Seems they’ve really zeroed in on Harvey. Two questions: why did he leave ND and what other schools are interested?
How can you say Fran doesn't live in denial when we have seen 3 years of Bohannon at PG? Nothing but respect for Bohannon. The kid gets 150% out of his talent but Fran has grossly underutilized one of the best shooters in the big ten by not getting him off the ball. Year 1 ok. Year 2 puzzling. Year 3 with a Connor add that actually made it easier for defenses to smother Bohannon because he is 0 threat to drive or shoot and I think it is very rational to say Fran lives in denial over what his guys can and can't do. The addition of a graduate transfer after last season was an absolute necessity given that Fran, better than anyone, knew what Connor could and could not do.
I am transparent about how I feel about Fran. Decent coach, does some nice stuff offensively, but doesn't know how to build a complimentary roster and defense is completely lost on him. How many shot creators does Iowa have? How many dribble drive threats does Iowa have? Who is a shot blocker or remotely close to a defensive stopper? You need at least 2 of 3 of these elements if you want to play up tempo.
It's not hard to emulate what others are doing by grabbing a graduate transfer when it makes sense. I would take 1 year of a guy who can upgrade the product on the floor vs. 3-4 years of guys who never get better and transfer. I guess that is just my emotion getting the best of me. No offense taken and none intended with my response. We just see this differently.
Make that 3 high level transfers.Fran is incapable of admitting his rosters have gaps. If the NCAA tournament didn't open eyes in this forum to the value these kids can bring then I don't know what it will take. Per usual Fran will probably throw his name in the hat for kids with multiple better offers and forego the kids he could have a chance with. Watch how fast Hoiberg flips the NE roster.
I find it interesting that a guy can articulate so well....reasoning, but clearly not use logic, yet chooses to continue to spin. You take some minor legit criticisms and turn them into a coach that is "incapable" and in "denial" when the Hawks just won 23 games...had a really good year. Now in fact he is getting a visit of a pretty high profile 2 year transfer.........so the evidence says your assertions are wrong.
Here's the traditional problem with transfers: they've already shown they don't fit in somewhere else. That might be something no more serious than homesickness. Or it could be the kid, can't remember his name, that was a decent point guard but transferred after the general close of recruiting because Lick's style of play was too slow. So I think he went to Arkansas, where he was again starting as he had at Iowa, in a very up tempo offense. So after a year he left Arkansas. I think he ended up on the bench at Georgetown (could be wrong on Georgetown). Now that kid was a malcontent that couldn't get along anywhere. Always gambling on a transfer or JUCO more than a kid you've known for a few years and watched mature from soph to sr in HS.
Not that excited about transfers in general, obviously, but the Notre Dame kid sounds like a perfect fit for the graduating class structure. Next year Jobu, Isaiah and Joey W are going to play most of the minutes outside. Jordan and Isaiah are graduating and Joey W could be gone to the NBA. That's three guys that have pretty much started every game of their careers-a huge hole for Iowa to fill all at once. Like the idea of having a guy with two years experience in big league ball waiting to fill one of those holes.

This post makes more sense if it was created 5+ years ago. Talk to me when Fran lands aforementioned kid/s. You understand how this works I assume. Kids want to take visits to get swag and put stuff on Twitter. Look at how many offers these kids + how many visits they will take. Good job to Fran for identifying some talented prospects but sealing the deal moves the needle not visits. Kids visit, evaluate and decide. They are not picking Iowa. Why is that?
Second point. Iowa was a 10 seed meaning likely 1 loss from being last 4 in or in the NIT due to another late season collapse. The second half of the TN game is a nice story but they did not compete in the first half. Call it a great comeback or TN taking the foot off the gas up 25 or a combination of both...who knows? If you want to base next year on the second half comeback against TN that is certainly your prerogative.
You could be right. How many times have you seen Patrick play in person? Must be a lot for you to pronounce him unfit to play next year. I bet you have NEVER seen him play in person. Personally I think Garza and Kreiner are two of the most physical players in the big ten. Not sure where you are coming from on the Iowa has trouble with physical teams argument. Do you watch the games?Iowa could use a backup to Weiskamp next year at a minimum. PMac will not be a P5 quality player next year when the Hawks play real teams that play physically. Iowa's current players have trouble hanging with physical athletic teams and they won't have Cook next season.

The best thing about this news is that the “Fran doesn’t explore all avenues” myth has been exploded. Hate him or love him his passion for the kids and winning the right way doesn’t deserve the abuse he regularly receives here.
Hate on his style of play, his substitution patterns, the offers he does or doesn’t give, his game day coaching decisions if you must, but I don’t see anything that should ever lead us to question his effort and the desire he puts forth to get the job done. (His kids don’t deserve the grief they get because of their last name either.)
I think if we can land one of these offers we are well positioned for the future. Kids know Fran will never throw them under the bus and they will get the opportunity to prove their worth on the court. If we were to somehow grab two we’ll be looking at the best Hawkeye team in years.

Amazing the NCAA has the balls to punish programs for violations when they let this stuff slide. Perhaps the NCAA is the one the FBI should investigate for being complicit by turning a blind eye?I agree with your post...this IS the issue in college basketball...programs that do the right thing get thrown under the bus by their own.

I would love to hear you tell maishe dailey, ahmad, wagner, jarod uthoff, etc that they are shallow.Yet it remains a fact that all transfers have failed to get along somewhere, turned their backs on kids that very will might have been drawn to the school by kid that transferred and all of their other teammates. They have all shown a willingness to break their word.
Those facts are universally true of every transfer, other than coaching changes when I think the kids that came for coach A should be unconditionally released to sign anywhere and not red shirt. If the foregoing is true you already have someone that is fairly shallow. Those are all undesirable character traits.
The massive increase in transfers speaks poorly of our larger society.
This is the oversimplified, negative view of transfers, and it definitely has some truth. It just isn't that simple, and often transferring is a win-win for the player and the school. Sometimes, the kid just isn't fitting into the team, and his personal goals aren't matching up with the coaches' plans...Yet it remains a fact that all transfers have failed to get along somewhere, turned their backs on kids that very will might have been drawn to the school by kid that transferred and all of their other teammates. They have all shown a willingness to break their word.

Tennessee? You miss the point again....NO one is perfect...no coach is perfect...there are negatives to all of them and positives for most. SO, you have to look at the totality of the circumstances...see the big picture. I see both positives and negatives for Fran and it is obvious (supported by numbers and facts) that the positives outweigh the negatives.
Your point about "swag" borders on ridiculous....your reasoning that the high profile transfer would visit Iowa is for the Iowa clothes he can get? Of all the schools, Iowa is the school this kid (not from Iowa) has picked the Hawks to visit...yep
