Uthoff signs with Mavs for rest of season

Good for Jarrod. Next step will be getting some meaningful minutes.
Maybe he will get some minutes once they have been officially eliminated from playoff contention. Uthoff would be better served playing in the D League and logging minutes rather than riding pine on the end of the Mavericks bench.

They're 5 games behind 8th with 9 to go. And would have to pass another team as well. They are essentially eliminated just not mathematically.

Personally, Id rather ride the pine in the NBA and only average a few minutes than spend more time in the D League.

Haha, yeah right. Take a bus around the country or fly coach. Stay in crappy hotel and get 2 star women. OR the alternative

Sounds like a multi-year deal. The terms weren't disclosed. The minimum salary for a player with zero years of service is $543,500. He'll only get a fraction of that this year, but if his contract is guaranteed for next year, he'll be making at least that.

He's played in the D-league all year, he's much better off getting an audition with the Mavs and making some connections in the league. You never know what assistant coach you might impress and where he might end up in a couple of years with a chance to put in a good word for you. Not to mention, he's prorated min NBA deal will be more than he made all year in the D-League.

I'm sure it's basically a summer league deal, so prorated for this year with a non-guarantee option for next year. The team has his rights for next year and this summer but can cut with no money owed to him.

I think uthoff played enough minutes in D League this year that shouldn't matter at this point. Plus now any time to practice and have more time for Mavs to get familiar with him will only help him going in to training camp next fall. Good for Uthoff.

Someone posted he will get about $60k for the rest of the season and saw Carlisle said he was going to try to give him meaningful minutes to see what they have.

Watch out. Tall guys that hit the three and keep up running up and down the court can have pretty long careers coming off somebodies bench.

Obviously, given his limited (so far) minutes, he must be doing something right in practice. And he is much better off practicing against the Mavs, than playing with a bunch of guys who's main goal is to make themselves look good in the D-league so they can make the jump to the pros.

NBA minimum for first year players is $534,471 for full season or $6,628 per game. Take the money over D-league any day! He is not stupid. Salary levels in D-League are tiered $19,500 (B-Level) and $26,000 (A-Level) and the salary cap for each team is only $209,000. He has made more money with the two 10 day contracts than he would make playing in D-League the whole season.

They might as well as play Uthoff. The Mavs are not going to the playoffs. It would seem foolish to bring him up for a couple months and not play him in some real action to see what his potential is for the future...when it does not matter if they play him or not. Unless he explodes and they win out. That could lower their draft position. ;)

Speaking of Dirk—who's watched "The Perfect Shot" documentary about Dirk and his personal coach?

I think that one story where Uthoff paid for a loaf of bread and some deli meats when the coach offered to pay his meals really touch the coach personally so he kept Uthoff on the for year, besides the fact that he's a pretty good player too. Now Uthoff can afford delivery pizzas and chinese with his new salary.

I think you kind of casually brought up something key here. Bench guys don't get to be jerks, not worth the distractions. I'm still thinking Uthoff can carve himself a nice little home somewhere.

He may have found a home. Dirk is getting older quickly. And the Mavs just found themselves another fadeaway jump shot specialist, that is a 4 with a good long ball. ;)

Glad to here of the multi-year contract. I hope it becomes guaranteed soon! Uthoff looks to really have stepped up his game the last couple months. I still say he has a good ceiling as a stretch 4. If Jarrod keeps developing he'll get his guarantee... I like this projection $1.3 Mil can buy a lot of loaves of bread for gas station sandwiches:

Listening to the Carlisle interview it sounded like they were very impressed with his ability to shoot from 3, mid range and block shots. Sound familiar? Bread and butter while at Iowa. He went on to rave about the skill set he brings to the roster and mention they have a chance to lock him up long term this June if they would like. Sidenote: Raving for Rick Carlisle might not sound as you would imagine. It was a very positive interview and his NBA stock is trending very much upwards. Congrats to Jarrod.

Yeah, there was an article I can't remember where I read but it was by a guy who had been on multiple 10 day contracts before finally getting picked up by a team on a long term deal, but he basically said you can't give them any reason to cut you when you're on a ten day deal. That means being nice to every single clubhouse guy, being the first guy in the weight room, and out shooting each day, being the guy going the hardest in each drill, being the first one off the bench for high fives. You're probably not going to get much on court time during games so you have to nail all the little things.
