A bill filed by a Virginia lawmaker this week would require schools to be certain that children are using the restroom corresponding to their “correct anatomical sex.”

The legislation, which would prohibit transgender students from using the bathroom matching their gender, is being sponsored by Republican Del. Mark Cole.

House Bill 663 defines “anatomical sex” as “the physical condition of being male or female, which is determined by a person’s anatomy.”

“Local school boards shall develop and implement policies that require every school restroom, locker room, or shower room that is designated for use by a specific gender to solely be used by individuals whose anatomical sex matches such gender designation,” the measure states.

Under the bill, any student who violated the bathroom rules could be fined $50 by law enforcement. Schools would have the discretion of allowing students to use a “single stall restroom or shower” or to have “controlled” access to an otherwise unoccupied restroom.

Cole’s legislation would also allow law enforcement to fine anyone who knowingly used a public restroom that did not correspond to their “anatomical sex.”

Civil rights advocate Tim Peacock noted that “adults would be required to inspect children’s genitals before they use the bathroom” for the legislation to be enforceable.

“This is what the conservative movement has devolved into: forcing children to allow adults to examine their genitals out of misplaced fear that transgender kids and adults might commit a hypothetical never-before-seen act of violence or sexual aggression (that would still be against the law with or without transgender protections),” Peacock wrote.

He didn't propose the bill?
He did propose a bill, but not as the blog represents it. The bill did not say every child's genitals would have to be inspected. Civil rights advocate TIm Peacock is the one who made that claim.

Interesting that the party of "freedom" now wants control of what's in your pants.

Can we agree that both parties are full of idiots?
Why is it that whenever the Republicans do something clearly idiotic, Democrats have to get thrown in there with them? This has nothing to do with Dems. Asking people to display their genitals before allowing them to go to the bathroom is beyond ridiculous.

Well for starters, no one is actually doing or proposing that that. Dems have a really bad habit of making up false problems and bitching about them.

I disagree with the bill anyway, but don't feel the need to make up a lie to make it sound worse than it really is.

What part of Republicans wanting kids to prove what genitals they have don't you understand?

You really think they are going to have someone checking naughty bits at the restroom door?
Who knows? Hence why this bill is so stupid. How else are we supposed to take a mandatory requirement that each school be able to prove what genitals kids have?

I'm not saying it's a good bill, but the Civil rights guy comes in at the end of the article and makes a statement, and the summary is "crazy right wingers..." Step back from the craziness for a second and think about what's proposed legislation and what's political spin/agenda.

Clearly the intent is to be sure kids are using the correct bathroom, and that all kids are comfortable in the restroom they're in. Is the bill right? Probably not yet, but don't act like it's some kind of ploy by the right to do more harm to society. Every school will have 2-3 boys who will "identify" as girls for a few days just so they can go to the girls bathroom, and it's easier for each school to handle if some sort of law backs them up and spells it out.

My kids will be attending school in VA, and personally, I'd prefer they just have the trans-gendered kids use a separate single stall restroom. I only have boys, but I'd rather they be using the restroom with other boys who profess to be boys. Medically/physically, a transgendered kid (not a hemaphrodite) is either a boy or a girl regardless of how they "identify." So yea, let them "identify" however they want, but don't tell the traditional boys and girls they have to allow a "girl" or "boy" to watch them do their business because it's the PC thing to do. In fact, schools could be susceptible to harassment suits from "normal" kids parents if they did allow them to just use whatever restroom they wanted.

This is obviously in response to the new trend toward letting children choose what gender they identify as, and use whatever bathroom feels comfortable (to them, and to hell with anyone else's feelings) on any particular day.

I believe such a decision should be an adult one, and not something that should be encouraged in schools.

It is as dumb as it gets. And Republicans have clearly lost it. But to not include the stupidity of Dems implies that one side is smarter than the other and clearly this is not the case.

It just dawned on me. Can't they just issue a urinal card and create automated urinals? If you always go in the stall it calls for adult examination of your junk. (Pity the kid with the tiny PP huh?)

It's a ploy by the right to go after people they don't feel comfortable with. You have to admit, the right doesn't exactly have a good track record when it comes to groups like gay people or the transgendered. This is an extension of that.

But what if I don't want a gay man standing at the urinal next to me scoping out my junk? What am I to do? The government MUST protect me!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Totally agree, but even on those issues the right isn't nearly as far out there as the left would paint them. It's exactly what Obama referred to in his SOTU regarding how political division has gotten worse, not better. Both extremes are guilty of it, and in this one instance, the left is at fault for overreaction. Last week Obama wanted to enforce current gun laws and close loopholes, and the right went "they're gonna take our guns!" Same thing.

Not one Republican is in full support of gay marriage. Many, like Rubio, even say they will pack the court to overturn this right if he gets into office. How has the GOP not earned this criticism that they are anti-gay? This really has nothing to do with the Dems.

Maybe children should be required to bring a doctor's note to school identifying their sex. Things are getting pretty confusing out there in our big wonderful world.

Girls will be boys, and boys will be girls.
It's a mixed up, muddled up, shook up world,
Except for Lola. Lo lo lo lo Lola.

Being against state-supported gay marriage isn't the same thing as being anti-gay.

I know I'm comfortable having the school demand my daughter prove she has a vagina.
