True PG Away

ummm, gi
Ummm, he's had an entire season of practices to develop, and I think the coaching staff is quite capable of accurately assessing his readiness to play, given that they run those practices.
ummm, given the loss of Nunge, they had a chance to play him, but didn’t...
and ummm, he had 2 defensive possessions vs Kofi and he had 1 point on 2 shots...
that is effective play

Got a hunch our punching bag Jbo has an outstanding NCAA tournament.

Afraid of the moment...he is not. I wonder how many games into next year it takes when we can’t ice the game at the line, before the ‘wish we had Jbo’ posts start.

Iowa’s problem today wasn’t Bohannon, it was turnovers, not having an answer for Cockburn defensively and the lack of scoring in the second half from Wieskamp and Fredrick. Fredrick specifically is too good a player to finish the game with five shots

But lack of open shots for the shooters is something a pg helps with in theory.

Iowa had virtually no open looks all game from 3.

I agree JBO isn't the problem, no one is "the problem" but there is a missing element with the starters, the ability to shift the defense with penetration.

What if I told you our PG was the Iowa career leader in assists and 3FG?

I would say that he's done a lot for his limitations and that he is really a shooting guard being forced to play out of position.

I agree with the OP that we are a true point guard away from elite. I had hoped that would be Joe T this year but he's just been too inconsistent.

JBo running off screens instead of bringing the ball up would be even more dangerous.

I am not pinning it on JBo, but our inability to consistently dribble drive and create opportunities was clearly a problem today. If we had more athleticism, overall, it might not be as glaring. But because we are fairly average athletically, and have a lot more in the skill territory, our lack of a quick, penetrating point guard is magnified.

Dosunmu and Curbelo were the only Illinois guards who did anything today (expected from Dosunmu). Iowa’s guards played well enough defensively against them to win. It was Kofi’s 26 on efficient shooting that was the killer, and Bohannon dropped 20 points

Those points were facilitated by their guards though.

Luka would have allot more easy baskets on rolls if he played with Dosunmu.

Agree on most points, but Illinois had 6 really bad possessions in a row, 4-5 turnovers, when they were up double digits. Had they scored on half those possessions it may have ended up a 20 point loss.

Or if they would have hit any of the open corner 3s against the zone.

So next year you are going to jump to “ just a big man away”. We are not Gonzaga or Baylor and never will be

Joe T. averaged 17 minutes a game last year, and by the time the season ended he was hitting 3's at a decent rate. He needed solid minutes this year to improve his game, but instead has been given a short leash, and has regressed. These last few games he has spelled JBO, in both halves of games, and has played good minutes with JBO, and Patrick as well. And more importantly the team has finished games strong.
I don't mind losing to Illinois. They are a good team, and so are we. We can beat anyone in the country. But you can't find your role on a team, and improve your game without solid minutes.

For everyone being overly critical take a step back and realize teams like Illinois, Michigan, Gonzaga and even Ohio St are as good of teams that you're going to see every year in the NCAA. The fact Iowa Basketball can hang right now says a lot about the team this year.

That said this team is a quality PG away from a very special season. Illinois bosts 3 guards with NBA type skillsets. It killed us today. Killed us against Michigan and has given us trouble against teams like Indiana where good quality guards can give us fits. The tournament is going to be filled with teams with quality backcourts. Teams like Illinois, Michigan and Gonzaga that have quality athletic guards and a center that can take Garza on solo will be Iowa's bane. I really wish Iowa had an athletic PG that could compete with the Illinois, Michigan and Gonzaga type guards. It really leaves Iowa just a notch below and could leave this team one of Iowa's greatest without any hardware.
You can go and cry in your soup now.
Wake up to what really exists in life and you may just quit whining.

Seriously? Have you watched Curbelo play? He's a freshman, top fifty player out of high school. He will play in the NBA.
The post I quoted and responded to is "Illinois bosts 3 guards with NBA type skillsets. "
They do not.

And no, Curbelo might get a tryout but no way does he play in the NBA.

Aaron Ulis is 18-19 or so from the line this year across multiple games while buried on the bench. That ain't luck at that rate and that many games. There's the next "closer" candidate.

Also appears Sandfort is a great free throw shooter, so we'll see how he does too perhaps.

Most of those points were basic entry passes where Cockburn had already established position under the hoop and he was able to go up with it and either get fouled or get an easy lay-in. It’s tough to blame Garza with how many minutes he’s logging, but he got worked today

Pretty tough to say this as he’s only a freshman. The only glaring hole in his game right now is a three point shot

Allot of his baskets were on screen and roll. Especially early.

I don't consider that a basic entry.

That was maybe three or four buckets until Iowa went to zone. Personally, I would attribute those more to Luka’s lack of lateral quickness than to great guard play. On at least a few of those, there wasn’t a defender within three feet of him

3 out of his first 5 baskets were really nice plays made by their guards.

1 was terrible defense from JBO who was supposed to help and another was just bad effort from luka.

Curbelo is a player that Iowa fans better hope he becomes full of himself sooner the later....if he stays at Illinois for 4 years, watch out he will be a thorn in every Big Ten teams a$$.
He is that good, but I suspect that he will be back next year and then leave, and yes the NBA will call his name when he decides to hang up his college sneakers, and anyone that thinks he won't be an NBA players needs to take their blinders off.
