How can anyone think the tragic story of the death of Jack Trice is inspirational for the Iowa State football program? Randy Peterson's article in today's Register states that Jack Trice, an ISU player was brutalized in a 1923 game against the Minnesota golden rodents. Peterson says that immediately after the game, Mr. Trice was "too hurt to have surgery" and that he was put on a train, apparently from Minneapolis to Ames. Two days later, the young man died from his injuries. TWO DAYS? He should have had access to health care in Minneapolis immediately after the game. Or better, his coaches should have protected him from the racist thugs he faced on that football field. But he suffered for two days in Ames before he passed away. Why was he not given the health care he so urgently needed? That is on the ISU coaches first, but also on the entire university. A story of which ISU should be profoundly ashamed. Name the field after Jack Trice? They should make the Trice family the richest family in the state where they live.
