the best hes looked in the last month or so.

Sorensen handles a guy in Micah Jordan twice that beat him two weeks ago.

Kemerer gets caught by Palacio or who knows what happens there, but HE BONUSED EVERY GUY HE BEAT except JoJo

Gunther winning two matches is more than i ever could say i expected

Alex Meyer beats a guy hes not supposed to and only loses to two guys hes supposed to and nearly gets BoJo

Brooks beats MyMar again. His loss to Nickal is hardly anything to be disappointed in.

I could write a book about how Cash peaked, but I wouldnt be telling you guys anything you didnt already know.

So how is this not peaking? The Brands boys got all they could out of these guys this weekend with the talent they had in the room. Throw an healthy Sam Stoll in there and they take out Oky State. It's just been a talent issue these last few years which is everyones problem minus Penn State, but that talent is coming guys.
