A little side-fact ... did you know that Irish citizens tend to be very sympathetic to Palestinians because the treatment of Palestinians at the hands of the Israeli's was very much similar to that of the Irish at the hands of the British. What's more, Britain also played a significant role in the displacement of Palestinians in order to accommodate the formation of Israel.
Also, did you know that many ultra orthodox branches of Judaism opposed the formation of Israel. Interestingly, the formation of the Israeli state was actually the result of a secular movement. Of course, try getting some of Israel's neighbors to believe and/or understand that.
Why, to do this day, does Turkey still refuse to recognize the genocide/ethnic cleansing that occurred at their hands to the (once sizable) Armenian population toward the end of WWI?
I know history and I'm not ignorant of international things. Blind nationalism is dangerous. Nationalism, in itself, is fine ... but historically (and internationally), nationalist movements are usually coupled with racist/discriminatory forces.
To me, the best brand of patriotism is one where a nation is not blind to its own warts and it strives to be better and to do better.
