Planet Iowa
I see that after their big win over ISU this past weekend, they flew to Hawaii and lost their opening round game in the tournament to Hawaii, who were 7-1 against a pretty mediocre schedule. I realize that the time difference can play havoc with your internal clock, but I was looking forward to their game against Oklahoma in the second round. Now they get Washington St. instead.

UNI also shot something like 58% against ISU, with a bunch of that coming from distance. They could've beat a lot of teams if they always played like that. However, based on their record, it seems they are a team that can rise to the occasion but can also fall flat. If they finish the MVC schedule with more than 2 losses, they'll likely need to win the tourney to get in.

If it were just the isu game that would be one thing. But, they beat unc which is also a top 10 team.
What other squad in the country has 2 wins over top 10 teams combined with the puzzling number of losses they've had?

I heard some talking head yesterday say that with the great wins UNI already has, all they need to do is finish in the top four of the MVC and they're in the NCAA Tournament. Might qualify for the dumbest comment I've heard all month.

they have no inside game. Live on the outside shot and take a bunch of bad ones. When they are falling they can be a thorn in your side. Trouble is you can't count on shooting lights out every night

I watched their game last night, as I stated in another thread on it. They got brutalized... the NCAA directive on freedom of movement must not have been delivered to the island?

Hawaii really got after them physically and was allowed to do so. I'm fearful it will be what MSU does to us next week.

Well, hopefully it is one thing to allow that kind of play after midnight when few people are watching and another when it is one of the Big Ten openers in prime time. If we see Teddy V at the officials table, we know we are in trouble.

I suspect the physical play combined with the travel -- UNI played the home team who had no problem with the time zone -- was just too much to overcome. Good stateside football teams used to lose @ Hawaii fairly often, largely because of the travel disadvantage, including one of Hayden's teams, I believe.

Hayden won two and lost one to Hawii.

Or maybe Hawaii is a lot better than I gave them credit for. Gave Oklahoma all they wanted tonight.

Wel, you see playing ISU or IA is UNI's bowl game, so......... (having a little fun)

Why anybody would go out to Hawaii and play them is beyond me. Time and time again teams that go out there get hosed by officials as Hawaii can do whatever they want.

Their shots were off all weekend out West. I don't know if it was the time difference or what, but man Jespersen and Bohannon were missing wide open looks. Their big men got exposed to vs Hawaii and BYU.

They have some top wins, but boy some head scratching losses. Going 1-2 out west was probably not what they were looking for, but they will have to take care of business in the Valley. If they lose to a couple of the bottom dwellers in the Valley, could easily erase those wins over ISU & UNC. Have to finish in the top 2 I think to be in the at-large conversation (12-6 record) or better. Anything worse than that, and they are screwed.

Having been over to Hawai'i a couple of weeks ago, I can verify the time screws you up. I actually have an easier time going to Europe or the Middle East. Hawai'i is just enough off to make things weird. It took about 3-4 days to get on schedule. I was waking up with no alarm at 3 in the morning, even when going to bed at 10 at night.

That said, UNI has done exactly what you'd expect from an average team, they are capable of beating top teams and capable of losing to meh teams.

Think they're gonna need to win at least 15 games in the Valley.

In the games I've watched UNI play in they won with great shooting from 3 and lost to teams that shot a great % from 3. Good team fundamentally without great athletes but need better interior play from Koch and Carlson to make tourney. They've shown signs but need to be more consistent.

Hayden was 1 and 1. The team that shellacked Texas in the Freedom bowl that season scored 17 points on the rainbow warriors.

The other victory occurred in the 50's in IC.

Iowa played Hawaii in the opener in 1991 and won 53-10. Iowa is 3-1 all time vs Hawaii
