This should have gone on the epic Grotius thread.Good read. Quote from the article I agree with:
“We probably should’ve had a wrestle-off last year,” Brands said. “Off the record, he probably could’ve beaten Grothus, but I made a mistake there. Actually, put that on the record. I think I made a mistake not having a wrestle-off at 141 last year.”
I'm glad Brands admitted it. I really felt he deserved the shot last year. It might have helped him this year as well. That was one decision that frustrated me.Good read. Quote from the article I agree with:

I respectfully disagree. Since Midlands, Carton regressed. I don't think an additional year would have helped him.
Grothus showed nothing after he came back last year. He was too sucked down and had no strength or quickness. The extra experience would have helped Carton. Even without it he always gave good effort.I respectfully disagree. Since Midlands, Carton regressed. I don't think an additional year would have helped him.
141 has been as poor as any weight overall for several years and Iowa hasn't sniffed the podium since Montell Marion last did it in 2012, and dating back to 2007 (essentially a 10 year window to look at for shits and giggles) we've been flat out awful at that weight outside of Montell, as it relates to the NCAA's.Did he regress or run into higher level competition?
You don't think a year of wrestling varsity would help out someone the next year? Really?
You can't put lipstick on those ugly numbers. Hopefully Turk can stay healthy and be our next Montell.141 has been as poor as any weight overall for several years and Iowa hasn't sniffed the podium since Montell Marion last did it in 2012, and dating back to 2007 (essentially a 10 year window to look at for shits and giggles) we've been flat out awful at that weight outside of Montell, as it relates to the NCAA's.
In Montell, we had a guy that wrestled ABOVE his seed 3 years running at NCAA's. (remember how that used to feel?............) His compadre's at that weight, not so much.
That's some dismal results for a school that has a reputation for placement of lighter weight wrestlers. Unbelievable to be honest.
Here is how this shakes out going back to 2007:
2007 - Alex Tsirtsis - DNP - seeded 6th
2008 - Dan LeClere - DNP - seeded 8th
2009 - Alex Tsirtsis - DNP - seeded 4th
2010 - Montell Marion - 2nd - seeded 6th
2011 - Montell Marion - 4th - seeded 5th
2012 - Montell Marion - 2nd - seeded 3rd
2013 - Mark Ballweg - DNP - seeded 7th
2014 - Josh Dziewa - DNP - unseeded
2015 - Josh Dziewa - DNP - seeded 5th
2016 - Nobody, as in did not qualify a 141 lber. for NCAA's
2017- Topher Carton - DNP - unseeded
So in summary, in 11 years of results, we had 8 seeded wrestlers at 141, 7 different guys, and only placed 3 times, and those 3 placements were the same guy.
This weight is mind-blowing to me how bad Iowa has been at it.
141 is welterweightThis 100%.....for a school know as
"Lightweight U" Make for a head scratcher

Maybe I should have broke it down by State, and if Mom's a Leo and Dad's an Aquarius (I have my head wrapped around it pretty good as is...........)While those results at 141 are rather poor, as always you can't look at things in a vacuum. Who did Iowa recruit at the weight that didn't pan out? Who did Iowa recruit at the weight that ended up higher or lower?

It's really simple, incredibly so.
Your Question: Who did Iowa recruit at the weight that didn't pan out?
The Correct Answer: Everyone not named Montell Marion
as always you can't look at things in a vacuum.
LOL! That's what you came up with for Iowa 141 lbers that we missed out on? Might as well throw in Spencer Lee and Sammy Brooks while you're at it. Off the top of your head you say?Nate Skon
Jake Ballweg
Seth Gross
Nate Moore
Just four people who were expected to be top tier recruits or have had great results but left for whatever reasons. It's not as simple as you claim.
And I am sure there are more that don't come to mind off the top of my head

The numbers are pretty sad. Since Montell, Dziewa is the only recruit that was a significant disappointment to me. He was #12 p4p coming out of HS.
Everyone else since then (Ballweg, Grothus, Carton, Marlin, Turk, Ryan, Gross, Happel) were not elite, blue chip recruits and making them into multi-year AA's would have been a real project. Gross turned into something outstanding, but....the extracurriculars.
To be fair, jury is still out on Happel, as he's just getting started.

It's not like we were trotting your neighbors friend Little Johnny out there as it was. Go ahead and look it up.
I think we're going to be pretty happy with the Happels.
Kids score pts, understand what's going on in IC, great family, dads the man. They'll leave it on the mat.I think we're going to be pretty happy with the Happels.
Think so too...

Hope so. I missed seeing him at bloomington. Thoughts on Laux at 125?
People are writing off next year. If PSU has an injury/upset....I think Laux AA's. Kem, Sorensen, Marinelli, healthy Stoll, Turk.Hope so. I missed seeing him at bloomington. Thoughts on Laux at 125?
Probably our best option...outside shot at an AA
Happel was top 20...nothing to sneeze at.

Intermat had him at 36 Chief.
4. Iowa
Top 100 recruits: No. 3 Alex Marinelli (St. Paris Graham, Ohio), No. 26 Kaleb Young (Punxsatawney, Pa.), No. 36 Carter Happel (Lisbon, Iowa) and No. 83 Jack Wagner (Bettendorf, Iowa)
I'm going to go a little crazy here and predict Sorensen goes at 141 and Happel at 133.

It might take 5 or 6. Wonder what Tonya Harding's up to these days?I think PSU just proved that it'll take more than one injury to derail them. Especially next year.
