Wallmart will close 269 stores.....

They're just the scaled down WalMart Express stores that turned out to be an experiment that didn't work out. They're also opening more new stores than that within the next year.

Yet Walmart says it will continue with its plans to open 300 new stores around the world later this year and 2017, including up to 60 new U.S. Supercenters and 10 new Sam's Club stores.

Net gain. Bad stores being replaced with better stores.

I saw that, and then read it and realized they're opening even more, and bigger on average, closing 4 supercenters and opening 50-60 supercenters for example. Conveniently, they've left out the number of new jobs the new stores will provide, and mentioned the 16,000 impacted by the closings, here's an excerpt:

The world’s largest retailer also said it will open 50 to 60 Supercenters and 85 to 95 of its smaller Neighborhood Market locations in the U.S. during the fiscal year that starts Feb. 1.

That’s in addition to between 200 and 240 international stores, and seven to 10 new Sam’s Club locations.

More than 95 percent of the closed U.S. stores are within 10 miles of another Wal-Mart store. When possible, it will transfer store associates to nearby locations.

That is still a lot of real estate to be getting rid of. Looks like Brazil is taking a hit on the stores there. Who would have guessed it

Retailers rise and fall see SS Kresge...Wal Mart will go away someday....Dollar General and others are circling

I read about this. . . Has anyone honestly seen a Walmart that wasn't a Super Center in the last 5 years?

I honestly thought they just made all Wal-Marts into super centers.

They just built one of the little "Neighborhood Market" grocery stores in our town.

My hometown (pop. 7500) still doesn't have a "SuperCenter" although we've got a poor man's version of one. We had a "retail only" WalMart until about 3 years ago.

Edit -- Sounds like Trad called the poor man's version of a SuperCenter a "Neighborhood Market". That's what my old hometown has.

Apparently, that's what WalMart calls a medium sized type of their stores that centers on groceries too.

Isn't that a sad commentary on the state of mankind in general?
Well they do employ 2.2 mill or so, most with little to no advanced education. I despise walking into the place but the fact is they employ some folks in some very poor areas who otherwise probably wouldn't be working. So there's that.

I rarely step foot in their stores. Two months ago I ran into a dirty, run down store in Ozark, AR, to get a few things and that's enough for awhile. I went to my bright, clean, stuffed with organics Costco today and I couldn't be happier.

Target is giving Walmart some real competition in the
metro areas. They have more quality products and
a better environment in their stores. Walmart continues
to downgrade their employees and this is starting to backfire.

Walmart just increased their minimum wage to $10 per hour and implemented an aggressive training and internal promotion program. How is that "downgrading" their employees?

So you buy at WalMart because they hire otherwise unemployable folks? Define "unemployable"? Most folks who desire a job are employable. My bride has over 100 such (unemployable) folks working part time 52 weeks a year. These folks pay taxes and their employers pay taxes to the state of Iowa and the city of DSM....and not paying any taxes to the state of Arkansas.

I've had way worse service at Target than I have at Walmart, but I'm just one guy. I'll tell you this, I'll never set another foot in Target again.

You think they increased their "minimum wage" in China? In Thailand" In Scotland? In France? They were shamed into doing it in the US. And as I have mentioned earlier...and many times, WalMart is far more destructive to local economies than they are beneficial. Why do you think they gifted Bill and Hillary "preferencial stock" in their company?

To buy votes and/or favors.

And honestly Nole, my experience here in DSM is just the opposite. The WalMart's here are a train-wreck. I refuse to enter the doors of any WalMart...but I will enter any Waffle House I encounter w/o hesitation.

You know all this, and still you wish to give these politicians the ability to make sweeping legislation that could affect 350 million citizens?
It is human nature. Nothing more and nothing less. People have sold themselves out for ever. These folks are no better....and really, no worse, than any others we place into this situation. It is NOT a Dem/GOP thingy....it is a reflection on the human condition.

You didn't answer the question of why you wish to give these people the power to accomplish this.
