Was Mangino termination a last ditch effort to stay employed?

I don't think he needs a miracle. I think if he wins two and looks competitive in the losses, he's 50-50 or better to get another year. I'm sure he'll be back if he wins 3, and that wouldn't be a miracle by any stretch of the imagination.

That wouldn't be a miracle?

I think he will still be the coach. They will win at least one of the remaining games.

Personally, I think Kill out at Minnesota is an ISU opportunity. There's only so many good players to go around in the midwest. I thought UW and UN changing coaches is an opportunity for Iowa going forward. Heck, Illinois too, though I think Cubit might get that job full time. Bill Snyder ain't getting any younger either.

What I'd like to know is...are there any ISU related guys out there coaching-wise that are replacement opportunities? I honestly don't know. Otherwise, you're probably looking at scooping up an assistant or lower level guy (MAC, FCS) - and knowing how the B12 winds are blowing program-wise, they're going to want a guy who emphasizes something similar to the Baylors of the B12 world stylistically speaking.

Say Briles' kid assistant for example. A Brock Speck type might also make sense.

That's what ISU faces here. Who are you going to convince to come to ISU if you make a change?

The report when Mangino was announced that I heard on radio is Mangino and Rhoads never meshed well but kept it behind the scenes. Maybe a QB squabble involved was the biggest driver in all this.

Maybe canning the oc improves Rhoads' chances of keeping his job to the end of the season. Fewer candidates to be interim hc.

Serious question. Would Tom Herman have any interest in coming back to ISU? He's head coach of University of Houston now. I assume he'd prefer Big12 over American Athletic Conference. Plus he's been a coach in Texas and can probably recruit there. Maybe he's interested more in the SEC (USC) or Pac12 (USC), because he did grow up in California.

I've heard no. There was some talk about Frost being interested if it opens since he has some local ties but I think he could hold out for a better job

I think he could get by with 2 especially if the two were home wins, fans are getting tired of going to games to see them lose. 5 wins total or 3 more would be tough and would/should be enough to give ONE last year to get to a bowl game next year. But I could almost see if all 3 wins were on the road fans would be tired of always seeing losses at home. Even though you would think the Texas game at home is probably most likely the best chance at a win.

It's the Big XII with good facilities and a good fan base -- and a history of being patient with coaches. I don't think there is a shortage of relatively young coaches who would think they could be the guy to succeed there.

Don't get me wrong. I fully realize the drawbacks of the job, and the fact it isn't as attractive as a number of others that are going to be open. But aspiring young coaches seldom have the attitude of "I can't do that job, so I don't want to try."

It's almost a total crapshoot, though. Sometimes an assistant making the move to head coach can be successful -- several Fry assistants would be good examples of that. Sometimes not. Same thing with moving up from smaller schools. Again, Fry is a good example of a coach who had been quite successful at a lower level and was able to step up; but then there was Frank Lauterbur, who wasn't.

Donnie Duncan was associate head coach of the nation's #1 football program, and those of us who were around at the time know how that worked out for ISU.

But we may be getting the cart ahead of the horse here. Rhoads is still the coach, the team seems to be getting better and the schedule is getting easier.

Lol...love to see Frost take the job (if it opened) as that would be a severe kick in the junk for Nebby as well. They were all hot and assured he'd want the job at Nebraska....

Rhoads firing Mangino is like the fat man being thrown off a sinking ship in order to keep the ship afloat longer. I actually think keep Mangino as head coach and fire Rhoads. At least Mangino did a good job at Kansas. Rhoads main selling points were his dad was a coach, he was on some good coaches coaching staff, and he's from Ames.

Don't forget he drives a Harley!!

I agree with those that think Leath is going to be the MAJOR voice in what happens to CPR. Pollard has proven to be lacking in his head coaching hires. The improvements on campus only get you so far, the teams needs the "W" a little more often.

I think that Mangino was willing to be the scapegoat here to get a jump on a HC job elsewhere.

You think getting fired -- for a second time in three jobs -- makes you more attractive to prospective employers?

Can him or not ISU will remain ISU.....the only way they get a decent coach is if they hire somebody young. If that coach has any success he is bolting for a better program (almost every D1 programs in the nation and probably a handful of subdivision schools).....I mean does it really matter?

My buddy in Ames says the word on the street is that Paul is done at season's end. That said, this board has given reason to keep him another year. Dumping your OC in mid season does not seem to be the act of a man who thinks he's walking the plank.
Is your friend's name Mr. Obvious? :)

If...If, North Texas reached out to Mangino first... anything would be possible. I don't understand Texas football, and I doubt you do either. There are some wealthy alumni who might be willing to do whatever they thought necessary to restore winning football to say... NTS. MM has a checkered past. Hell... look at Bobby Pettrino(sp). Getting fired from a job means absolutely nothing it you can win football games in the eyes of some.

You sure like to argue with people... a lot! Feel free to dispute my opinion if you'd like.

Why? He got ranked immediately at Houston, simply by playing worse competition. If he considers playoffs his goal, ISU is out, if he considers being ranked and high bowls, Houston is more appealing.

Hire someone and if they are successful they will leave but leave the program in a better spot and get some wins along the way. I'm on board with that because it will give ISU better options on the next coach. ISU isn't going to get a successful long term coach on their next hire

What do Cyclone fans think they need to improve? Is it almost entirely recruiting? Recruiting enough for depth? Does the "program" need the foundation put in place, like what Strong is having to redo at Texas after Mack let it go? Does Rhoads already leave a good foundation?

Is Ed Orgeron the guy to go after to try and raise the talent level? Do they need an "innovator" like a Chip Kelly to take advantage of schemes that allow a pick of available players?

Second half? From the 5 minute mark of the 2nd quarter, they outscored them 27-10. Do you think Baylor took pitty on them in the second quarter? For the rest of the game? I'm not into 'moral' victories, but the way ISU fought back was pretty respectable. ISU dug their grave with TO's in the 1st quarter.

Baylor lost their starting QB in the 1st half after this game was well out of reach. The back up was not so good. Also Baylor plays ZERO defense just like the rest of the Big 12. Even a team like Iowa State can put up some points against them.

Would it make sense for ISU to go after a guy like a Sarkisian, someone big named but who maybe has fallen from the high area due to things going on in his life personally? I guess it would be a risk but could they sell it to someone like that as hey we have no high expectations, we just want you to come in and help us start to build up. We are away from the bright lights of the west coast and you can just be in a Midwest town without the glitz and glamour. Could a guy like that (assuming they could get him there) be big name enough to bring in guys to Ames and start to build them into something? Just something that was brought up by couple of buddies that got me thinking.

As others have said, Mangino isn't getting another P5 head coaching job. Period. Aside from whether or not he is a good coach (he likely is pretty good). He went 50-48 at Kansas over 8 years, which given the program's history prior (Terry Allen) and since (Weis, Turner Gill and Beatty) is like Vince Lombardi.

He put together the magical 12-1 season on the back of a very good college QB (Reising) and the low point of the B12 North. But in today's environment, he's not getting hired again after "abusing" players (whether or not you agree it's abuse, you can't do what he did today and get away with it).

Again... Bobby Petrino.

Bobby Petrino was fired for very unrelated matters - hiring/banging a female that wasn't his wife, then crashing his motorcycle and lying (?) about it.

Mangino was abusive towards players, and obviously wasn't getting along well at ISU.

Which I agree, however, this might lead to a revolving door of coaches which in turn would not be advantageous. They can improve obviously, but I do not think ISU will ever be anything but #2 school in Iowa. I understand that MSU faced this challenge for years and now have surpassed big brother Michigan. However, that is a much different situation due to the abundance of talent in the state of Michigan and the lack of talent in Iowa (although per capa Iowa is pretty good at producing athletes) but with such a low population in the state of Iowa ISU will continue to struggle to ever be relevant outside of Ames.......

I don't care what number we are in Iowa, I want to win 6 games a season and go to a bowl game and hopefully improve from there where we could get an occasional 8-9 win season.

How sad is this. What other power 5 conference school can you get an 8th season after half way through your 7th season being 31-51 and 15-41 in conference play and on track to miss a bowl game for a 3rd year. Plus have only 1 winning season and bowl victory in your first year.

Luckily for PR he has his ridiculous contract and buyout and lot of other schools already needing a new coach that ISU may actually hold off for one more year before looking for a new one.

Baylor's quarterback was hurt with about 5 minutes remaining in the game, and Baylor leading by 2 scores. The backup is exceptional -- observers are saying he may end up better than RG3.

Serious question: Do you actually have a source that tells you this stuff, or do you just kinda wing it?

I think most fans would be fine with that....although ISU fans are like any other fans. If we got that, we'd pretty quickly start bitching about it. I'm old enough to remember the people who were glad Woody Hayes slugged that Clemson player because it let us get rid of "Old eight-and-three Earle" and move to the next level.

I think it always comes down to athletes. This staff either missed on evaluations for several years or failed to develop the talent. I think it was correct, albeit a year or two late, to go after JC kids at selected positions the last two years. But you have to have coaches who can get the most out of their players. Snyder is an excellent example of this. If I had to name what aspect of the program hurt ISU the most under Rhoads, I would say the offensive line. It's pretty decent this year, but in past years it hasn't been.

As for the foundation, whether it's Rhoads or somebody else next season, it looks like he will have a pretty good cast of characters. A lot of the key people this year are juniors. The big question is whether there are others behind them after next year.

Yep all teams lose 4 starting OL and never miss a beat. Especially at isu where they just keep turning out NFL draft picks.

Reading between the lines (not Randy Peterson's sunshine and daisies), these last 5 games are an 'audition' for CPR. He might need to get two wins to save his job, which means he'll need to beat 2/3 of KSU, WVU, and OkState.

It's sad that in year 7 they have to evaluate whether the guy is the right person for the job.
