Tuesdays With Torbee - What Happens After a Whiteout Wipeout?

This is the greatest mystery to me.

My only hypothesis is they still think they can coach/teach the o-line to not suck - but frankly, seems like a losing proposition. Better to try and scheme around their deficiencies.

Nothing mysterious about it. Everyone knows Brian is in over his head and Kirk is unwilling to do anything substantial to start to fix it.

That is an impossible hypothesis to back up.
Are you suggesting Lachey, Kaleb, Patterson might have made the score closer like 31-3 instead of 31-0? Maybe. I think it would have taken a George Kittle in his NFL form at TE and Shonn Greene to have made a material difference given the OL was horrible and the QB was hobbled and WR's non-effective.

BF offense had Laporta last year and it was still a bottom feeder offense.

I think most fans thought Iowa would not win this game. Perspective. It was how thoroughly they were beaten that is difficult to Accept. Redemption can only come through change. Can they? Will they?

They should be favored in all except v Wisky. If they go 10-2, but have the 115th ranked offense, would you be satisfied?
Hmm, good question.

Satisfied is an interesting adjective in that context.

I would say my expectations had been met - that is after all the prediction I made for the season. Iowa also likely would have won the West division under that scenario, which is a good goal.

I guess it would depend on how the Big 10 Championship game went. If Iowa managed to make it competitive, I would feel like yes, Iowa is finally re-closing the gap between it and the bluebloods. If it was another bloodbath like past Saturday, however, it would feel like the entire season was a bit of tire spinning, so I'd be less than satisfied but probably not angry.

At this point, even 9-3 would not please me if the offense remains mired in the 120s or below. I HAVE to see some continued improvement on that side of the ball to be OK with a 3-loss season.

It doesn’t sound like Iowa is trying to reinvent itself on offense though. Brian said in his 4/20 press conference they were going to do the same stuff but do it better.
That sentence is proof that Torbee is not really worth a read

Are you saying you did think Iowa could turn around a terrible offense in one season?

Or are you saying it is no longer a work in progress?

Does that mean you are satisfied with the offense? Or are you saying the staff should not be working to improve it?

Yeah, I'm not sure how I would feel about 10-2 and off to the BCG vs one of the big 3. I guess it would depend on how that game went and what the offense looks like up to that point. KF said there is no magical fix, they won't change the offense mid season, players have to get better, blah blah blah. Can the players get better, the offense better, not changing the schemes but maybe tweeking them like maybe utilizing the WR's? I guess if that happened I might be satisfied.

3-1 and 8 to go. We'll see what happens.

Your sentiment in that statement is a big part of what's wrong with this country these days. People don't want to read anything that doesn't support their viewpoint. You'd rather live in an echo chamber.

I find it interesting he makes the statement and when I ask him to provide some context and support for his contention, there is no answer.

It’s a fair argument for sure.

But I saw some glimmers in the first three games.

PSU might have the best defense in the country this year, so I need to see a bigger sample size to make a final verdict.
I think what you really saw was crappy offense struggling to move the ball consistently against 3 really bad teams with 2 of the worst defenses in college football. After those 3 games against 3 bad teams, the offense was very close statistically to last year. Everyone WANTED to see improvement so badly that people overlooked the fact that the same exact problems remained. There is a bad offensive line and a passing game that is beyond pathetic. The addition of a few players has had no impact whatsoever and predictably, Saturday looked a whole lot like last year's games against Michigan and OSU, only worse.

Good post. Hawks had two NFL tight ends last year and a all American WR that was smart enough to leave instead of being second string at Iowa.

They have a lot of NFL talent on both sides of the ball. Def on the OL and DLs.

We saw glimmers in the 1st three games. That mirror got broken in the 4th and I actually believe reality is setting in.

Iowa has an easy schedule from here on out. They should be favored in all except v Wisky. If they go 10-2, but have the 115th ranked offense, would you be satisfied?
I’d be torn, happy - yes in the short term. Depression would then set in over the winter months and then Spring Ball and a ‘vastly’ improved <insert WR room or the like> would feel like Groundhog Day….☠️

Well F. Let's quit.
Honestly in a regular season game the last three years against Ohio State, Penn State, or Michigan we are better off playing the second teams. We have no chance against them with this offense. Keep people healthy. Less embarrassing.

I guess where I am at right now is how much is Cade’s injury limiting the playbook and then how do you weigh the cost/ benefit of playing someone else at Qb to possibly give more flexibility to the offense (ie true Qb rollouts, run, etc) It seems obvious Kirk values trusting his Qb not turning the ball over more than anything, Cade has the trust, But at what cost to the overall potential to the offense. Bottom line if Cade is limited in what he can do the offense is limited in what it can do.

Yes, they could improve it. The Head Coach and OC have been in place for 7 seasons.

Wisconsin has a new HC and a new OC running a different style and has a 6.11/YPP and Iowa is almost in last place.

Ferentz said that they were not going to do anything different in the offseason.

Washington averages 9.23 YPP this year, 6.9 YPP in 2022 in the current HC/OC first season
2021 5.0YPP

USC averaged 5.9 YPP in 2021 before Lincoln Riley, 7.2 YPP in 2022 and 9.2 YPP in 2023 so far

I mean, how can you expect improvement from Iowa from one season to the next, just so unrealistic and you continue the narrative. Iowa has shown they don't want to get better on offense and you claim, it is just a work in progress.

Iowa
2023 4.5 YPP
2022 4.2 YPP
2021 4.7 YPP
2020 5.4 YPP
2019 5.5 YPP
2018 5.4 YPP
2017 5.1 YPP

No, I have read Torbee's stuff and that sentence is garbage. My opinion on Iowa's offense is some statement on the country. you are an idiot

Iowa played the same game the first 4 games, just happened to play a much better team and turned the ball over and created no turnovers. Look at the TD drives against W Michigan, most were created by special teams or defense.

There is no creativity on offense and the defense has not forced turnovers. Penn State is a really good team and defense. Improvement should occur the next two games from the Iowa offense
