WBB 2019-20 Season in general

According to Charlie Creme, Iowa was a 2 seed heading into Sunday, but the loss at Michigan knocked them back to a 3 seed. Three other Big Ten teams are projected to be 4 seeds. Tough road ahead with away games at Purdue, Maryland and Rutgers. Maintaining a 3 seed will be difficult. On the other hand, the opportunity is there for Iowa to get back to a 2 seed like last year. That will really be a remarkable thing.

They need to stay healthy and they need to stop waiting until the 4th qtr to shoot well and play with more energy than their opponent.

They finally got burned by a fairly decent opponent on the road.

Iowa in the Greenville (#1 S Carolina) region with #3 Iowa hosting #14 Dayton/Atlantic 10 in round one and with #6 LSU vs #11 St John’s in the other bracket. The winner of the regional quarterfinal would advance to the semifinal in Greenville likely against #2 Oregon State.

Of course this is all purely speculative at this mid-conference season juncture.

Go Hawks!

As noted, The Hawks still have a difficult road schedule with Purdue, Maryland, and Rutgers yet to play. The four remaining home games are comparatively easy with perhaps the most difficult one being the rematch with Nebraska this Thursday. This game will be important not only because Iowa is coming off a loss, but also because Nebraska is the only other school that the Hawks have lost to in the B1G (in the very first game). It will be the first of four rematches for the season (also @Maryland, vs Wisconsin and vs Penn State in that order). I believe that the way they respond/perform against the Cornhuskers should provide us with a good sense/indication of how they will finish the season because they have to follow them with road games @Purdue and @Maryland.

Both Purdue and Maryland are strong and athletic in the interior, we will need to shoot really well. We replaced the scoring from last year but not the rebounding

Ollinger has been rebounding well, but is undersized vs. many other teams bigs. 6'1" is just too short too often in today's game

Ollinger is pretty good at offensive rebounds but Iowa just doesn't have a post that sucks up all the defensive rebounds to prevent second chance points for opposing teams, like Gustafson did last year.

Amanda has been terrific. Monica took a huge jump but rebounding like Megan isn't realistic.McKenna is going to be really good but is just a freshman. Lisa commented after the Michigan game that rebounding is not where it's needs to be

I'd like to see more than 1 player pursue offensive rebounds. Many times Amanda is the only player on Iowa even attempting to offensive rebound.
More people going to the offensive glass will result in more O boards for Iowa especially when shooting 3's.

Monika will never rebound like Megan did, but right now she's averaging less rebounds per game than Doyle (5.0 per for Doyle, 4.6 per for Monika). That's a huge issue given that Monika is in a better position than Doyle to get rebounds on most shots. Iowa as a team could certainly improve its rebounding, but the biggest issue is that Monika is rebounding well below average for her position.

Monika has shown in the last year that she can make huge strides offensively. Hopefully she can apply the same drive to improving her rebounding this off season.

Monika had 17 rebounds vs Nebraska last time? If Iowa can win the rebound battle then it should be a good night for the Hawkeyes. Still not sure how Monika got 17 in that game based on her normal BT output.

Indiana lost at Maryland by 14, but they trailed Maryland by 30 after 3 quarters of play. Indiana does not match up well at all against Maryland. But anything can happen that is why they they play the game.

Good call. Maryland was too much for IU last night.

I'm not sure we should expect Maryland or Northwestern to lose again. Thus far, they've only lost to Iowa and each other. Maryland's toughest games are home vs. Rutgers, home vs. Iowa and at Minnesota. Northwestern's are home vs. Rutgers, at Michigan and at Ohio State.

Each could drop one or more of those to be sure, but they're probably favorites in each of them.

Good news...shot 59% and only had 10 turnovers. Only 11-19 from the line and like the men, not getting a lot from the bench. No Fg's with only 5 points. Need a monster game to take down Maryland Thursday.

Here's my recap of the Purdue win. Overall, a really good game. The defense was great outside of an 8 or so minute stretch in the mid third and early 4th. The offense was good throughout, and Monika torched what I figured would be a good Purdue low post defense.

The biggest game of the season is Thursday. Hawks will need to be much better than they were last time when they played Maryland to win this one.

I would love to see that, but I just don't see anyone beating Maryland now that they are rolling. I will hope for the best though. At this point, I would gladly take a loss there followed by four wins for an impressive second consecutive second-place finish. That would mean back-to-back years of hosting in the NCAA tournament as well.

Agreed. While I would like to win them all, that's why winning at Purdue was big. The rest of the schedule after MD is winnable, but there are none you can just show up for. But, what the heck, let's go beat Maryland, Hawks.

Maryland is tough at home, but the Iowa Women have enough grit to get the job done. Play smart don't make mistakes, play aggressive defense, and most of all block out and get those rebounds!

Doyle Tabs 5th B1G Weekly Honor

Doyle broke the Hawkeyes' single-game assist record against Nebraska (Feb. 6), assisting 15 of Iowa's 28 made baskets in the 76-60 win over the Cornhuskers and marking her the first Big Ten women's basketball player to record 15 assists in a single game against a Big Ten opponent since Tori Jankoska (Michigan State) did against Minnesota (Feb. 21, 2016). Her 15 points and 15 assists marked her third double-double of the season and seventh of her career.

Iowa in the Portland (#1 Oregan/Pac12) region with #4 Iowa/Big Ten hosting #13 Stony Brook/Am East in round one and with #5 MoSt/MVC vs #12 Duke in the other bracket. The winner of the regional quarterfinal would advance to the semifinal in Portland likely against #1 Oregon.

Of course this is all still purely speculative at this point of the season with three weeks left yet.

Go Hawks!

The Ann Meyers Drysdale Award is for shooting guards. Is Doyle also on some point guard award list? I know with the Oregon player it will be hard to top her, but shouldn't Doyle be on the list for point guards?

Maryland predictions anyone? I think Meyer is the key. She hasn't shot well in all our losses this year. (Not a slam. That's an indication of how important she is to the team.) I think if she has a good game (20 pts) we win.

None from me. They usually just come back and bite me in the butt.

I didn't know that Iowa is leading the Big Ten in field goal percentage and 3-point goal percentage. I can understand the high field goal percentage due to Monica Czinano, but 3-point field goals too? Hope Meyer, Sevillian, Doyle and Warnock shoot the lights out this Thursday!:)

I'm going to guess we lose by 15. Maryland is playing a lot better than they were a month ago, and they're a terrible matchup for us with their size and athleticism. I'm afraid we'll see turnovers and offensive rebounds in bunches again.

Another bad shooting night for Maryland or hot shooting night for Iowa's guards could keep things close, but I'd still be pretty surprised if Iowa won. Then again, we've beaten them three in a row, and I was a little surprised by all of those wins, too.

Iowa has not beaten Maryland in their home yet. It’s about time they did. Never give up hope and keep the faith. Think positive.

This is a very reasonable prediction. Beating Maryland 4 times in a row is not in the cards. The real key is can Iowa win out at home (keep the streak alive), and then win at Rutgers? Will be hard, but seems reasonably possible.
