Tyler Cook

Fran hit the lottery with Pemsl and Cook. Ryan Kriener will be a fine player as well, I hope he sticks around. Jordan Bohannon is a fine player as well and will be even better as he gets stronger. This is a fantastic Freshman class especially if you include Moss.

This season is going to be a game-to-game grind, with ugly losses and our wins being nail-biters. But I do love this team.

Like both of these posts and it's amazing to me how too many of you posters are one and done game results posters....the game is not that simple nor that easy in this league. Either this or you are just trolling to stir up trouble.

But there is more with Cook...

Cook has only played in 10 games out of 17, 4 of them B1G games with half the minutes of Peter and about 2/3 the PT with the rest of key players. Consistency is what you want but I keep telling posters and tired of saying you need to give some rope here. One of those games, the first one back from his hand injury was against PU with their massive front line and very talented team....oh goody, we get to play them again on Thursday. Risk adjust your criticism or your audit of his play if you have to be critical.

Oh and yes....Tyler had surgery to fix a fracture to his right index finger.....his shooting hand.

Gerry Wright had more than a dunking game. However, after he cut his hand open walking through a glass door at the Van Allen physics building, he lost his jump shot and some ball handling skills.

Interesting that this thread starts after his 4 point performance but not the previous two games (11 points 8 rebs; 14 points 7 rebs).

Yea....isn't that funny how this works CP? It's why I think it's more trolling trying to stir things up on a message board than a common sense approach about how the game of basketball is played and with match ups or some other risks with the game.

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and assume it's an emotional reaction to one bad game rather than trolling.

The vast majority of threads on this forum are comprised of "emotional reactions" after the most recent game. After our win against Iowa State, we were a bubble team. After our loss to Purdue, Fran needed to be fired. After our win against Michigan, all was okay again. After our loss to Nebraska, Fran was a terrible coach again. All the while, posters need to have a couple scapegoats to blame the losses on and have them transfer. It was Brady to begin the year, then Uhl, then Williams (or some combination of the three). Wagner and Cook are potential candidates if they don't improve soon!

And I'm not saying that I'm not reactionary, because I am as much as anybody else. It's just how these forums work.

Cook could become an all-conference player, but he has a lot to learn. Only complaint I have is his occasional lack of hustle, not unlike Pete.

When he learns to play aggressively on both ends and works on getting rebounds he will be a beast. This is not a given and the majority of his needed growth IMO is mental committment not physical.

A lot of talented kids can coast on their physical skills in high school and some take a long time to learn to play with the intensity
required in college.
Agree 100%!

Cook will be just fine. He will continue to improve and I'm excited to see what his game looks like a year from now.

Keep in mind, in addition to being a freshman, he must learn how to play with all his new teammates. This entire team has very little experience playing together.

Didn't Fran say he was the best freshman he has ever had? I trust Fran's ability to evaluate talent.

He just had his worst game of the year yesterday I just expect more rebounding from him he needs to block out the 2nd and third chance points every game is killing us.

But I expect him to be a superstar by the end of his sophomore year the stuff he lacks is teachable.

If Pemsl had the same elevation...
Both guys show flashes of brilliance and they should only get better with time.
I think (right now) Pemsl has the higher court awareness and better ability to play team basketball than Cook. Tyler is more of a raw one-on-one style player who has struggled to adapt to the college "team" setting... Yet is still averaging double digits in points and over 5 rebounds. I'd imagine that his upside is much higher than Pemsl's is, especially if he can start knocking down the mid-range jumper with consistency. It'll take a little time to adapt, but I think we'll see great improvement even from now to the end of the year.

I am sure he is going to be a stud. My post was kind of made tongue in cheek during the game. Not a troll attempt.

While I think Cook is learming about the required intensity and effort levels, I do think you have to cut him some slack in regards to being on the same page as his teammates, due to the injury.

He may be thinking more about where he needs to be on defense and the rest of the group is in the process of trying to get to their spot. When the ball goes up everyone has to have the mindset to blockout and go hard to get it. That part is not a learning curve. It's a want to curve.

Come on man, if you think a guy stinks come out and say it. Your original post called him Gerry Wright 2.0, ability to dunk and that's it. If that's how you feel, own it. Of course, after others point out that since he's come back from injury he had been shooting nearly 60% from the field in 3 Big 10 games and averaging 12 points a game prior to the Rutgers game, that destroys your narrative.

Literally all of the freshmen have had these ups and down, and will continue to do so. Bohannon goes 6-8 against Michigan but his other B10 games he's gone 2-8, 2-10 and 2-5. Moss got a goose egg (0-4) against Purdue but follows it with 13-24 in the next 3 games. Pemsl had a 2-8 outing against Nebraska.

If you've been watching all year and your conclusion is that all Cook can do is dunk, I can't help you. Having his season interrupted by a month of not playing hurt his development, especially on defense. He needs work in areas, but most freshmen do. Athletically, it's all there. The best way to get it to come out is time on the court.

Pemsl and Cook on the same team is a big deal. I think it would be interesting to see them playing the same position because Cook jumps out of the gym and Pemsl makes people look like they don't know how to play defense. Completely different games but both good.
The next three years are going to be fun to watch. I'm enjoying this one and they are all just getting started.

Pemsl and Cook have tremendous upside. A lot of their improvement will be based on their work ethic over the next couple years, not their ability at this point. I think they will be a huge force to be reckoned with by their junior year barring injuries. I think Pemsl could improve his quickness by turning some of his lbs into muscle in the off season.

Yeah ok either way I really don't take it to seriously. You got me you are right. I own it, I feel better. Thanks for that.

Just wanted to let you know DodgerHawki this is a real good post.....well done.

Really happy for Cook. Responded well after a tough game. I like his dunks, but you can see he's learning how to play the game. He's had issues with turnovers, shot selection and defense, but it's all part of the process. When he gets it all figured out he will be awesome. Tonight was a great step forward for Mr. Cook.
