Uugghhh, can't get past the g damn msu game

First, I'm not saying that MSU or Iowa can't beat Alabama. However, MSU drew Alabama.......hypothetically, if MSU loses to Alabama and Iowa beats Stanford in the Rose Bowl, who has a better taste in their mouth when the season is over? Iowa played a very good game against MSU and should be rightfully proud of their performance. They just got a couple of bad breaks on that last drive and it ended up how it ended up........If someone would have told you prior to the season that the Hawks were going to go 13-1 with a victory in the Rose Bowl, would you have taken it? :) Kirk, the coaches, and the players have done an awesome job this season and should be rightfully proud........

I'm weeks away from caring about a Rose Bowl game. A chance at a National Championship is like a comet for Iowa, and they were one tackle away from it. May never see that happen again in my lifetime, so yeah, I'm going to wallow for a while. Hope the team bounces back, but it's a tall order.

They've finished in the top ten five times in the last 15 years. You'll see it.

Unless you're real old.

The team & coaching staff is jacked up for this opportunity, you should be too!

Tons of opportunity to make plays and win that game. Those small things didn't all go Iowa's way Saturday night. For some reason just watched the game again, was still hard to watch.

Great perspective. I am also having a difficult time getting over the loss, and the seemingly continual replay of the game on BTN isn't helping! I'm just so Fing proud to be a Hawkeye fan. Grew up going to games in the mid-late 70's, so I've seen part of the dark years... 21 straight non-winning seasons, been to so many bowls and road games I can't remember all of them... Amazing wins, excrutiating losses, but that one stung. Yes, let's finish this s#$t at 13-1 and look to another amazing year in 2016... We have so damn much to be proud of as Hawkeyes.

I am with you, once MSU started converting 3rd down after 3rd down I said to myself, they are going to drive down the field and score AND milk the clock. It was just one of those games where the lucky bounces did not go Iowa's way in a sense. How huge was that INT off the back in the end zone? Not sure when I will see something like that again.

It was only the biggest game in program history that we had every opportunity to win. So, yeah, this one might linger for a while. I guess I got really greedy fan-wise:)

I think the team's motto next year will be "FINISH" and fully expect them to kick down the door of the CFP. 2017 may get a little dicey though.

Agreed. It wouldn't have been this hard if we just simply lost, like trailed most of the game, but kept it close. It's how we lost that's the hard pill to swallow.

I'm trying not to think about the small changes that could have made all the difference. Watching those players walk off the field together after the game, there was no doubt in my mind that they were the most crushed by that loss. I've never seen an Iowa team react that way. They played balls out and came up 27 seconds short. It's going to take me awhile to get past it too but I don't understand people who are complaining about it.

Yeah boys it's tough. A game that we had in our pocket. We lost but showed we deserving of our ranking. So proud of the hawks though, they left it all out there and every single player gave 110%. No one including me gave this team a chance before the season but they proved a lot of us wrong and once again made us proud to be a hawk fb fan.

Really pretty simple. We wanted the Hawks to win their way into the CFP and get the B1G championship at some point on that drive. You can talk all you want about pride and S*** like that but don't pretend things are just F****** OK and expect others to do the same.

I'm hearing really REALLY REALLY good stuff about next year. I think we're gonna have another fun one. But this was is a bitch to get over.

Yep. Right now I don't give a rat's ass about the Rose Bowl, which saddens me greatly, because normally it would be something worth rejoicing. Thought for sure if we ever made it there again I wouldn't miss it, but not even considering it this year. I see it as a fabulous consolation prize at this point, but it's still a consolation prize. I have a hard time believing the players don't feel the same way, and though I think we're better than Stanford, I'd be surprised if we won this game. It feels kind of blah at this point.

As stunning as the possibility seemed at the start of the season, I felt this team had the goods to win the whole damn thing by the end of it. Our Offense when healthy and not held back could score regularly on anybody in the country, IMO. Sadly that didn't happen, and here we are left to ponder the what-ifs.........................

Hell of a year. Had the potential to be the best year ever for Iowa Football. There was no mirage, they were a legitimate National Title Contender, which won't come around these parts often, though we will be in the conversation to start the year next year IMO. Top Ten and maybe Top Five to start the season. In C.J. we trust.

A lot of people said, including Kirk I believe, that we were playing with "House Money."

Well, I think we're finding out after-the-fact it's not as easy to say that.

Fact is Iowa earned that trip to the CCG. This opportunity, like citizen said, is like a comet - a very fleeting moment. While I'm optimistic, who knows frankly when Iowa will get back to the CCG? Hopefully soon. Hopefully ...

Good thread. Maybe it's cathartic to release these feelings.

I can't get over it either. I think was the Nat Title game. The 2 best teams in the best conference. This was our toughest game left.

The thing that eats at me is that, during the last few minutes of their drive, I remember repeatedly telling myself that this is not the right end. This is just not how this game should end. It's not fitting, and I still don't think it was... And yet now I can feel myself starting to become more accepting of the outcome, and years from now I know I'm going to look back on this game and just be like, yeah, that's what happened, having reached full acceptance long ago. The thought bugs me. I guess I don't want to be over it yet.

No matter how pis$ed I am about the playcalling or the non-call on Jewell getting tackled by #75 on the last TD run, I think about how pis$ed I would be if I was a player. I really feel bad for the kids that suit up, they probably really felt like $hit.

Let's get that Rose Bowl monkey off our back. Next trip to Indy we'll have been there before...we're taking steps closer. The players now believe.

I'm more pissed we have to wait 10 months for next season, and 3 weeks for next game.

sloehawk nailed it for me ... Friggin' Rose Bowl feels like a consolation prize now.

I dunno, maybe when I see the sun setting on the San Gabriels I will snap out of it. But right now the regular bowl games - outside of the CFP - seem like being in the NIT. I HATE myself for saying that and I know I need to be pimp-slapped. Probably a good half-hour's worth.

It's a weird transition we're in in college football. The Rose may still be the "Grand Daddy of 'em All," but the Great Grand Daddy of 'em All is probably the CFPs now. It's where ya wanna be for sure.

Time to move on and get excited for what we all hope is a Rose Bowl victory. Yes it sucked that Iowa finished with fewer points than Michigan State. It came down to the last 30 seconds and the result could easily have gone the other way. But it didn't because a Michigan State guy made a play. He gets hit and crumbles instead of reaching the ball across the goal line, who knows what happens on 4th down? Maybe they score, maybe they don't.

All the coulda, shoulda, woulda hypotheticals don't change the score, 16-13 it stays. But it also does not change the ride we fans have been on for the past 3 months. Enjoy what was. Besides its not like the game was pissed away in a manner like Michigan did. That one would stick for a very long time.

Also who is to say this National Championship dream is that far fetched. Most years a Big Ten Champion will make the playoffs, even in the current 4 team variety. So unless you believe Iowa is incapable of winning the West Division, the dream is not that far from reality.

A few are complaining, but be honest, most are lamenting.

It was very frustrating. Even more frustrating they successfully ground and pound it against us. I think our D was just totally gassed considering how long they were on the field. We couldn't sustain drives in the 2nd half.
But as others have said, it's time to move on. Winning the Rose Bowl would be a great ending to a great season.

IMO the D was awesome on that last drive you make a team run 22 plays to score you did your job.The problem was you will probably. Never see a team run 22 plays without a TUrnover or a penalty some where.

I was thinking to myself with about five minutes left, "Crap, they're going to milk the clock down to the very end". Just kept winding it down. About two minutes left I'm thinking "We need to get the ball back"! Usually, I get mad when we lose like that, but I was just speechless. Down for a little bit and then went to bed.

Of course, you're a Nebraska fan. You all think a alike. It's funny you actually think such an attitude by fans is helping the team.

100% agree.

Look at MSU. Lost to a dogs*it Nebraska, still won the East, and had to win ONE game
to clinch a playoff spot.

Iowa will have many more opportunity's to get there IMHO. Maybe not every other year, but more like every 1 in 4 years.

Trying to be pumped for the rose bowl, just can't get there. How the F did our d not get off the field on the last drive? they just happen to pull off the longest drive in college football this year right then?!

Ok, vent over

My buddy and I were standing and he said when MSU got the ball, "get them in a 3rd and long situation we can stop them, anything less we are trouble." I mean they picked up 5 of 6 3rd down conversions (most of them were 5yds or less). The one that I personally thought was a killer was the 3rd and 8 at midfield with about 6min left. I thought if we stopped them there, they would of punted. The QB made a hell of a throw and that WR caught in between 2 of our DB's. That was a big play and it moved them into 4 down territory.

I thought the defense played a hell of a game and was only a foot and half away from stuffing the 4th down play. Also on the TD run, they had him stuffed. MSU made some plays and I have to tip my hat to them. That's what big players do in big games. It was a great game and I think Iowa learned a lot and will that to get better. Our offense needs to be better at controlling the ball and burning some clock. Need to get more creative.

No kidding. Iowa simply has to finish ahead of Wisconsin, UNL, Illinois, NU, UM and Purdue at the end of the regular season, and then it comes down to one game against MSU, Ohio State, Penn State or Michigan for the championship. Hardly an insurmountable task.

I woke up early Sunday morning because I couldn't sleep thinking about that MSU game. That fumble recovery in the end zone was a fluke and flukes happen so it doesn't bother me as much. The three things that still bother me are:
1) The pass interference call on Vandeberg in the 4th quarter that may have led to another quick TD. The defender did what he had to. Smart play, but that would have ended the game if we scored that TD.
2) Why did we wait until so late in the game to throw downfield? I think Kirk thought we could win a slug-fest, but wouldn't some downfield throws have opened things up at the LOS a bit?
3) Everyone in the world could see MSU start to take control of the LOS in the 3rd. At the start of that last drive I told my wife the game was over since I knew MSU was going to march down the field. If we had let them score with 2 minutes left, we would have had a shot. The announcers commented on it as well and hind site being 20/20, this is what we should have done (though I know Kirk wouldn't want to go that route - and I'm not pissed about trying to make a stand, but it sticks in my gut when I think about it).
