Typical B1G Tournament Under Fran

Indiana was the last team I wanted to see Iowa play in the B1G tournament. Everybody was looking ahead to playing Wisconsin instead of taking one game at a time. Indiana is going to beat Wisconsin on Friday, and they just might play for the title on Sunday.
Wisconsin by a dozen

Indiana is tough.. I don't think this is about Fran as much as Indiana played great and Iowa couldn't match it

What about when Iowa played lower double digit seeds Northwestern, PSU, and Illinois? Maybe it's the setting or the pressure of winning 4 games in 4 days but whatever Fran is doing to prep them and coach them is clearly a massive fail. Worst record in BTT of any team in past 10 years.

jump off the ledge. we played an average 2 half . indiana played WAY above average.

That's great, but why is it that every team we play in our first BTT game happens to have their "A-game," and we look like a deer in the headlights? No matter how you slice, sugar coat or justify it, it is a clear and disturbing pattern.
Coaching in a tournament is different than coaching in a regular season game. You have to be able to motivate your players to go out and fight tooth and nail for the whole 40 mins. You have to be able to recognize and make adjustments during the games. And they have to be effective.
Sometimes your players are busting their butts out there and they are still getting beat, so they look to the coach for answers.

Iowa is the only team in the nation that when they are so close to that breakthrough moment they fall flat on their face. Many other teams play with urgency and do what they need to. Iowa just goes full Iowa. It's not even about this year. They get a pass for youth but facts don't lie and 2-7 is a FACT.

2017: vs Indiana - LOSS - 73-95
2016: vs Illinois - LOSS - 66-68 - Illinois was 14-18 entering
2015: vs Penn State - LOSS - 58-67
2014: vs Northwestern - LOSS - 62-67

All of these were laying eggs.

1. NCAA tournament on the line and we get blown out by Indiana.
2. The others were against very low seeds in the B1G tournament.
All those losses but the Indiana game were against very bad teams.

The 3 consecutive losses before this one..were indeed disappointing..we did not play well..the other teams got after it...ya not good.

today..little different..Indiana is loaded with talent...even with their injuries..they played with a purpose (one was we beat them last time)...they actually played so well...I didnt even notice their coach.

It did not surprise me we lost today...it does surprise me lost all of the 3 previously...(but its history now)..

And I don't think it's just the losses themselves; it's the total no-show in each instance. First three years we played inferior teams that had nothing to play for while we had a lot on the line. This year we lost to a team of similar caliber to us by about 30 points. That is the very definition of a program that has no concept of what it takes to play with the big boys and take it to the next level.

It'd be one thing if we had nothing to play for and the season was over after this game. I could see a team of freshman coming out and just wanting it to be over.

However, the NCAA tournament or potential for it was on the line and we get blown out.

Fran, while at Siena, just for the sake of discussion, took them to 3 consecutive NCAA appearances. They also won 3 consecutive conference AND conference tourneys.

As with us, he took over a disastrous program.

What has changed? Just curious.

I wont argue that Fran hasn't made Iowa respectable. However, there is something with our prep or mentality entering the conference tournament. We have looked bad four years in a row, very bad.

That's a fair statement, but what's different between then and now? Given that Siena's conference is weaker than the BIG, for a coach to accomplish what Fran did there is a pretty good feat.

Our post-season has not been what we hoped for, and I'm curious as to why the conference wins while he was at Siena, have not materialized here.

I thought we'd lose by like 5. Fran is just bad in this tourney & this Ind team was not what a bad conf tourney coach wants to see. This was no doubt the best double digit seed he's lost to.

I read all these reasons for the losses in the BTT like Teddy V, hot shooting, teams playing for revenge, etc, etc. But their one consistent trend about Fran's teams in the BTT, they do not play with same purpose and focus that is needed for tournament. Fran is on his second cycle of his complete recruiting classes and the results continue in the same manner. Fran and staff continue to get the same tournament results year after year so even though the staff never plays a second of any of these games, Fran is the common thread. This board has been all over Ferentz for being stubborn and not making changes, it is time that Fran receives that same scrutiny.

And for those who think that this team will develop and make a deep run in the NCAA tourney in the next couple years, please remember who is running the ship and his tournament record at Iowa.

Just for the record, I am a season ticket holder so I have seen this team go from the Alford to Lickliter to McCaffrey years and I believe we are a better team now than the teams in those previous system (except maybe the team that Alford took to BBT title)

This match-up was bad. So I am giving this seasons BTT a wash. The only team I did not want to see was IU. They are the most athletic and probably one of the best teams in the Big Ten. For whatever reason they lost some games and dropped to 10th. With that talent, I am pretty sure TL would had them in the top 5 in the nation. I don't know what happened, because they can be "ON" and they are dangerous.

Frans record in the BTT is cause for concern, but its not the end of the world. I mean he had won 18+ games in 6 straight seasons. We have been a post-season team for the past 5 seasons. I realize everyone wants a Big Ten Title and a NCAA Championship, but it doesn't happen over night. Fran has the pieces in place to have a solid team moving forward. This was over 50% of our players first tournament experience. They were in the game 52-55 with under 16min TO. So they were there in the 2nd half, but then quick sand happened.

I wouldn't be surprised if you see Iowa next year make a run. They have the pieces and barring any injuries they will be a solid group. Every other team in the Big Ten is losing some key pieces. I realize Iowa is as well (Jok) but he was either feast or famine. I think the team will be better defensively with out him. Now the key is who picks up his scoring. Iowa will be more balanced and I think overall a better offensive team next year.

We were only facing a three point deficit at the end of the first half. I thought, well we're only down three, close game, competitive. Fran will make the proper adjustments and we'll see what happens.

Then comes the second half.

I couldn't believe how the sky turned from bright blue to a dark brown. And, in a hurry. Again, I thought, Fran made adjustments, right? It was a terrible second half, and I couldn't bear to watch any more of the carnage. Indiana poured it on and we couldn't stay with them. What is Crean giving them? 24 Hour Energy pills? Were the proper adjustments made? I think that the fans have legitimate questions regarding the coaching staff. What is going on? The Monkey on our back turned 4 yesterday. Are we going to wish him a happy 5th next year?

So, without profanity, name calling, or recommending punitive action, I simply ask, what changed from the first half of the game to the second half? And, why hasn't the tourney success that Fran had at Siena, happened here?

IMO the fans have every right to look hard at the coaching staff, and ask legitimate questions about where the program goes from here.

Why don't you go or call into the next Hawk Talk and ask Fran that question?

That's a fair statement. It is year 4 without an opening round win. And, contrary to his tournament record at Siena.

It's more than that to me. Had Iowa been in the double bye situation and faced a solid/hot team that was say 5th-7th. I could tolerate it.

However, it's four straight loses against double digit seeds. The three years prior the teams were absolutely terrible. This year, yes Indiana is dangerous and talented. With a potential NCAA tournament bid on the line though? You get blown out?

happens in athletics...those have played them fully understand...if someone could put their finger on it....there would never be upsets...might be a little boring.

I agree that it happens, but four years in a row kind of makes you just a little curious? The opening round losses are something I would hate to extrapolate on.

The main question that I have is that Fran took a failed program at Siena to three consecutive NCAA tournaments and captured three Conference Championships there. He also had four twenty win seasons.

That degree of success has not happened here. I know that the level of talent is greater here in the BIG, but, all things considered, I fail to see improvement in our Conference tourney readiness.

This monkey that has been strapped to our backs had his fourth birthday yesterday. I'd rather not celebrate his fifth birthday next year. Please understand that I am not recommending a coaching change, but rather a discussion on what has happened here as opposed to Siena.

As I have stated earlier, "for the sake of discussion", what has changed between Siena and Iowa?

Please understand that I am not criticizing Fran's overall performance here. He has brought success here. Our program was atrocious when he first took the reins. He had a terrific graduation rate at Siena. That's true here as well. So, he has had success.

I have been supportive of our coach and players all season, and have rarely had anything negative, due to the fact that we have been plagued by injuries at different times to different players, youthful team, and Pete's chronic back issues.

Can anyone see a distinct difference here at Iowa?

Wasn't there a Siena fan that used to post here? Maybe if he still lurks he could provide insight.

I don't think last night was typical for Fran in the BTT of late (last 3 years) because we did not lose to a team we were favored (even heavily) to beat,

Typical of the last three years because the juggernauts that have beat Iowa went on to lose their next game.
