We need a “Severance” thread.

Defiant Jazz was a great scene and Mr. Milchik is the best character in the show.
The scene in S2 EP3 where "the board" rep ends the call, after he receives his paintings "gift" and is silently evaluating it. Her expression in responce to how Milchik is looking at her. Maybe it's just cause I worked in a corp environment for so long idk. But that expression exchange is gold. Soo awkwardly funny.

Spoiler ahead from S2E5:

I like how they brought that back last episode. They added depth to that exchange and made Milchick just a bit more human. Like, he wanted to reach out and discuss the racial implications of the gift with another black employee, but she just kind of looked at him so ... sterile and corporately. He wanted a connection that he couldn't get from anyone else in the company, and he got nothing in return.

Anyone else notice Burt's expession looking out the door as Irving was leaving, walking down the stairs? Kudos to Christopher Walken's acting and presence. Such a slight expression change, subtle and kinda wtf hmmm....

so what DO they actually do in microdata refinement? Selective human extermination of "undesirables" is one theory (all be it a bit obvious)

Burt is either a founder or he was never severed. Also, the choice to often show a darkness shrouding Burt was intentional. He's definitely hiding something.

Fields knows he was never severed and that's why he's so concerned about their relationship and why he looked up the date of Irving's employment. Also, why did they have so many documents with employee information?

They are probably doing nothing except busywork. They're being monitored to make sure the severance is not affecting their cognitive ability.

Figurative lab rats.
Funny you should use that phrase. That's exactly what my wife and I said after a couple of episodes. They look like rats in a maze when they're in the halls. If you really want to stretch... Adam Scott's (Mark S) face looks very ratlike. The "rewards" and "parties" they get for production, etc are not unlike little pieces of cheese one would place in a maze for the rats/mice to seek out. Very generic and minimalist.

Lumon being a pharma/bio-tech company it's all about controlling or rather redefining humanity. Still...a bigger reveal has to be coming.

This was my theory throughout season 1 as well though now it seems to be taking on greater importance.
I'm trying to figure out the significance of all the old cars they all drive... they show them in too much detail and too often to just be nothing.

It does harken back to the time of Kier.

Prediction: Dylan G.'s wife figures out a way to get the OTC full time for him so she can live forever with his innie instead of his loser outie.

It would only be a matter of time before his innie became like his outie. She would never see him bc she works nights, and he would become burnt out from their home life.

I honestly don't think outie Dylan is that bad. A little directionless, a little unmotivated. But he takes care of the kids, he asks her how her days are, when he was fired he was out looking for a job. He just forgot to make cookies and wants a new car. He doesn't abuse her or anything. They're just stretched thin by their family based lifestyle.

So, as I've been watching this show with my 9th grade son and walking him through many of the topics covered with him, I came to my own realization about it that it is a giant metaphor for US slavery.

Their own people (their outie) sell them into it.
They are given monotonous, mind numbing work.
Regular punishments for being "uppity".
Horrible rewards made to seem like these great things.
They are kept separate from other departments, as the slaves were, so little communication can happen to spur on escapes and revolts.

And some other stuff that will come to me. But I had a great litany of things at one point that really did convince me that this is what it's about.

Just got caught up. new episode was outstanding. Nobody mentioned Robby Benson as the Doctor?!

I couldn't watch it after the first episode. I'm sure it gets better, but wasn't drawn to watch it further

New episode "Chikhai Bardo" was beautiful, distressing, and heartbreaking all at once. Dichen Lachman was incredible. If this episode doesn't win an emmy I'll be shocked.
I lost count how many times I said "holy shit" out loud during this episode
Ok. After new episode…I have a theory.

The names of all the rooms Gemma went into were names of towns. Allentown, Carins, Dramesville, etc. Well we know Allentown went to shit after steel left town. And we know the town Cobel is from did the same after this last episode. I’m guessing the town Cobel is from is called “Cold Harbor” or one of those other room names.

It feels like there’s way more needing to happen than the time left. I’m sensing a cliffhanger season ending. I hope we get a little closure on a bunch of stuff. Like the goats.
