Views on Illinois and Purdue for 2023

Why do you suspect a major regression on offense? They have a really good OC that fits their team. One of the best RB's in the big ten. WR might have a couple surprises of good players being available yet. OL is looking up.
You lose your multi year QB who was 2nd team all conference and TE. Top WR who was 2nd team AA is gone and one starting OL left for UCLA. Don't return any all conference players minus your RB who was honorable mention all Big 10 and team has a new coaching staff coming in. Odds are they won't be as good as last year and bowl game showed how much they missed the guys mentioned who sat out. Transfer from Texas Card isn't as good as O'Connoll at QB either.

Also your claim about DL being just as good if not better. Purdue had 0 players make any all conference team on defense. 2 of 5 who got honorable mention were DL who left in the portal. You sound like some Iowa fans when you think the guy who left the backup will be better than he was. Reason those guys were starters last year over the others.

I've got Purdue at 6-6 next year. Tell me I'm being unreasonable though. We will find out on card. Hard to be better than Oconnell, but he could still be really good.

Oline will be better, even though they lost 1 guy. Some really good young guys. One was freshman all American team I think. WR will be fine, Thompson is back. Wright may be back. They have an actual coach now. TE, Garrett Miller will be back. He's better than Durham. This offense isn't magically going to suck.

Defensively, there is plenty of talent on the D. Very good, athletic DL coming up. I'm partially banking on Walters and Kane making this defense better, but I have good reason to believe they will based on past results.

Purdue isn't void of talent. The bowl game is a terrible barometer for this next year though. Terrible. 6-6, walters is recruiting way better than Brohm atm in terms of getting guys on campus. Idk if he can coach, but as of now, the future looks bright. I was mostly curious how people can say Purdue will be bad next year. Then again, most said it last year. Most importantly, walters has seemed to fix some culture issues.

Getting Brohm in 2017 was the best thing to happen to Purdue football in a long time. Losing Brohm in 2022 was the next best thing to happen to Purdue football in a long time. When a coach has already decided he wants to leave he’s already checked out. Thanks for most of the memories. it won’t show pm his record, ( but both were Brohm Family defeats) but many will remember their rwo huge losses in bowl games to SEC opponents.

Because the Boilers lost a lot of talent and most coaching changes fail. The odds favor regression. Simplest explanation is usually right.

But they also still have plenty of talent and a better coaching staff. You have no idea what they will look like and little idea what the roster looks like.
Sure. But I don't think the Boilers are better at the positions that gave them a great year for Purdue last season.

You do not know you have better coaching. The last guy won more at Purdue than you'd seen in a decade. Historically Purdue is an up and down program. A few years of up and a decade or so of down. You're due for a downturn. Those trends are compounded by a certain chaos that inheres in coaching changes. Plus, the statistical probability that the coaching change won't work because they do not generally work almost anywhere at any time. Like the coaches between Tiller and Brohm weren't hired knowing they'd suck.

Sometimes things go off trend but usually they don't. Just the nature of historical trends and the imperatives they create.

Still surprised Brohm ran off for the ACC unless Purdue was about to run him out of there. I realize he was QB at Louisville, but c'mon. They are gonna fester in a stagnant conference until that one is blown up with departures to the Big Ten and SEC and that might not be for 8 or 10 years.

Idk if we have a better head coach, we have a better staff. Brohms first staff, really good. This last staff, not great. Minus Hagen. He was really good. OC is the one I can say is probably worse, but they still got a dang good OC.

The thing that is different now than in the past is the investment in the program and university support. Hard to compare the bobinski era to the Burke era. Way way different. Every sport is on the rise under bobinski.

Hes had one foot out of Purdue for 2 years. His brother, Greg, never bought a house and his family supposedly lived in Louisville. Oscar was telling Brohm to come home as much as Brohm considered it. It's a lesser job, but home....

Some locker room issues were arising though. Had brohm stayed, lots of transfers. I think the ceiling is higher this next year with Walters than it would have been under Brohm.

I'd put Brohm higher. What he's done is nothing short of incredible. Took a team with 9 wins in 4 years to back to back 8 wins seasons for the first time since 99-2000 I believe.
Weren’t you singing Brohm’s praises not too long ago?

Yes. Why shouldn't I sing his praises. He rebuilt the program. You can sing his praises and say it was time to move on.
So Brohm while here was awesome. Leaves now it's now it's good riddance new coach and staff are better. I'm sure if he stayed you'd be singing a different tune about him after last season getting to the Big 10 title game.

The culture was going the wrong way these last couple of years and there were knocks on the staff. But he also rebuilt Purdue and you have to love him for that. Both can be true. You are claiming otherwise, but him being awesome and me being ok with him moving on can be true.

If Brohm stayed, I don't think Purdue makes a bowl next year. I'm singing a louder tune because Brohm left. Ceiling is higher this year under Walters. Do they hit it? Idk. Most position coaches have seemingly been upgraded. Better and bigger recruiting department hired under walters. Love Brohm and all he did, last year was fun, but not sad he left.

There are two top 100 WR recruits in Fort Wayne. Brohm couldn't get them on campus. Walters has had them twice and rumor is they love Purdue. Walters has flipped a top 250 Texas QB from TCU. He's brought a 5 star CB to campus. Multiple top 200 Defensive players. He's got way more recruiting traction than Brohm. Defense will be better under Walters. Offense probably takes a step back, but it isn't huge. If walters can coach, they upgraded everywhere else it seems. I say all that while acknowledging Brohm did great for Purdue. Not sure how both cannot be true. Sometimes it is time for coaches and schools to move on. Purdue was not shocked by Brohm leaving. He's been leaving for 2 years.

The Brohm Family is the first family of sports in Louisville. His father Iscar was a longtime coach at the high school level. Jeff and his brother Brian were both star QB’s for the Cardinals on successful teams. Both played in the NFL. The fans are convinced he was restore their football program to the level they believe it once attained. Time will tell. I am very pleased with the hiring of Coach Walters. Time will tell.

Did Iscar gave brothers named Ragnar and Cnut?

I do apologize I didn’t read everything I get a little tired of the hypothetical banter about how everything is perfect even though our coach left. Every Fanbase is convinced the next hire is spectacular even if they have 10 bad hires in a row…

But as the deplorable dog suggested a higher percentage of hires go poorly as opposed to well!

I was semi-surprised that he didn’t leave for Louisville the first time… I am not at all in agreement that Purdue football coach is a better job than the Louisville football coach. Maybe not better but certainly not worse and quite frankly I believe it will be easier for him to win consistently there!

I will also readily admit, I very much wanted him to go. He was Iowa’s kryptonite! But they were not Uber talented! They were Mediocre and beating Iowa withstanding they were ridiculously inconsistent!

I Have no clue how the hirer will go but again, it is always a crap shot!

Who said walters is perfect? But no, big ten money trumps Louisville and their lesser conference.

I’m guessing coaches are going where they can win and not overly concerned about TV money. Those ACC coaches are still rakeing it in. He left because he thought he’d win more, period!

He left to go home. Had nothing to do with winning more. Home. Brohm was always going home.

Man you sure are bringing a lot of keystrokes here to blab about the Pee U team that travels by train. Always tough to replace a really good QB. I dont know if Card can run also but that is something you didnt have the last few years.

Question, so he really isn’t all that concerned if he wins more, it was just to go home?!?! He actually thinks it could be harder to win at Louisville but after spurning them to begin with, he decided to go home even though it isn’t as good a job?

That’s really interesting!

I predict he actually WILL win more, because it will be easier!

So the guy was so homesick, at like age 50, he couldn't emotionally handle working only 163 miles from Louisville?

There's a lesson in there for the Never Ferentz bitter enders. Not only no guarantee of more success but no guarantee the new guy stays if he has 3 or 4 good years. Then we're in the crap shoot again, hoping that we beat the odds and the coaches improve.

He is mobile enough. The HC and OC has said they want a QB that passes, but can pick up a first down when needed. No where have I said Card is AOC.

Well ya, easier schedule. Not a better job. That had nothing to do with Louisville or Purdue and everything to do with home. For him and his entire family. Besides Brian. Brian was considering other options. Greg never bought a house, family still lived in Louisville. Oscar begged Jeff back. He wasn't happy Jeff turned it down the first time. He's been going to Louisville for 2 years, just had to happen. Worst secret known to man.

This isn't hard, you just want it to be more. Brohm went to Louisville because it's home.

If Brohm didn't have his connections to Louisville, he'd still be at Purdue. Money, talent, and facility wise, Purdue can compete with anyone in the big ten not named osu, psu, msu, um.

Ok…I guess it Brohms loss then, dumb now it seems. PU is the new West favorite. It’s funny though that your facilities rank with everyone except those 4 powerhouses, because…well it’s been said ours is one of the better ones too, so…..

The more I think about it, it’s crazy Brohm left this great PU job to go to Louisville and a poorer program ! Just to go home….wow!!

****ing hell you guys. Yes, he went home b/c Brohms ARE Louisville. He cried when he didn't accept the job when it opened a few years ago but he stayed at Purdue b/c he couldn't leave the program so early. Get over yourselves on this.

Then he was dumb and got lucky it reopened so soon. If he was that serious about it I now significantly question his intelligence!

What a dumb move to decline the first time when he cried! Dumb, dumb, dumb, because if that’s your dream job, what an idiot. Plus like the PU job is better than The Ville, dumb, dumb, dumb… Thanks for the enlightening me.

You are missing the point entirely to create your own narrative. Because you truly have no idea how big the pull to home was.

Yup. He made promises to players and Purdue officials right away that he intended to keep. He didn't expect Louisville to open as quick as it did, otherwise he'd have not come. But once he said no, Louisville was basically looking for reasons to fire Satterfield after a couple years to bring him home.

Brohm going to Louisville this year has been know for 2 years.

Louisville has been looking for reasons to get sat out. All Brohm had to do is say I'm coming home. Been known for 2 years. Before this past season, every Purdue fan knew he was going after the year. Most just denied accepting it. This isn't hard. Not sure why you insist it different...

OK makes sense. I feel bad that he lead you on for two years….

Good luck! It sounds like you’re in a great place!
