Look I believe that eventually Iowa will once again make the sweet sixteen and beyond. I enjoy watching the Hawkeyes in the tournament year in and year out. This coaching staff has provided that. The portal has been in full swing only a few years but Fran has been less than aggressive filling voids. Looks like this year it will change.

The portal. This is the way. This is the new reality. Will the Dukes and Kentuckys use it instead of getting all those diaper dandie one and dones. They appear the victims of their own success at that game. KSU coaching has to be stellar to get all those players to come together and play as a team.

You think maybe having 2 boys getting 25% of the minutes had anything to do with it? Even if he wanted to bring guys in you know opposing coaches were letting players know there weren't many minutes available.

Why should Iowa fans that don't agree with you have to find another team as you suggest?

You happen to believe 4 straight NCAA appearances when 50% of the B1G teams are making NCAA tourney each year is all that is needed to float your boat. Others would prefer better NCAA tourney performance and don't value just making the tourney as much as you do. That is a personal preference.

Yep. Fans or coaches don't have to like the portal and NIL, but it's the reality of today's landscape. Gotta adapt and stay with the times, or you'll be left behind.

I think Fran has always been super loyal to players that he's brought in, but with players leaving unexpectedly over the past few seasons, and those players not showing loyalty back, he's going to have to adapt and i think he will this portal season. Fran really has no choice but to adapt as the roster is as bare as i can remember him having.

You have to admit that if you are bargaining with players who are also listening to schools with a lot of NIL money to throw around and you don't have any, you're fighting with one hand behind your back. I'll be interested in seeing how McCaffery does now that he's contesting on a somewhat even playing field. Bottom line though, we're still Iowa, a school that doesn't resonate well with a lot of recruits. And our lack of National success doesn't help our cause.

The only thing I would amend to this is the thought that Fran hasn't been aggressive at trying to recruit the portal. Last year I would classify Fran as being very aggressive at trying to land a big man and he just struck out--he was involved with some of the highest priority big men transfers in the country. A lot of that had to do with how little NIL resources were available last spring.
2 years ago, Fran was again aggressive in finding a big man and landed Rebraca.
2020, they brought in Evelyn.

Fran also really hasn't needed a complete overhaul since the portal began in 2019. He's used it to fill gaps in the roster, while keeping core players in tact. Kansas State retained 1 starter from their 2022 team last offseason (Nowell)--it's a hell of a lot easier to recruit portal players when they see there are unlimited minutes available. This offseason I'd imagine the gap of Kris and Filip leaving makes the opening a lot more attractive to a starting caliber 5 than it did even a year ago when Filip was returning.

I didn't like it at first, but I might actually like the idea of the portal as it marinates. For programs like Iowa where you're usually left grasping at the "hope for next year" mental state, the portal adds a bit to that hope.
