Two teams from same conference

I seem to recall, when the current playoff system was negotiated, at least one conference was adamant the system allow 2 teams from the same conference to make the playoff.
Given the way things played out last year and the committee has ranked teams thus far this year I suspect we won't see that happen -- unless it expands to 8 teams.

Just because it won't happen doesn't mean it's not allowed. You would have to have two equally regarded teams, probably undefeated and ranked 1 and 2 going into their conference championship, with nobody else undefeated. The loser could still be considered top 4.

I think there would have to be no remotely viable candidates from other conferences for this to occur. That said, isn't ND kind of an ACC team now?

Has anyone asked the committee how they view ND and the ACC? They play 6 ACC games this year. If they finish 5-1 in those games behind 8-0 Clemson who they lost to, shouldn't that be viewed as "not a conference championship"? Not just viewed as neutral on conf championship because they don't play for one, but they should be downgraded just like LSU will be if the SEC plays out as expected.

Like it or not, ND is not IN the ACC for football. Clemson and ND being in the 4 team play-off is a very real
possiblity. The possible re-match is the part I don't care for. What ya' gonna' do?

Lots of things wrong with the current system, starting with the overrepresentation of the BiG and SEC on the selection committee. I'd also limit participation to one per conference, because the conferences have played the entire freaking season to determine which is the best team, so that's been accomplished.

A big improvement would be to expand another week and go to 8 teams. You'd still have fans of the #9 team raising hell, but it would make things a lot simpler. Just go with the champions of the P5 conferences and three at-large teams.

I agree with not having two teams from the same conference in the final four. Like you said, they will have more than likely played each other during the season, and in some cases twice.

That brings up a different scenario. Let's say next year Michigan and Iowa both are undefeated, aside from Michigan beating Iowa in the regular season. Iowa wins the BTT Game. That scenario could allow for two Big Ten teams to make the final four.

I predict there will be 2 teams from the same conference in the CFP at least once under the current system (12-year contract?). Alabama is going to win out, and if 'Ole Miss had done the same instead of flaking out, there clearly would have been two SEC teams this year (still could, I suppose).

I really hope there is never an 8-team playoff, although I'm sure it will happen someday. The best regular season in all of sports would be watered down to NFL level. These games like Alabama-LSU, Stanford-ND, and a lot of conference championship games would mean so much less - instead of being do-or-die situations, they would just be for seeding.

If 8 teams with 5 champs and only 3 at larges and the top four seeds get to host the 1st round, then there is still a lot of importance to regular season. I think the first round would need to happen right after the season, though, and losers would still get a bowl

I think they will have to move to this format at some point. It is just going to be a mess if Clemson, Bama, ND, tOSU/Iowa, Baylor/Ok St win out. How do you tell one of those teams they are out? IMO it would be Bama with the loss to a possible 4-5 loss Ole Miss team at home, but that ain't gonna happen.

If that plays out I think the committee has to say "Clemson already beat ND so having ND in the playoff provides no additional data to determining a NC". If Stanford wins out replace them in the equation instead of ND and our result against northwestern puts Stanford below us. If you're concerned about a 13-0 iowa getting on playoff here are the teams to cheer against: ND, Clemson, Baylor, Okie St. Not saying it's necessary for them all to lose, but it would ease our minds
