US sending losers to Olympics LOL

I’ll actively go out of my to not watch them since they purposely left the best player in the world off of the team.

No Caitlin, no ratings from my household.

She is USA women’s basketball! Hell, she IS women’s basketball.
This is where I am at, and everyone I associate with in real life. I am not rooting against team usa, but I will laugh if they lose after leaving Caitlin home. I am certainly not seeking it out, and if it comes on by chance when I am watching the olympics, I will probably change the channel.

Anyone else rooting against the US women’s Olympic basketball team ?

Meh…no, but I don’t care if they lose. Same with the men actually. Be honest with yourselves most of us haven’t watched Olympic basketball in many many years I said 20 a while back but then after someone mentioned 92 and I really thought about it it’s probably closer to 30, the point is an upset by another country, not only would I be happy for them, it might put a little juice back into the meaning of United States basketball in the Olympics. I won’t watch one second of it, the summer is for the Olympic sports as far as I’m concerned.

Swimming, diving, track & field, soccer, women’s gymnastics, etc

I see they call them “break athletes” LOL. Although to be fair, I might try to check that out. I’ve always enjoyed that kind of stuff, the point is there’s just so many great sports that you don’t get to see all that regularly, I like the beach volleyball sometimes watch the indoor volleyball, canoeing kayaking is pretty cool, water polo, etc

Might actually check out the three on three I’ve always thought that was pretty neat

I watched a partial replay of the game. I think one of the better Iowa High School boys teams would have clobbered either team.

This is pretty standard fare… as I said the other day, it’s a different game, women play below the rim men play above it. Any state championship level boys team would win handily against the team of WNBA All-Stars, it’s a given, and not a slight.

Why are you comparing men vs women? Makes no sense.

On a sidenote, you and I are a good example of being careful to judge somebody on too small a snapshot. Our football differences aside it appears to me we view things in a very similar fashion.

And that’s not saying I had judged you per se. I’ve lived long enough to know loose conversations, especially on a message board is a foolish thing to judge a person on.

I wish the WNBA all stars and team USA would have played a three-game series to represent the U.S.A. in this year's Olympics. Win two games, go to Paris.

Absolutely. Even for the men, led by "Lebron the mercenary". He's a great player, no debate to be had, but I'll never give a damn about any title he wins or record he sets in the league. His new way of "team building" is just another example of whats wrong with pro sports today, and is trickling down to the college game. Damn shame....

Why would I root against them?

I won't root against them, but the passive veiled arrogance has been irritating. The WNBA is entering a new phase and the reticence to accept it is understandable.

Caitlin is the catalyst.

The fact she is an ultra-talented rookie celebrity with unpreceded star power challenges the status quo of the league. You can't dismiss she contradicts the stereotypical racial association. Whether or not her whiteness adds to the effect she has had on the WNBA's blossoming popularity, the players regardless of color have benefited. The unfortunate thing for Caitlin is that she has not sought this notoriety.

LeBron has played for 3 teams in 21 years. I’d hardly say that makes him a mercenary. He spent many many years playing with an absolute shit cast of characters playing in Cleveland carrying that team straight out of high school. Now you might not like how he put the team together in Miami (most people don’t) but 3 teams in 21 years does not make him a mercenary.

Can someone explain to me how lebron’s super team he assembled was more hatable than the warriors, Celtics, et al? Was it the show ESPN put together for “the decision”?

I'd concur that the Miami thing is my biggest hangup. To me the great rivalries of Boston vs Knicks, and then the 80's with the Bulls vs Detroit and the Lakers vs the Celtics and others and the how the top players pitting themselves vs other top payers in that era, DrJ, MJ vs the bad boys and Bird and Magic Johnson and Kareem. Those rivalries meant a lot to the sport. It seems now the players spend more time trying to take an easier route and align themselves on the same roster to assure that ring.

My response is more about how teams used to be built before Lebrons Miami team. Teams were built by owners and GM's drafting players or trading for them, not a bunch of stars getting together to align themselves to manipulate a championship. MJ would never have joined the Pistons or the Celtics with Bird, or the Lakers with Magic, and neither would any of those stars. Never would have happened. He wanted those worthy adversaries. He wanted his metal tested in those fires. Winning meant more against them.

I mean I’d agree but none of those teams won without other star players, and in the case of the Bulls, Lakers and Celtics there’s 10-12 hall of famers on there? LeBron spent 8 years with the Cavs with basically no other stars and after his 4-5 years in Miami went back to Cleveland for 4-5 more years. Teams don’t win without stars, and it’s been that way since the 70’s. Which is 50 years.

Uh, you realize that the Lakers plucked Kareem from Milwaukee? Kareem demanded out of Milwaukee and the Laker's were a team he wanted to go to.

In terms of Lebron and Miami, wow do we not have similar sentiments for Shaq joining up with Kobe with the Lakers? Or Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen getting together in Boston?

Don’t forget Jamaal Wilkes on those teams either. That’s two Hall of Fame signings.

Celtics….Robert Parrish…Dennis Johnson…two Hall of Famers added on.

Bulls needed John Paxton and Bill Cartwright for the first three.

Second three added on a Hall of Fame Dennis Rodman…added on Steve Kerr and Ron Harper and Luc Longley.

Detroit added on Mark Aguirre and Adrian Dantley to get to the promised land.

Those teams were just as pure as the Yankees before the draft.

These were traditional trades.

LeBron was a free agent and had spent 8 years in Cleveland. Was he supposed to keep waiting for them to put some decent players around him? Teams were put together differently back in the day. And it's not like the Heat had 5 Hall of Famers. LeBron and D Wade. Bosh was solid but was a Toni Kukoc type of player. Certainly not a Hall of Famer. Very nice 3rd option clearly and an All Star but far from a dominating player. Again, almost every team over the last 40-50 years has had at a minimum 2-3 All stars or Hall of Famers to win a championship.

Celtics just won the title lead by 2 guys they drafted. That makes the title even sweeter.

Celtics improved by 30+ games in Bird’s first year. Won title next year by drafting McHale and trading with the Warriors for Parish. It’s not like the players went to Boston on their own.

And the shrewd pick (and then signing of) Bird by Red Auerbach. Used a loophole that many were not aware of.

My point being that these teams were built by TEAMS through traditional means. Teams signing free agents or drafting players. I'm aware that it took additions for the Bulls. Paxton, Cartwright, Pippen of course and then Armstrong for MJ to win 6 titles. Thats still not Michael getting on the phone with Magic or Larry and saying, hey guys lets all force the owners to put us all on one team, so we can win a few rings.

Great trade. In 1980 the Celtics had two first round picks - #1 and #13. Auerbach favored McHale ever Joe Barry Carroll but didn't want to use the #1 on McHale. Parrish had a high salarly and was becoming an unrestricted free agent next year, so Golden State wanted to get something for him. Celtics traded their #1 and #13 draft picks for Parish and Golden State's #3 first round pick. The Celtics knew they could get McHale at #3 because Carroll was going #1 and Darrell Griffith was going #2.

As it turned out, the Celtic took everyone to the cleaners. Golden State got Carroll (nicknamed "JB" for Just Breathing) and Rickey Brown (played five years in NBA - averaged 4 points a game) and Celtics got two hall of famers and some rings.

I didn’t realize that Bosh was carrying when they talked to the Heat owners. That’s kind of ****ed up.

Some of you have this weird infatuation with three good friends, that happened to be in the same industry, deciding to work together.

So in your world, because they worked in public, they should have forgone the option they had to work together, and just go find a job somewhere they really didn’t want, with people that at that moment in their lives they didn’t want to work with?

If you think that is how it is supposed to work…sorry you made some shitty employment decisions in your life. The rest of us actually seek out work environments where we will be surrounded by friends, confidants, and in a place we want to work.

Thats right up there with the stupidest analogies ever. Like we ALL work with our "friends" in an industry where the "employees" make 40 million dollars a year and their aligning with the same "company" directly influenced the fortunes of 30 other billion dollar businesses. Sure nothing different there from Joe average and his 9-5 job huh? The fact that you would even post that shows just how hard your trying to stretch to defend your position.....
