Tonight was the formula.

Kris is averaging 17.6 min/game...unless he is in foul trouble, he should get more minutes in my opinion..and maybe he will going forward, but Fran has been pretty consistent in not bringing him into the game until 6-8 minute mark of the half, so that limits Kris PT....it is pretty clear when Kris and Keegan are both playing together the defense and offense both get betterv vs Rebraca at post.

To Frans credit I think he's been trying to get Kris more minutes than Rebraca recently but the last few games Kris has committed some dumb fouls and gotten some terrible calls against him too.

It seems like Dickenson was guarding Bohannon out on the arc by design.... or were those switches and it just played out that way on all those possessions?

In fairness, foul trouble is a big part of why he’s averaging 17.6 minutes. He needs to reach just a little bit less and he’ll be cooking with gas.

I haven't heard this before. 🤔

Bohannon is no dribble wizzard but he was kind of toying with him with his dribble jukes out there.
Yeah, the 3pt line allows you to really isolate a big if you have 4 other guys the defense won't leave to double off of.

Iowa has that.

It was a beautiful thing wasn't it? It is the JBo effect of him playing the 1 and something that doesn't show up on the Stat sheet. It sure opens the paint doesn't it?

Yeah its partly bad reaches on his part like when he slapped the NE player in the face after a rebound.

That shit is completely avoidable.

The other part is reffs making an abnormal amount of touch fouls against him.

Keegan has pretty much figured out how not to waste his fouls, Kris is getting there.

Switches. 5 man is primary high screener.

Another reason why true bigs are going extinct.

The can't defend out there.
Yes the only chance Iowa had against Dickinson and Michigan is to make it extremely painful for him to defend. And they did. Exploited him several times for 3's when he got switched on to Bohannon. And the Murray bros. took it at him and made him guard.

When both Murrays can play a lot of combined minutes and not be in foul trouble, Iowa's offense is a thing of beauty. They put so much stress on the defense.

Its the combined effect of having 5 guys that can shoot on the floor.

It's why Connor hitting shots has changed the game.

Before, Connors defender could leave him and double the ball allowing Dickinson to get home. Now they can't.

I wanted to see Iowa play this way all year but I'm glad they are heading twoards the potential of what this team could be.

And what makes me excited is that Dickinson is a better perimeter defender than Koffi.

Koffi can't play in space without fouling.

Let's make him play in space.

With the way Iowa moves and screens for each other, they’re going to get a lot of cross matches with guys like Dickinson against Murray or one of our guards. Pretty much no way to avoid it with a slow center if you’re Michigan.

Most important win of the year, because Iowa finally did what they needed to do against an elite center. Key is to show they can do it twice in a row starting Sunday.

Kris has been a victim of a lot of TV timeouts too. Somebody needs to chart that stuff. There is no way you can convince me that refs are looking for a way to create a deadball when the clock hits 16, 12, 8 and 4 rather than let it play out. Think about it, you never see a TV timeout any further than 30 seconds from those marks. And beyond that, you never see a team commit 20, 15 or even 12 fouls in a half either. It always seems like it evens out for the most part around 7-9 fouls unless someone has to foul. Not that it is rigged, but the refs are not just refs but game managers as well.

I've never thought about that but its an interesting point.

It sure seems that Kris gets called for one or two fouls a game for stuff that happens on every play all game long.

Yes at 2.5 fouls in 17.6 min, that is on high side. Part of the problem is he gets a bad whistle because he is considered a bench player/unknown and refs tend to call more fouls on those guys and refs tend to give
benefit of doubt to stars. Last year Keegan had similar issues with foul trouble as an unknown coming in off the bench.

Fran has to manage Kris fouls, but there have been plenty of games with Kris having 2 fouls for a game and only 12 min of PT. Kris vs Michian got 27 minutes...that is about the max he can get because I don't think he came into the game until 6 min mark of each half.

My theory is with more PT, Kris will learn when to not go for a block/steal and pickup cheap fouls + he will get similar respect from the refs if he gets more minutes and shows himself to be a star and get a friendlier whistle.

27 minutes is great.

If he can be out there for that long every game Iowa is tough to beat.

Definitely. Connor's shooting has big time.
I think there’s an argument that Connor’s recent shooting binge is the most important development for this team in since mid-season. He does a ton of things well - leadership, toughness, solid rebounder, great passer, so him even being a threat to score makes him a really valuable piece to this team and opens up the offense for everyone else. I was really noticing tonight that Michigan never let Connor float free and he was just content to not shoot for the most part. I liked the one he took - he missed, but he had just enough space to reinforce that he’s a threat.

If Kris can reach just a little less on D and JoeT can slow down even 3% there’s still more ceiling for these guys.

Compare tonight to the first Illinois game.

Its like a different team.

No one was guarding Connor, Koffi was playing a 1 man zone and we couldn't get any rebounds.

Making the 5 get out of the paint now allows Iowa to attack the offensive glass effectively too.

Yeah it really is the thing to watch Sunday. If Iowa can make it painful for the Illini to defend, Hawks have a chance. We already know Iowa has no real answer for Kofi, that is a given. And no one in the league other than maybe Purdue does. He is just too big and too good to really be slowed down.

This was a great win by the Hawks. Should definitely remove any chance of being stuck on the 8/9 line In the tournament.

Kofi, IMHO, of course, is one of the most overrated players I've seen in a long time of watching college basketball. He's not particularly athletic. His shooting range extends to, maybe, five feet. He can't guard on the perimeter. His only attribute is, as the TV announcers say over and over with awe in their voices, his "brute strength" after he dips his shoulder and knocks a defender halfway across the lane and then drops in a lay-up. But the thing is, "brute strength" is an antithesis to the fundamental nature of basketball. There is no place for it in a sport specifically designed to emphasize quickness and finesse. And yet that's the only "skill" the house on legs known as Kofi has to offer. If he were called for the offensive fouls he repeatedly commits, he'd play 5-10 minutes a game before fouling out. To consider him along with athletes like Keegan as a potential POY is a bad joke. Kofi is big and strong. That's his resume. He'd be a pretty good rugby player, maybe, but basketball? No way.

So I hope Sunday's refs will finally call Kofi for using his brute strength in a game of finesse. And I hope the Hawkeyes can frustrate him and his teammates all night long. Illinois knows how to lose @ home. Nobody better to lose to next than the Hawkeyes.

I think the issue with Kris getting more minutes is you open him up to more potential foul trouble. We basically have 3 post players- the twins and Rebracca. It might be his way of mitigating the chances of one of Kris or Reb having to sit. Just a theory on what the coach thinks.

I've never seen him guarded this closely in his career. Michigan treated him like a lot of teams do gramps bohannon.
They sure did. It is just as many said, before Connor's latest run when he actually made shots unguarded, Iowa was playing 4 on 5 on the Offensive end when he was in the game, which he is quite a lot. At least last night we were playing 5 on 5 and opened up drives into the lane for the Murray's and Perkins.

I'm seeing why Toussaint is getting less and less minutes. When he's in, he's dribbling way too much and forcing shots - stagnants the offense so bad. Move the ball, JT! Flip the court, get the defense on their heels. Catch the ball, make one move, and go - drive or find the cutter.

His minutes have been limited due to fouls recently.

If someones in foul trouble it is what it is. That limits their time.

If not play him as much as you can. Which is what Frans been doing IMO.

You don't want to preemptively limit his minutes in order to prevent his minutes from being limited from fouls.

Yep.

The way to beat Koffi is attacking him on offense off the dribble so that he picks up fouls.

He can't help but bump the ballhandler. He doesn't have any ability to play defense in space. Thats why he's considered a second round pick at best.

I think he slapped that guy on purpose. It WAS Nebraska after all. 🙃
