Ultimately, minting these coins is just an accounting gimmick authorized in the constitution. So it could be done. In theory.
Doing so would doubtless tend to devalue the dollar. But on the plus side, if the deficit and debt are reduced in the process, we'll be paying less and less interest on the debt. And we'll also be paying down on the debt with devalued dollars, so we'll actually be paying less.
It would be a huge move and it's highly unlikely to happen. But, as I said, if anybody's going to do it, it's probably Trump.
