Uthoff is the best Hawkeye since?

His all around game is outstanding. Defense, boards, blocks, of course a sweet stroke.... Then at one point in the second half when he looks like he is going to be set u for a couple of shots he makes great passes for easy buckets. I can't think of a better all around player at Iowa

I think a case could certainly be made for 96-97 Andre Woolridge . JU has a much better cast around him than Woolridge did, pretty much a group of role players that year and Woolridge carried them to a 2nd place finish.

This is pretty accurate, people forget just how awesome Woolridge was. So many possesions where we couldn't do anything and ended up just giving the ball back to him with 5-10 seconds left on the shot clock and saying "Ok you do something with it" and he would. Led the conference in points and assists, Pitino called him the best pg he coached against all year after the second round loss.

Love how aggressive Uthoff has been though, the guy who wasn't looking for the ball in the second half in Hilton is long gone. He wants the ball, he wants to score and he knows he can. Just another great example of player development under Fran.

Uthoff is a great player but I think Peter Jok could become arguably one of the best to wear an Iowa uniform by the time his career is over. Tough to defend with such a quick release. A nightmare for opposing teams. If Purdue wouldn't have held him most of the game today Iowa wins by 20.

For a one year performance, so far, I would put Uthoff all the way to Ronnie. But I prefer to see how the rest of the season goes.

Please don't make this a Uthoff vs. Jok argument.

My vote is Roy Marble.

Andre Woolridge was amazing and probably the 2nd best player since Marble but as good as Woolridge was, I think Jarrod Uthoff is better than Woolridge was.

So my conclusion is that Jarrod Uthoff is the best Iowa Hawkeye basketball player since Roy Marble.

I agree with Woolridge. Our current team is far better than that 96-97. That team really had to rely on Andre. They had Ryan Bowen and Guy Rucker but not the same depth. This years team can sit Uthoff and still perform at a high level with guys like Baer and Uhl filling in.

JU is a 5th year SR so I wouldn't attribute it to development. It could be that Fran told JU that he's a SR and the best player and to start acting like it.

Sure, it could be the three and a half years worth of work the coaching staff has put into Uthoff or it could have just been Fran saying "hey be the best player on the court". Either one.

Yeah, your original post was worded oddly. To your point, JU has certainly developed, but I think what you are seeing is more of a talking to.

Right now he's an 1st team All American. Not sure in my lifetime(34 years old) that I can say that I've seen a 1st team All American at Iowa. Maybe Woolridge but I don't know.

It should be noted that Woolridge was the first B10 player EVER to lead the conference in both points and assists in a season. I'm still pissed they gave conference player of the year to Bobby Jackson. He was a fine player, no doubt, but that should have been Andre's award.

It's hard to say player wise but Uthoff is definitely an all-time great. I also think Fran is right up there with Bucky O'Connor, Ralph Miller, Lute and Dr. Tom as one of Iowa's all-time best coaches. That Philly article asked him if anyone here called him White Magic and he laughed and said "no" - that has to change.

I watched John Johnson play the 69-70 season. By far the best player to come out of Iowa. He averaged 31.8 pts. per game. In one game he went 16 of 24 shots and scored 38 pts. Three days later he went 20 of 33 shots and scored 49 pts. All this before the 3 pt. line was established. He made 289 buckets in 25 games. He did that in 508 attempts for a 57 per cent clip. He also averaged 10.4 rebounds a game with a high of 23 rebounds in a game against Ohio State. Johnson was also a member of the Iowa team that went 14-0 in the Big 10. He played in the NBA for at least 9 yrs.

On a sad note I believe he passed away in 2015.

If Ute finishes this season like its started then he will have had the best season by a Hawk since Roy Lane Marble's senior year. Acie Earl was a dominating player by his senior year, and the best post defender in Iowa history, at least in the 40 seasons or so I remember Go look at the career top ten stats and the average fan would be stunned where Acie lands.

Imagine Uthoff with Marble's offensive aggression.

It's a tossup between Little Lick and Brody Boyd. :)

I'd say Woolridge for the reasons stated by others that he literally carried that team. Uthoff is a stud but has a much better supporting cast. You can't focus solely on Uthoff or Jok will kill you.

Yes, not even Magic Johnson or Isaiah Thomas did that.

People are forgetting how good Woolridge was.

Uthoff is the first guy that Ive seen since thats comparable. It would be hard to pick between the two because they are such different players that effect the game in different ways.

Uthoff blocks a bunch of shots but AW led the conference in assists.

Specially since I don't think Jackson's season exists in the history books. Should have had a title and a POY that year.

How dare you mention those two in the same sentence. Brody carried us at times.

Uhtoff is going to end up being a top ten pick in NBA this year, Hawks get to Elite 8 or better.
