Tom Brands Media Day Presser Transcript

The part where Tom talks about negative recruiting, and referring to a "portfolio of gold" and a "folder" about 2 inches thick from Lee's father regarding the negative stuff against Iowa by 3 "you know who's" is a bombshell to me.

Brands admits he kind of didn't care about all the external noise, but now he does.

It's always been obvious on themat forum. There are a handful of dedicated PSU trolls, who regularly post anti-Iowa any and everything. They go after coaches, wrestlers, the school, and the fans. Perpetuating stereotypes, blowing up minor incidents, posting video captures to mislead, digging up any kind of minor brush with the law, and keeping it talked about. Metcalf's mental health, McD's headgear, Ramos behavior, Slaton's shoplifting incident, Gilman's behavior, St J's behavior....you name it... all fodder for these jackals. It seems more about flaming than any kind of give and take wrestling discussion.

So now, it appears some coaches/recruiters have sunk to that level. There must be some real garbage being hurled our way by opposing coaches, for Brands to come out and say what he did. Cael wasn't specifically named, but it wouldn't surprise me, given the whole "f**n" schtick he seems to have everyone there

It's mind blowing to me that the concept of negative recruiting in division one sports is news to people on this board. It even boggles my mind more that your head coach thanks it's worthy of an excuse in a press conference. You would be hard pressed to find another Coach in any division one sport actually bring this up in a press conference . You can keep your blinders on as much as you want as Penn state Ohio state and now Oklahoma state is passing you by but if you think this is some new revelation and all of a sudden everything is going to turn around its not. I can't believe the once proud Iowa fan base is now relegated to saying everyone is cheating and negative recruiting us . Who cares if other coaches are saying Brands is a Martian, Figure out a way to overcome it and succeed just like you need to do on the mat . I can't believe the fanbase is OK with excuses ...

It means, other programs are saying things like,

"being in the iowa room for 2 years is like being in a wrestling room for 10"

"you'll end up living in a van under a bridge after graduation"

"Tom and Terry will make you hate wrestling"

"You'll be completely worn out by nationals, they don't know how to peak"

"there is no fun there"

All the things we've heard, but Tom and Terry haven't necessarily. Tom said it himself, he always worried about the program, didn't negatively recruit, and never addressed the quotes that we've all heard. While refreshing to hear that he doesn't have rabbit ears, it's been kicking us in the rear for the past decade. So, it sounds like, when recruiting, Tom and Morningstar, et al, are making a beeline to those concerns. Like Tarp said, we're all tired of the blah, blah, blah. Let's get the job done. But we can't do it without horses.
Cael putting Spyker on retainer has paid big dividends in the recruiting game. Recruits need some credibility to buy in on the above, and I have it from a very good source he's a very honest guy. Unfortunately, it looks like Cael has banned in from social media, so we lose out while PSU recruiting WINS.

Also, I’m sorry but the biggest threats to PSU right now are tOSU and OSU. I know that hurts but it’s true. Ironically because they too are whipping Iowa in the recruiting battle.
I think you need to revisit what irony means. If they are "bigger" threats than Iowa now, then they should be winning the recruiting battle. That isnt irony. Sorry.

As soon as Spencer committed to Iowa, Bael started contacting DeSanto immediately to coach him how to beat Spencer at State. Even though he knew DeSanto was going elsewhere for college he had enough vengeance to negatively go after Spencer. Good guy over there in State College.

Did Cael arrange for an injury to the ACL and the Mono? I know DeSanto wanted to go someplace close to home for college but I think he is going to give the 125's a lot of trouble at NCAAs...I think a lot of coaches are going be wishing they had recruited him.

Not sure it would have mattered regarding his recruitment. The family has somewhat unique needs that Drexel could satisfy. Not many others could. I hope he's successful and fulfills his dreams.

DeSanto is at 33 ... still going to be tough.

Do you guys really think that the team of orthopedics he will be consulting aren't well aware of the available data and associated risks for making a return at various times? I get a kick out of people citing one doctor's opinion, based on one study...etc. I'll trust whatever decision Lee and his counsel make. They're far more knowledgeable of his specific situation than anyone on this board.

I would agree. And yet probably the same team has treated Stoll and Snyder and sent them out to participate and both have retorn their ACLs. The ACL graft and tunnels may be well healed in 6-9 months, but you also need all the supporting muscles, etc. to stabilize the knee and limit the stress on the ACL graft. Medicine and surgery is far from an exact science and erring on the safe side in a situation like this may a good idea in a guy with such a bright future. IMO of course.

IIRC Stoll tore the other ACL. He did not re-tear the same one. (Is re-tear even a word?)

I was under the impression Lee's surgery and initial rehab was by the Patriots doctor. Also, you can't compare ACL recovery between a heavyweight and a guy that weighs around 130. He could come back and get hurt again. Or he could redshirt and get hurt next year. He and his family are very intelligent. They will weigh the +/- and make the decision.

Lee’s doctors commented at the time of his initial diagnosis at how incredibly well-developed his surrounding musculature was.....to the point that they even had difficulty verifying the ACL was torn at first. And this was the Steelers team doc, a respected expert on the knee ligaments. Put that together with Lee’s personality and you’re looking at an Adrian Peterson, Todd Gurley-type rehab schedule. I can completely believe that this kid is back to stability and strength in the joint. This is not your run-of-the-mill college athlete. This is Wrestling Jesus.

FREE THE LEE.

What was the problem with McD’s headgear? I never heard that one.

Or those incidents were not related to the prior injury or rehab. Correlation=\=causation.

You agree about trusting them then imply it shouldn’t be trusted. I think we all know it’s not exact.
