Tough man to man from the Hoosiers

I agree Fran should have went to JoeT and Ulis half way into the 2nd half and let Keegan play with fouls. He made the wrong moves.

But, we're half way through the season and Iowa has the second best offense in the country. You cant put up those numbers and also be easy to defend. Its just not possible.

That was the first poor offensive game of the year. Every team has a crap game or two.

CJ was out which is huge, JBO missed 4 or 5 wide open 3s, hawks missed allot of layups especially Pat, Garza got impatient and stopped passing out of triple teams, Fran got wacky with the subs and Indiana played fantastic defense.

Iowa beats Indiana 9 times out of 10.

IU isn't a nightmare matchup for anyone, let alone Iowa.

This was the 1 where everything fell in place for IU.

Hoosier grad here. Frankly I did not give IU much of a chance last night particularly without Brunk and Trey who they needed if TJD and Race got in foul trouble vs Garza (which they did).

There remains great debate among the alumni regarding the packline but it worked well last night particularly with Iowa's long range shooting being off.

We still see Iowa as among the top 3 in the BIG this season with a potential run in the dance if the shooting stays on.

The officiating was as fair as we would expect for a road game, TJD and Race both got called for a couple of play ons but that is life on the road.

Look forward to the next game in front of the sea of cardboard cut outs in Btown.

What some call good D, I call fouling. Pulling, shoving offensive players should be fouls.

The best foul was called on Nunge going for a rebound where the Hooiser literally ducked his shoulder/head into Nunge chest, which is illegal, to prevent him from getting the ball, then calling the foul on Nunge.

The old getting a foul called on you for getting hit foul. Dumb.

Great defense is all about being allowed to be physical, grab, hold, and push without retribution from the referees. That was very apparent watching last nights game. It was Indiana's only hope of pulling off an upset and Iowa didn't adjust to the way the game was being called.
That has always been Iowa's kryptonite, whether it's been against Michigan St., or Wisconsin, or any other team that pushes the defensive envelope to the max with the hope the men in stripes swallow their whistle.
To Iowa's end, yes CJ Fredrick's injury is disturbing. If it's the same injury he experienced last year he may be hampered for the rest of the season. That alone is very disturbing, along with the no show of Ahron Ulis.
As far as Jordan Bohannan performance, there's not much to add, to probably what's already been said, Iowa can't compete against any Big Ten team with a Connor McCaffery who has a pass first mentality and when Jordan is completely off on his 3 point shot and I'll finish this by saying Iowa can't continue to play defense with the hope that the other team misses open shots whether from 3 or not, sometimes you have to close the gap and get your hand up, something that seems very foreign to this team....
This, it's true that the Hoosiers played excellent defense, and it is also true the officials were poor. But while everyone talks about their defense, a big part of the outcome of this game was due to how poor OUR defense was . Indiana is not a team with a lot of offensive firepower, but they got deep in the lane on us constantly and with ease. The main reason they shot so many free throws is they had us out of position and reaching while they were shooting from 5 feet and closer. None or our starting 5 played any defense Thursday night. Offensively, when CJ isn't playing and JBO can't throw it in the ocean, we can't have Weezy getting passive and Connor not being any kind of offensive threat at all. Even Luka , though his stat line was good , was poor offensively in the second half. He had 4 sloppy turnovers , and was slow to find the open man when he was doubled. I don't know if it would have worked, but I wish Fran had gone with Joe T and Ahron Ullis in the guard court when things turned sour. Their quickness may have allowed the Hawks to have better on ball pressure and perhaps they could have kept them out of the lane , Hopefully a scenario like this won't happen again. Go Hawks !

nothing wrong with the defense indy played they were physical . officiating had very little bearing on the game .
Officiating is always critical. If they don't call the shoving and holding then the defensive team has a huge advantage. If they don't call those fouls in the paint then they force the guards to make shots instead of lay ups and foul shooting. JMO

That’s what makes Luka’s stats all the more impressive. He deserves national POY, but I expect it will go to someone else.

I hope you're wrong, but it's games like last night, adding bad losses to our overall record, that some voters justified choosing Toppen over Luka. Garza is by far the leader for NPOY now, but if we fade down the stretch, there are plenty of voters looking for others to pass him.

Officiating is never critical. Win the game by enough that officiating doesn't matter. The players and coaches are always in control of their own destiny
thanks . been saying that for quite a while . missed free throws , bunnies , turnovers , poor defense , poor coaching decisions have a much bigger bearing on a game than officiating . now that i have said that out of the wood work will come the posters saying i always take the side of the officials and that i have posted they are never wrong . never said that . i see more than a few bad calls , i just think the other things i mentioned have a much bigger bearing than perceived bad calls .

I do think a Indiana played really good half court defense last night. I also did not have any real issues with the officiating. There were some questionable and inconsistent calls, but I have unfortunately come to expect that.

Where I thought the officials could have done a better job was warning Indiana to leave the ball alone after a made basket. That is why Fran went ballistic. Indiana players were catching the ball to slow down Iowa’s counterattack and force Iowa into a half court game. This played into Indiana’s hands with Iowa not able to make their outside shots. Iowa’s offense is predicated on attacking the defense before they are set and keeping the defense on their heels. This did not happen last night and was not all on the officials, but that did not help.

Indiana is a nightmare match up for Iowa and this type of team will pose a significant challenge come NCAA tourney time. On one hand I haven't seen Indiana play that level of D all year. On the other, Iowa's guards are very easy to defend with even moderate ball pressure. Connor and Jbo are not quick enough to get past anybody and they knew it so they got up into them.

IMO Fran should have looked to Joe T, Perkins, and Ulis in some combination in the second half during the prolonged scoring drought. Murray was the only guy (when he was in) that was capable of driving. Compare this to IU with multiple dribble, drive, kick / score threats and it was just a bad match up.

It's one game but IU showed that Iowa is Garza and 3-point shooting and without both clicking is a very easy team to defend.

The key for other teams is that they have to have five athletic defenders on the floor at the same time, but especially perimeter athleticism. IU definitely a bad matchup on that level, but that was also absolutely incredible defensive intensity for 40 minutes and that will be tough for most teams to maintain.

thats bullshit. You’re an official so I’d expect nothing less. Iowa playing like total crap still doesn’t give a pass on officials. Hand checking is illegal contact and gives the defensive player an advantage, but I’m sure you disagree.

lol , no i agree hand checking is illegal but we will disagree on what hand checking is . the simple act of touching someone is not considered a hand check and i am pretty sure that is what you want called .lol

Good video on Indiana's defense vs Iowa ... they are incorporating the Pack Line defense (or trying to).

Iowa passed up decent shots on every one of those possessions only to settle for tough shots.

Not having CJ hurt the spacing and made it harder to throw over the fronting defender.

Luka has to do a better job moving the smaller defender where he wants him. Hes usually allot better at it.

Theres no way Indiana should be able to deny him the ball.

Hopefully our team watches film because I also see us passing up shots and driving lanes only to take some far worse one later in the clock. The first time Keegan touches the ball in that video, he is immediately open for 3, then he doesn't lob it to Garza who has completely sealed off his tiny defender. Then I see Joe W slam the brakes with his man caught in traffic. Yes, a guy is sitting in the paint, but he coulda had a short running jumper with no contest. Puzzling stuff.

Iowa passes up a lot of open shots. Fredrick and Wieskamp do it all the time with the head fake. Pull the trigger. The worst thing that will happen is you miss and have Garza battling on the glass
